  • Hi everyone!
This is a highly requested video where you all asked me how I transitioned from consulting to tech.
After graduating undergrad, I started off my career in one of the big 4 consulting firms and now I am a software engineer at a big tech company (one of the FAANG companies). While I was in consulting I realized I wanted to move into tech as a software engineer, then I made plans and executed them to have a successful move into a new role / new industry in tech. In this video I explain the efforts I made while I was at deloitte to move internally to a software engineer role (i.e. network) and then all the other efforts I made outside of my role in consulting (i.e. leetcode, taking tutorials online, mock interviews etc.).
As I mention in my video, my story will be different than yours, but if you have any questions please let me know in the comments below!

🌊 Hi everyone! I'm Mika Kim and I'm currently a senior software engineer at a FAANG company! In my prior life I used to be a consultant at Deloitte. I created this youtube channel t share my experiences from the tech industry, and consulting. I used to and still use youtube a LOT to gain info on fields of interests and I hope these videos do the same for you too! 😊

Wow this is super helpful! I am in Deloitte on quite a technical team but since I am a new analyst they kinda just put me ad hoc doing functional stuff. I noticed almost all the software engineers in my team are located in India and never thought that if I can prove my skills to them I can make a role switch inside my team? This video totally inspired me to start brushing up on coding skills and do a personal project to showcase the leadership.

My experience has been a little different I work for a big4 too as a senior data engineer. I have worked on ml and cloud engineering projects.
I have always worked on technical projects (coding only) mostly python and pyspark.
But I have my friends in the same ship as you.

Hey mika, I love ur channel and the valuable insight you've provided. Your story of preserving with your GPA and going into consulting and than breaking into tech is amazing. I have a longer question I want to ask, if you have the capacity. I tried dming the Instagram, would it be possible to email you or send it through any other channel of communication.

Hi Mika, this video hit the nail on the head with my situation and I suspect others will have as well as a new grad consultant. I'm currently consulting and doing a lot of non-technical work. I wonder, do you think if you haven't done the internal transition and those technical projects at Deloitte, is it still doable to transition to SWE?

Hi @selabud . I am also on the same situation as yours. Want to switch from consulting role to SWE, but confused weather its possible to do the transition outside the firm. If you know of any such story, please mention it over here.

I'd say you had such an unique experience of finding a firm initiative that is about mobile app development.. Can I ask how did you find the right people to net work with and find this FI?

I honestly kept asking around to anyone that I knew haha I asked my peers, my coach, went to networking events. I also cold-reached out to some partners that I knew had engineering projects that they were running and asked if they needed anyone to help with their work. It's hard to do but you have to keep shooting your shots until you land an opportunity!

You did 'software consulting'.....not like you transitioned into management consulting and then back into software.
Not hating. It looks like normal transitions to me.

I am sorry but I feel that the younger generation of consultants are not really that competent. However because they have been employed and tagged with the corporate title they think they are doing a good enough job and thus their inflated egos.
