I can’t wait to do a Let’s Play on this game very soon in the near future via Dolphin Emulator! This is definitely one of the best Nintendo GameCube games for many reasons and I can see why! Amazing video and keep up the good work, dude!

Monkey ball and marble madness are absolutely comparable... Like, both are Time attack games based on controlling a ball with simulated physics mechanics. Good video, but that comment setting SMB and Marble Madness as incomparable made me chuckle.
You should play marble madness with a trackball, once you do you'll notice how much it influenced Super Monkey Ball.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! As someone who also shares in the hype for Banana Mania, Monkey Ball videos are going to keep coming!

I just now learned about that Pythagorean theorem level... I always just randomly moved around until I got it lol. Great video btw, thought you should know CZcams actually recommended this on my home page 😂 big W for a small channel like us!

Wow, I never know exactly where my videos end up (only so much YT analytics can convey) so it means a lot to be on the home page, thanks for giving the video a shot and glad you liked it!

12:07 The N64 Controller had Octagonal gates too so this point doesn't really make sense

Yeah I could have totally phrased this better. It's the difference in sensitivity that makes the controllers feel different, not the shape of the stick or the level of control. The GameCube controller is really sensitive compared to the N64 controller so N64 physics are designed with that in mind. That's why it feels like you have more control in an N64 game on an N64 stick, whereas on the GC controller and other modern controllers can feel too sensitive. I also feel like the way the N64 controller sits in its socket, you feel the gates less than on a GC controller which is where the original comparison stemmed from I guess. What I was basically saying was that without the gates to snap to 8 directions with precision, the amount of sensitivity and accuracy would make the game feel off for tight movements. I probably wouldn't bring the N64 into the conversation at all if I made this video nowadays though, and I think I kind of clarified what I meant more when I made the more appropriate distinctions between the GameCube stick and the Xbox/PS2 sticks in my review of Super Monkey Ball Deluxe.

I still consider this one of the games that can fight for top 10 status on the GameCube, which is insane considering the lineup for the console. Great video! Keep up the good work!

Actually, I’ll say as a certified Explorer, this game did scratch a certain itch. I’d try to find ways to go out of bounds to see more the levels. Which is…hard in this game but way way wayyyy easier in smb2! Infact, in dogfight the space level has a seam on the floor that lets u completely go out of bounds! But yeah, I’d try to sea all of the details of the backgrounds in each level (and party games). A couple of ways to do this: build up speed, get into a weird position and pause to look at the bg, that sort of thing. So these games REALLY scratched some sort of exploring itch. Id make up monkey lore for the backgrounds (ESPECIALLY in 2. So many details!). So I guess if you’re the explorer type and pretty autistic, there’s alot here for you.

I keep trying to like this game but I just don't get it,it's bland, gameplay is extremely basic but frustrating, feels like I'm handicapped with no camera control, music is annoying and creates urgency but isn't enjoyable,a mix of calming music and music like pilotwings, tetris and so on would be better suited
I went through level after level and just found I would hit a brick wall dying over and over till I figure out the levels quirk then move on to the next,it's not fun to me,it's frustrating and tedious,I would complete some levels very simply by going slow and making sure the time limit never ran out and this was extremely BORING 💤
Then on the silly levels that have a certain way of moving, either fast or slow would take me far too many attempts till I figure it out but when I figure it out its more of an eye roll moment
I'm a huge sega fan, love crazy taxi and just about anything sega does is awesome to me but this game is simply confusing as to how anyone likes it
Monkey ball feels like trying to thread a needle while driving a car and someone is tickling you with a feather and if you don't thread it within 5 seconds your car is going to catch fire and there's anoying music playing on the radio
This game is like a form of torture to me,iv looked at speed runners play it too and I just think, why would anyone want to waste such a long time getting good at that ?

    • @PixelPowerstar
      @PixelPowerstar  Před rokem +1

You know, that last comparison isn’t that far off in the sense that for those who click with the simple mechanic of rolling around, being able to thread the needle despite everything thrown at you is satisfying to master. It’s very much a subjective game feel thing and definitely isn’t for everyone.
In the case of this specific game, I had a lot of the same issues of the presentation being kind of dry and the difficulty being very high with how little lives you’re given, so feeling like you hit a wall is accurate. Outside of the minigames, it’s very much a port of an arcade game that you weren’t expected to beat and has some quarter-munching design. If the case is that the level design is a bit too no-frills or the content is too repetitive, but the mechanics still seem appealing, then I’d recommend you try the sequel, Super Monkey Ball 2, which was designed as a console game first, featuring more engaging ways to ease into the level design and get better at the game through its story mode alongside more unlockables. If this specific one is too hard then the remake, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania has all the content of the first two games but no lives, so it’s much more forgiving if all you want to do is finish the game. Your complaint about the soundtrack is definitely a unique one, but even in that case, the remake has a new soundtrack so maybe that might help you.
Otherwise, it’s a pretty simple and arcadey style of game where the appeal is mostly in the game feel so I’d understand if it just subjectively isn’t for everyone. If the core game is a bit too dry for you then a lot of the nuance I go into in this video would be lost.
