I've got a boy 50 like this where I work and no one has been able to work it, because it's German. If I ever get the chance to work on it I might hit u up for pointers.

Why does the barrel refuse to go back or forward after stopping machine for 30 minutes or more?

In the technical manual for the 22s it says it has a screw stroke of 80mm and the different size screws are as follows 18, 22, 24, 28, and 32mm. Just do the formulation for volume of a cylinder to get shot size.

Not only that, people sometimes buy really old machine and retrofit it. I saw Arburg originally controlled with timers retrofitted to modern system for guy, who just wanted to start using injection molding for his business at not so high cost.
