      Because Cricut cannot cut Acrylic. The thin sheets used in the video are PETG and not PMMA. The 1mm thin sheet is actual acrylic and that's why it's not working.

      @@AngieHolden Laser engravers / cutters use low resolution for cutting wood because wood fibers are spaced apart. acrylic is not. using wood settings on plastic is generally not recommended for any cutting device.

    BE CAREFUL, This is not Acrylic. Acrylic is harder and more brittle. This is PETG. I'm selling acrylic and you need a laser cutting machine to cut it. Even the thinnest acrylic won't work on Cricut.

    I successfully cut a 2mm thick piece of acrylic using the knife blade on the "Heavy Chipboard" setting. This cuts 24 times and cut it 3 more times. This scores the acrylic enough to be able to break it apart by hand by placing it on the table with the larger side hanging over the table, holding it down firmly, with the score line right at the table edge and then pushing down. This should make a clean break. Not sure how well this will work on curved pieces, but I had good success with straight lines

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  Před 2 lety +4

      I have definitely scored thicker pieces and snapped them but my recommendations are for the thickest it will actually cut through.

    Great vid...very informative!!! Based on how I’ve seen people use and cut thicker acrylics and plastics by hand, a lot of times they score it with an X-Acto knife and then break it at the score line to get the shape they want. Have you tried to use the cricket to score the plastic and then cut off any excess with straight edges and then break off the cut pieces from the score lines? I’m not sure if I’m explaining it correctly but I may try it and if it works I will let you know.

    I tried this today with the acrylic you recommended but I cannot find a basswood setting on my Maker. I’ve seen that setting on other videos but it is not listed in my materials. Any ideas? Thanks for any help!

      Are you on computer? It won't be on mobile. Also if you have anything in your design like engraving or writing, it will also not be there.

    Great info! Can you tell us what the maximum thickness of acrylic works for engraving/etching on the Maker? I see blanks out there that are 1/4" thick, but not sure if that would cause the mat to hang up on the cutting mechanism. TIA!

      I usually start with the basswood setting and watch it to see how many passes it takes.

    so i bought a sheet of acrylic from lowes which i know is thicker than 020 how do i cut it to a decent size since the cricut won't cut it they are 1 foot by 3 feet sheets i'd like them down to a smalller more manageable size

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  Před 4 lety +1

      I would get a blade for a scroll saw that would cut it.

      900 degree hot knife, or heavy duty utility scissors - the kind with the thick handles and short, slightly serrated blade.

    Hey Angie! Can the Cricut also add printed images onto the sheet? Is this the Cricut maker or the Maker 3? Thank you

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  Před 2 lety

      You couldn't print onto the surface of the acrylic. You could upload an image and "trace" around it basically with engraving lines. The Maker and Maker 3 will do this.

  • @BooCreamy
    @BooCreamy Před 2 lety +1

    For the .02 with 14 passes what was your pressure on? I have a brand new knife tip on too... someone had said 14 passes will cut my mat.?.

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  Před 2 lety +1

      I always keep checking the cut to see if it is through by pausing the mat. It just depends on what material you are cutting as to when it will cut through and damage your mat. I don't know what pressure setting it was.

    • @BooCreamy
      @BooCreamy Před 2 lety

      @@AngieHolden so I successfully cut them... it did cut into my mat a lil but if I went any less passes it wouldn't cut all the way through... just don't want to destroying my mat

    I am still contemplating if I should buy the Cricut Maker or not. I will be using them to cut acrylic sheets and other projects as well. Have you tried cutting out names. I mean like the outer shape of a names and then I can just cut vinyls to fill in the names. Idk if I am making any sense. Your information will help me greatly. Thank you in advance!
