Vin and Sori React and Breakdown Metallica Orion!! - Hudba
Leper Messiah always gets passed over. Such an underrated song.
BOW TO LEPER MESSIAAAAAAH!
epic song!
ШΛЯPΛТH YES!! One of my favorite Metallica songs. Definitely underrated.
Definitely underrated! BADASS song!
Groove metal for sure.
These were 23 year old kids who made this!!!
Crazy!
Tears😢😍😍
Which goes to make you think how old they were when they made Kill em all and Ride the lightning
@@tk4171982 they wrote kill em all when they were 19, and ride the lightning when they were 21
most men’s creativity peaks late 30s so if they have a sandbox to be creative and have discipline, they’ll produce some good shit.
Yeah Sori, that’s how you listen to this masterpiece. With eyes closed.
that is when real music is not for listening, but for feeling.... you can just close your eyes and feel the music and the emotion and soul that was put into it
Greatest instrumental ever created! Impossible to recreate the feeling of this song, a total fucking undying masterpiece! For me personally, one of the greatest metal songs of all time..
SHPOKEMOUN wow you get it
Amen brother
Hit the nail right on the motherfucking HEAD! This song is one of a kind and every time I listen to it, it takes me to another dimension or some crazy shit in my mind. And I've been a fan since I was about twelve. In my mid thirties now and it never gets old. NEVER
Call of kutulu its better
Rush-La villa strangiato. All other songs, though great as Orion, they can not compete with that piece of art of Rush
Yeah Cliff was classically trained, and Orion is seen as his swan song so it's very sacred territory for Metallica fans. Structurally, this is a sonata allegro (in short, a musical piece where a main motif or theme is introduced, developed and then returned to in a final form in three stages), so it's basically a piece of classical music, done by heavy metal instruments. On their next album, they used whatever riffs and melodies Cliff had left behind and made them into another (great) instrumental track (though there's 4 lines of spoken poetry in it) as an homage to his memory, called To Live is to Die. I kinda think Sori would enjoy that one. Mikael Akerfeldt even says that if not for that song, Opeth wouldn't exist, so I hope you can do that sometime too.
Exactly!
DesertHigh it IS very comparable to Classical. And there's nothing wrong with that.
DesertHigh No one said it's "meant to be interpreted as classical music", whatever that means, just that the arrangement of the sections fits the sonata form, and that it's not surprising, and unlikely to be a coincidence when you consider Burton's training and interest in classical music, especially Bach (the next song on the album starts with an extended bass intro based on a Bach piece, even). None of this has anything to do with "intelligence", that's your childish presumption. Also the notion that you can't talk about parallels with another genre of music because the instruments are different is just silly.
DesertHigh under another comment, I mentioned a Classical Conductor compared it to Classical. And if you listen to Classical Music semi-regularly, you will hear it also, if you're honest with yourself.
DesertHigh Free your mind brother, because it is very comparable to Classical. Expand your horizons. ✌💀
I've broken my lurk mode after months of watching your reactions just to comment on this video (because its that important to me and many others I think).
Sori, could you listen to it again, with headphones, on your own, and as usual, close your eyes. But this time, think about the nature of your own life, the up's and down's - let the feel of each current moment of the song help you choose where to go next, and let it narrate what it is you choose. The music IS the story. What parts of your life were an adventure? What parts were a struggle? What parts were sublime and which you felt very grateful for? Which parts are of you moving on from something and growing?
Keep in mind also, this was the pinnacle of their original lineup work, and it was a piece that the immortalized who is regarded as one of the most legendary bass guitarists in metal history, because the majority of what you hear in this song (and in master of puppets) came from him. The writing and playing of this track was a very personal bonding between all the members. Cliff was the one who introduced the suggestion of melodic writing into their work, it is mostly because of him that Metallica hits more feels than for instance, Megadeth, and proves that technical superiority doesn't make music actually superior in the human aspect.
Some trivia: James Hetfield, the vocalist/rhythm guitarist, has the notes to the middle of Orion tattoo'ed on one of his forearms.
Also, thousands of guitarists around the world became musicians specifically because of the emotional impact this song had on them.
I feel this track does not and never will need lyrics. Sometimes they just don't. The scales, harmonies, and rhythms of the instruments are the lyrics. You can hear it all day, but you have to actually listen. Consider my suggestion, Sori. :)
Quote of the week!!
Excellent. I could not agree with you more.
Damn, I thought I did long-winded posts...
this comment need to be higher up there so everyone considers your suggestion!
Agreed. Their emotional attachment to this song is palpable. When you watch some of the live performances they do of it now with Trujillo, you can see that the loss of Cliff still hits them hard, and deep. And this song is played as a tribute for him when they do it.
Every musician has that song that made them pick up their instrument of choice. This one is why I play bass. All Hale Cliff Burton
Nick Long I was playing bass a while before this song came out. I had already been listening to some very well trained bass players in Rock and Metal (John Lee Middleton of SAVATAGE for one). But ORION reinforced my passion to different levels.
That bass solo... fuck, as a kid learning guitar (late 1980's..) I thought all the bass parts were guitar and learned them all. Then I found out they were bass when I was in my first cover band. My jaw dropped. Cliff was too good for this world.
Aaron A. Foster absolutely. That was a young man who knew his shit. A superb musician all the way around
Steven Rice exactly. He was a musical genius
Me too!!
Finally! Next react to "To Live Is To Die" by Metallica
Garri agreed, I really can't figure out which one I like more, this or to live is to die. Both very excellent!
Eevil I I mean next from Metallica
Yeah, they should react to every metallica song because there are no other great bands and there are no other great songs in the world. And when they finish every metallica song they should react to their live versions.
To live is to die is the last song that Cliff Burton helped write with Metallica.
José Luis You're taking the piss?
One of Metallica's greatest songs ever, Rest In Peace Cliff Burton... the greatest bass player of all time.
Solid 10 for me. Musically, one of the most astute and progressive arrangements in Metallica's catalog. Should you do a full album listen to Master of Puppets? Yeah. 100% yes. The whole album builds upon itself, and every song increases the overall impact. Vin, though, Damage, Inc. is musically heavier than Disposable Heroes, thought the lyrical content is way heavier in the latter song. Switching gears, maybe one day listen to Iron Maiden's Transylvania, the granddaddy of metal instrumentals.
Disposable heroes make it happen.
Disposable is the best song from master
I'd settle for Blackened
I was almost starting to doubt Vin's metal credentials until he started talking about Disposable Heroes. He knows whats up. \m/
"Battery" motherf*ckers!!!!
+111.563
Why do people always forget about "Damage Inc." when it comes to Metallicas heaviest shit. It's absolutely the most brutal song they've ever written
Shortest straw and dyers eve
Disposable Heroes
The Thing That Should Not Be.
Done.
Love how Jason introduced the song back in Seattle '89 "...above the heaviest number known to mankind, it's a big fat motherfucker called The Thing That Should Not Be".
@@94BadBoyBoogie yes.. people ignore this song when in reality its literally the heaviest song they have ever written
Yes Cliff went to school for music theory. He was the heart and soul of 80s Metallica.
If you want to fully appreciate Cliff you need to react to Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) video.
It's the bass solo that got him into the band. James and Lars though it was just a really heavy guitar at first then realized he was playing bass.
He really revolutionized how the bass was played.
The bass is killer in this song. Cliff could rip it up like a guitar player. Hell, lot's of guitar players can't do what he did. Their instrumentals we soooo good. Too bad it all went away when he died.
Jorge Munoz you can thank Bob Rock for that
@@radbarij For months I thought most of the bass parts from For Whom The Bell Tolls were guitars.
Guys... Please do call of kthulu or to live is to die by metallica... Especially to live is to die.. You will love that song an it has words near the end of the song
Call to kthulu
To Live is to Die. Fuck yes please
Call of ktulu the best instrumental
This is a great song....I do prefer Call of Ktulu, but this is definitely solid.
Me too. And that's not just the Lovecraft fan in me talking lol.
corp Azilum Funny though, how 2 of Metallica's best songs are based in Lovecraftian lore.
Indeed.
Call of Ktulu is my least favorite of the Metallica instrumentals. But it’s still amazing
Austin Gonder Hmmmmm
8:42 Sori caught it on first listen, the magnificence of the climbing guitar run that ends in the hammer-on/pull-off lick that is the crown jewel of this masterpiece, IMO.
Battery, Damage Inc., Disposable Heros and I love the lyrics in Leper Messiah.
Orion: a song that can end a relationship 😂
Dont know you people but when the final solo ends and the riffing outro starts is like i get chills everywhere. It could never ends and i will never be enough.
One of the best Instrumentals ever!!! Did not expect another Metallica this soon..
Also... New tool music confirmed for next year
TOOL let's just be optimistic
They named it Orion because they said that when they wrote the melodic bass part with the little harmonics and delays it sounded to them as though they were floating through space.
That baseline! Damn, Cliff was a genius!
It began with Battery and ended with Damage Inc. So it came in with a bang and left with a bang. Still my favorite album of theirs.
I'm the opposite, a lot of times I'd prefer instrumental over vocals, or even a foreign language song where I can't understand whats being said. There are a tonne of great lyricists and vocalists out there, not saying that there isn't at all, but a song without them is more about how the music in a raw state makes you feel. Edit: Think you have a point Sori, some instrumentals do sound like they should have lyrics but it's stripped away, kinda like back in the day a cd or tape for a single might have an instrumental version included.
Luke Smith Me too. I think it depends on what you go for. I'm much more about the music so I listen to a lot of Prog Rock without singing. I'm all about music writing over lyrics.
@Wills: It also depends on what you had to work with when you were younger. For example for me (Europe 80s) I often could not even access the lyrics as a text (I know, sounds weird in 2018) - you could not even buy the "official" tapes in stores (yes that was the time: the courtesy of Soviet Union blocking anything that was produced in the western countries,) so you were left with dictionary to decode the titles and then, well, good luck decoding the actual lyrics from listening to the tape considering that #1 the quality was not so great (the tapes were likely copied by someone in their garage and the affordable tape players were notoriously terrible) #2 English is a nightmare to decipher "by ear" for someone not used to it: it sounds like a boiling water initially, I am not kidding: it's not even easy to find out where the words start and begin #3 the idioms in English are atrocious to interpret/guess by themselves (and they are everywhere.) #4 metal singers were not exactly known for their crystal-clear way of singing in the first place...
So, the best you could get was some "black market" lyrics someone managed to "xero"-copy and distribute around fans... Fortunately, with time it got better, but still, until then, one had mostly to use imagination to "paint" the meaning of the lyrics in.
Instrumentals are the best to draw and paint to because the lyrics aren't there to distract.
Cliff Burton's MASTERPIECE. ROCK IN POWER, CLIFF!
I as a youth, saw Cliff Burton as an Idle in my world. I sweated for hours, months, years to learn all i could from this man. He lives in me and in all of us through memories and his music, now and till the end of time.
Cliff Burtons masterpiece, he was so incredibly gifted, playing and writing music.
It’s a masterpiece alright, you HAVE to do ‘Call of Ktulu’ now, the way the riff builds up is just incredible
I have seen a lot of people online, who have no interest in metal whatsoever, listen to Metallica (and Orion in particular) and get legitimately moved. It's great to see.
They are obviously the king of kings of metal, and really deserve to be on the Mt. Rushmore of rock in general. Their variety and composition is genius (thank you, James, for your talent, and Lars for being a mad scientist when it comes to stitching the songs together), and they can go from speed to melodic to gallop and get you pumped every time.
First of all, congrats on 30k subs. Totally deserved, and gonna keep on climbing, I feel. Keep up the great work. You are both so easy to watch and your musical awareness is second to none 👍 If I had one request it would be Metallica’s ‘The Thing That Should Not Be’, taken from the mighty Master of Puppets album. Wishing you both all the best ☺️x
Then after that perhaps show Sori the same song from the live Seattle ‘89 show. It’s crazy powerful 🤘
I believe Cliff went to music theory classes and he also listened to a lot of classical music as well.
This is Cliff Burton's "Magnus Opus"... his One Big Goodbye. It includes parts written and recorded with Dave Mustaine. I will admit that I am not the biggest METALLICA fan. But ORION is far and away among my favorite songs. I can no longer imagine a world without this song. Even Classical Conductors have told me this song is worthy of Bach and Mozart. Without a word, the song conveys emotion and mental images evoked from within. Vin, brother. Sometimes we have to grow into an attention span. I know I did at times.
Aaron A. Foster Dave Mustaine and Orion? He has absolutelly no part in this song.
Yeah, the song your thinking of is "Leper Messiah". Mustaine claims that it was based on an early song of his.
Each Metallica instrumental has its own story...feel it
This song, this instrumental is an absolute masterpiece. Just sit back, relax and listen to the guitars and it is like an emotional roller coaster. This song has inspired me to learn the guitar, beautiful instrument in this instrumental shows all of its qualities.
when I listen to orion I see the harshness of space with stars exploding in nuclear force during the heavy parts and during the calm parts the empty void of space with nebulas and galaxies in the background... floating through space the entire song.
You guys should really check out "Phantom of the Opera" by Iron Maiden too. Its off their first album so it actually has their original singer Paul Di'Anno singing, who by all rights was a great singer with a wildly different style than Bruce Dickinson. I honestly prefer Paul to Bruce. The song itself is beyond epic with lots of passion and intricate changes fueled their youth and hunger. By far my favorite maiden song.
6maniac6metal6 yes...I think you, Sori anda Con, should do an early Maiden stuff with vocalist Paul DiAnno. "Twilight Zone", "Remember Tomorrow " or "Wratchild"....
6maniac6metal6 I wouldn't say i prefer DiAnno over Bruce.I would say they both had their strengths.Bruce is more operatic wheras DiAnno was more straightforward punk.
Swat Kats!
One of my all time favourite Metallica songs Rest in Metal Cliff Burton you legend!
Traveling through space and time, and going through a nebula and seeing beauty in the stars and light, then hitting turbulence and pressing on. That's what I think of
I am more of a call of ktulu man, but I looove this track.
Disposable Heroes is fucking heavy but I think Damage Inc. Is way heavier. (If you are using the actual definition of heavy then The Thing That Should Not Be and Dream No More are the heaviest Metallica songs ever... they both just happen to be about Cthulu 👌
Ha Sori smiling at the camera and giving a “thumbs up” mid song is all the review we need. Love watching you guys. Great channel.
Cliff Burton masterpiece. My life is a warmer place because he was able to give us this song before leaving.
Here's your official fan request.... Disposable Heroes!!! :P One of my favorite songs on the album. Also think you need to listen to Call of Ktulu. IMO, their best instrumental.
Cliff is excellent on the bass
7:43 flashes the happiest memories of my life in my mind and as the song plays my happiness continues with it like a lovely lullaby of happy dreams and bright sunny days.
When I first heard this it was on cassette tape, you couldn't skip it and I'm glad I couldn't, that whole album is perfect.
Satyricon - mother north (opera) | amon amarth - twilight of the thunder god | rainbow - stargazer
For me the thing that should not be is heavier than disposable, the riff on that song kicked my ass when i listened to it the first time
Disposable heroes riff is groovy as fuck though
Gotta realize that most of the solos in this piece are not guitar.....it’s bass. Cliff was so gifted.....as short as his time was......we are beyond blessed he shared that gift with us. Truly missed......R.I.P. Cliff \m/
Very intense song! Always keep an open mind to an “instrumental” song! Yes, the words tell a story but the sound of the band makes the music sing!
death voice of the soul beautiful instrumental piece, nice to see the channel growing so well, in regards to opeth, try the lotus eater, rock on! \m/
yeah it would be an excellent choice
OPETH "BLEAK" - you owe it to yourself, Sori. Soooooooooooooooooooooooooori.
_Orion_ is my favorite from the _Master of Puppets_ album, and possibly my favorite song from Metallica, all in all, if I had to pick one. I love instrumentals because they can let your mind roam across the landscape they paint with so much freedom, even to the point that the listener is given freedom to do the painting.
Glad to hear cliff's symphony
You should give the Rodrigo y Gabriela version a try sometime.
This masterpiece is in my top 5 Metallica songs. It’s also Cliff’s magnum opus and was played at his funeral.
Sometimes the bass and guitar is so good they add enough colour to a song without the need for vocals.
Vocals would ruin this song, imo. This song takes you on a journey without the need for vocals.
The instruments create such an amazing atmosphere and unique feel - for me I feel like I’m floating through space seeing just the stars and planets all around me, and being at total peace in that moment.
The Call of Ktulu is also a great instrumental by Metallica that also creates its own atmosphere. Check out the live version with the SF Symphony.
Cliff!!!!!!!!!!! The bass is badass. I love listening to the bass only version of this.
I like the 4 minutes of darkness with the song playing softly in the background. Awesome space metaphor.
Brilliant ;)
Nutshell - Alice In Chains
Awesome MVS Nice choice
Awesome MVS I don't think it will happen unless you make a large "donation".
Chains in Alice - shellNut
Call of Ktulu..also instrumental.
Love u 2 and thank for bringing good content and good thoughts on your channel🤟👍❤️
commenting just as you start to play... this is such a beautiful piece of music... very powerful
Personally I've always loved metal instrumentals. You learn real quick how good or bad a band is as writing music. Most people focus on the lyrics and singing but when you take that out of the equation it forces a band to really concentrate on making a song as interesting as possible. I have always loved Orion & Call of Ktulu and To ive is to Die. All 3 are great peices of music and song structure. Another one at the top of my list is Woodpecker from Mars off the Real thing CD from Faith No More. Probably one of the most influential and underated bands of the late 80's and 90's.
Listen to Billy Gould's bass playing in Wooderpecker from Mars, you'll learn where Fiedly from Korn got a lot of his inspiration for example.
I imagine a space battle, Star Wars vs Star Trek, when I listen to Orion.
And Vin hears a WWI soldier going on and returning from leave. And I hear the aggression and bloodrush of the hunt, skill, bravery and violence; then the return to the tribe with your spoils, the adoration of the tribe, the women who crave the attentions of the strong provider; maybe a challenge for superiority from another in the tribe; and then... back out the next dawn to hunt again.
Like I said though, and you allude to, is that the title has to have some bearing on the song meaning.
I imagine the big bang.. the begining of everything.

Vin, when you said that 18 year old you didn’t want to bother with an instrumental song after hearing the pure thrash of Battery and that was me when I discovered the song last year (I was 17). Someone told me earlier this year that Orion was “a musical masterpiece”. After hearing that I had to check it out and now I’m in love with it. I was glad to see that by the end of the song we had the same reaction
My buddy & I, back in the day use this song for warm up sessions. Brings back alot of good memories!!!
A 4.5 for Orion? :( It's a masterpiece, to race a classic like Orion itself is sacrelegious! Vin - you the man! :D
Dyers Eve - Metallica please 🤘
Everytime that you listen to a song, you expect a history from it. Most of the time the history is told by a lyric. But this song, even without a lyric, tells me a history.
I think it's a trip to space. To another planet.
The beginning of the song is a rocket launching, with all the energy. The start of Cliff's riff is the outgoing of the earth's atmosphere, with energy but not too much. The pause and calm part with Cliff's introduction is the space part. No rockets, not much energy but calm and relax. Then it turns to energy again, and that means the reach and land in the other planet, with the adrenaline to accomplish this mission.
It's a Masterpiece.
Written by the late and great Cliff Burton Rest in Paradise!
Symphony and Metallica - The Call of Ktulu
Metallica - Dyer's Eve needs to happen. And so does Metallica - Hate Train
Makes my heart smile seeing you two just groove with the emotion conveyed by the song. Orion never disappoints
That rhythm makes me feel like I'm in a classical ball dancing around.
If you do Opeth again do Demon of the Fall, it's short and it's heavy, I think Vin will Like it!
Metallica - Bleeding Me
When I listen to this song, I always imagine a journey...a journey of someone traveling from some distant planet to Earth, their home planet through Orion.
Got to admit this was your best breakdown of the lyrics ever .
I think we need another Iron Maiden reaction from you...I do not really feel you gave Hallowed Be Thy Name a great/accurate reaction. Maiden is on the pantheon of great metal bands and I think you will really dig them as you do more reacts from them. They are sort of the beginning/influence for later prog metal and so many of their songs reference historical events or important messages.
Iron Maiden - Wasted Years (the rare positive metal songs)
What’s the title ?
Iron Maiden - Wasted Years
Aces High, Fear Of The Dark, Run To The Hills
I think Powerslave or The Trooper would be great ones to give a try.

...this is a BASS OPUS Vin....i was sadden to know you skip this song....never knew anyone who did that for this song..the intro was bass.@ 4:09 interlude is bass. 6:25 is bass and 9:02 is bass SOLO...Sori I totally agree when the guitar goes into soaring highs and sings/screams it's like a howl in the night....the call of ktulu off of ride the lighting is insttumental...and friend of misery off BLACK album was suppose to be...but glad to hear that this the best instrumental you've heard VIN...heart broken Sori wouldn't listen again and gave a low rating...
Also james hetfield does some solos too Vin.you can tell which are his compared to kirk.he has a little more soul.its slower .and sings usually 1st solos if multiple solos....where as kirk is usually blazing screaming leads
James recorded all guitars for the lead in middle section. All those 3 guitars harmonizing are his. Previous to their website changing, there were bio for the members, and it was said that James always recorded those harmonized solos back in the day.
I think one of the more important elements to enjoying and understanding metal music is to be ready to throw the lyrics out the window in some circumstances. Not that they don't matter, but in most bands the instrumentation is far more important in expressing the emotion of the song. Not to say that the lyrics cannot be profound and highly intellectual, but its more about the atmosphere that a song builds up.
Anyways, you guys should really check out the song "Incarnated" by the band Obscura. I think it represents what I'm talking about perfectly. And I'd really love to hear your thoughts on the lyrics too, they read like a beautiful poem. Keep up the awesome reactions guys!
Whenever I had the power go out during storms and I had no fan for white-noise to help me sleep, I played this song because it is a serene and soothing song to me.
awesome guys! its pretty random but you guys should review Sun Doesn't Rise by Mushroomhead !
Orion is awesome, but "To Live Is To Die" is better more emotional and harder hitting IMO.
to this day, at 36 years old i can not listen to Orion without getting a little misty eyed. Fun story, i saw Metallica on the recent hardwire tour, there was a 7 year old kid that was right up front. James asked the kids name. The parents yelled out Orion. James goes, don't lie to me, the kids name was James Orion, James looks at the parents and got a little choked up and goes that's an honor. It was a fun moment in what was an amazing night.
a total hypnotic roller coaster of instrumental bliss
If you like guitar "whining", please listen to Pantera - Cemetary Gates and wait for it. :)
Opeth!
The Ode to Cliff and what an emotional ride this song was. It showed the true genius of Burton before he passed. RIP CLIFF!!!
I love this song. I get the image of a hunter stalking their prey, deer or the like, and the prey grazing in a meadow, then the hunter creeping up on them, then as the tune builds, its like the chase, culminating in the kill and then a fail to black signifying the end of the hunt.
Cliff Burton was amazing!!
Yay finally more Opeth, hopefully it is something from the Blackwater Park or Deliverance albums. Either of the title tracks will suit Vin's needs for memorable metal riffs.
I don't know if you read comments on older videos, but if not I'll put my suggestions here.

Next instrumental pulling teeth by Metallica
No more instrumentals, please. Songs can be great but there is little you can discuss when there is no lyrics.
Sathriel Satanson it depends what you are listening for, I tend to not pay mind to lyrics until I've taken in all of the instrumental parts.
