    Hey friends!
    Have you ever ventured into the world of dehydrating food?! You should give it a try! It's super easy & very rewarding! There are so many great creations YOU can make with a food dehydrator. Parker likes when I puree strawberries with honey on parchment paper and dehydrated it...then we cut them into strips for our very own homemade fruit roll ups!
    You can dry fruit, veggies and even back country MEALS which is what we'll be doing in today's video. Dehydrating is a wonderful way to preserve food for long time storage. Maybe you're going on a camping trip or sending your husband off hunting...or maybe you're like me and you've got a lil "prepper" in ya...and you want to have some food saved up JUST in case of an emergency! No matter what it is, dehydrating your food is not hard at all. Trust me! :)
    I'm always fascinated at how dehydrated food comes back to life when you re-hydrate it with some water. And you guys...with the right ingredients, it's delicious!
    In today's video I'm going to be making 3 simple recipes. Each recipe creates 3 meals and each meal will feed about 2 people...maybe 3 if your sharing with one of your kiddos!
    For these 3 recipes you will need your dehydrator & a kitchen scale (I bought mine on Amazon for less than $13). You will also need to cook & dehydrate your ground beef & chicken ahead of time. I used about 3 lbs of ground beef & about 10-12 chicken breasts. You can cook your meat however you'd like before you dehydrate it, just remember you don't need to season it because we will be adding seasonings to the meals before we package them up for storage!
    *Important* when you cook your ground beef, rinse it thoroughly in a colander under hot water...mix it around good and squeeze as much fat/grease out as you can...too much grease & fat can spoil the food quicker! Then I just lay out the ground beef on a cookie sheet and press out the excess water with paper towels before dehydrating.
    I dehydrate all of my meat around 155 degrees for 8-12 hours & I dehydrate the mixes I share in this video at about 135 degrees for 8-12 hours.
    For my dehydrated meals, I shoot for 150 grams total per meal. 50 grams of that is my meat & the rest is made up of the mix & seasonings that I add.
    ✅ Beef Macaroni:
    1. Dehydrated ground beef
    2. 2 cups cooked macaroni noodles
    3. 1 cup chopped yellow bell pepper
    4. 1 cup sautéed onions
    5. 1 cup diced tomatoes
    6. 2 TBS powdered milk (can add a little extra if you'd like)
    7. 2 TBS powdered cheese (can also add a little extra to make it more cheesy!)
    8. A pinch of salt & pepper
    ✅ Chicken Spanish Casserole:
    1. Dehydrated chicken
    2. 2 cups cooked rice (any kind of rice will do, just make sure it's cooked)
    3. 1/3 cup salsa
    4. 1 can of cream of chicken soup
    5. 1 can of rinsed/drained black beans
    6. 1/2 cup frozen corn
    7. 1/2 tsp chilli powder
    8. 1/2 tsp paprika
    9. Pinch of salt & pepper
    ✅ Chicken Curry:
    1. Dehydrated chicken
    2. 2 cups cooked rice
    3. 1 cup coconut milk
    4. 1 cup sautéed mushrooms & red bell peppers (about 1 bell pepper & 5-6 mushrooms)
    5. 1/2 cup frozen peas
    6. 1/2 tsp garlic powder
    7. 1/2 tsp chilli powder
    8. 3/4 tsp curry powder (a little extra if you'd like)
    9. Pinch of dried parsley
    10.Pinch of salt & pepper

    These are great recipe ideas, I'm definitely going to try them! One thing I want to mention is, when I used to brown my ground beef in a skillet before dehydrating, I was not very impressed with how poorly it re-hydrates. There is something about caramelizing the meat that prevents it from returning to the same tender texture it had prior to dehydration. Now I boil my ground beef in a stockpot full of water, rinse it with hot water, pat it dry, then dehydrate it. This method gives you dehydrated ground beef that re-hydrates more readily back to that softer texture.

      So true! I have found this same thing! I ended up using my food processor to grind down the dehydrated meat that wouldn’t rehydrate and put it in a chili so it wasn’t wasted and tough. That caramelizing creates that outer seal so nothing can get back in.

    I have that same dehydrator :) I brought it late last year after years of saving and researching.
    I would definitely recommend it as an investment.
    Buy 'out of date' - older model if budget is an issue, I did and I'm so glad to be able to upgrade from cheap dehydrators which would last under a year and I didn't feel safe using them for meat.

    Well a couple of comments.
    Thanks for the video. Good to see the ideas getting out there
    If folks are going to use 150F temp, that's going to preclude a LOT of the dehydrators out there. I have found if you can get 130F on your machine, you are fine.
    I think there's a bit too much fuss about removing the grease from meat. Keep in mind, the fats are where the flavor is. I have found that the rinsing in hot water process is not worth it. Just get a low fat lean burger mix, use a paper towel in the frying pan to get any fat you do see... and call it good. And lastly, go ahead and season the meat with salt and pepper when you're browning it. The seasoning will bind with the fats and "soak into" the meat. It's a pretty different taste sensation when you just add salt to a dried mix instead of salting the meat.
    I have made meals where the ingredients, like beef or turkey, vegetables, pasta, whatever... are all dehydrated first and then mixed when dry. There's some logic to this, but I have found that the meals taste better when all the flavors and textures bond together during a normal cooking process. You like how the meal tastes when you cook it? Good. That's what you got. However, big chunks of food won't work... and you should definitely add more spices than you normally would because dehydrating will "kill" some of the flavors.

    Most vacuum bags are capable of boil-in-bag, so you can literally just pour the water into the bag, then set aside. Especially if you have a bag cozy made of Mylar bubble wrap insulation.

      @@soonerfrac4611 we don’t boil in bags as it’s been proven through studies that doing this can actually allow plastic to be leached into the food. Over time that’s not good for our bodies. We don’t mind washing a pan.😊

    Thé recipes sound great. I have a Cosori and I love it. I bought it because it is so quiet. The only negative is the music, I think something soothing would be better, especially when it gets loud when you aren’t talking. You did a great job.

    The dehrydated chicken and ground beef look awesome. I have bought and used TVP for yrs. I rehydate it in chicken,beef or veg broth for using in meals[chili is a fav] with the sky high price of meat I find buying and using TVP is a very nutrious and cost saving alternative to meat? I am also a apartment survial disaster prepper and TVP has a very long shelve life. Great for making diy camping meals?

    I'm a single household so every ounce of food needs to be used. If I make a roast or something similar I either have to freeze it or eat it for days. Dehydrating is my option. Please share more details about using the soup (dairy?) Or coconut milk (oil). I don't want to risk anything getting rancid. Thanks for the help!!

      I’ve never had them go rancid. Of course they won’t last forever but we’ve kept ours for over 2 yrs without issue. They’re delicious!

    Omg I tried your curry recipe and it isoooo good ,I didn’t have the curry you had so I used madras curry ,I took a little out of my dehydrated mix ,made up the spice you said put it in a lil bowl scooped half of it out and boiled up enough water just to cover put on stove in pot boiled the water out of it added spices omg it was so good I could only give my husband one spoonful ,but I’m the curry person in our house and I love curry anyway ,I will make him some when we go camping he really liked it too,I was just testing it and it gets a big 10/10 from me ,I just hope it stores well I also haven’t got the chicken so I’m definitely going to try it with chicken and it’s also yummy without great extra staple to have dehydrated!!

    Yes how long does your dehydrated meat stay shelf stable? I've canned mine, due to longer shelf life, but would LOVE to dehydrate some complete meals that are shelf stable but I dont have a freeze dryer, which I understand is how prepackaged soups are done from stores, ive never watched your channel before so just putting these out there, so many preppers say NOT to dehydrate meat that its too risky to go rancid or it doesn't stay shelf stable, I DO want long term storage that is off the grid, no power so its why I canned my meats, many say the meat tastes like real meet this way not dehydrated so I'm going to watch the rest of this video maybe some of the questions will be answered, I DO vacuum seal my jars of dehydrated foods, and if I use things out of them I re-vacseal them quickly...
    Thank you in advance, hope ppl don't think these questions are stupid, just trying for the first time to try to put dehydrated meals together, ive never done completely dehydrated meals before only separate foods, those I've done for years, but concerned about doing meats, I hate waste so I've canned all my meats so far

      Hello! Technically per USDA safety guidelines, canned foods are only safe to consume up to one yr. But we all know that’s not always the case as we’ve safely eating home canned foods well over a yr old and been fine.
      Same goes for dehydrating. They say up to 1 yr. But again, we’ve eaten dehydrated foods over a yr old.
      In my opinion dehydrating meat is just as safe as canning it. And it still tastes delicious! 😊

    Since fat is not desirable for dehydration is it ok to sauté onion with a little EVOO? Or something else or nothing? Really want to try this!

      They say 2 solid years. But we’ve kept things longer & it’s been just fine! Just have to check smell, texture etc., go with your gut.☺️

    These recipes look great! You said 150 g per meal was that per serving, or for 2 servings you packaged ? Also I wanted to know if I add more than enough water to cover my ingredients to get a saucier recipe would that compromise the quality of my meal? Thank you

      The whole package. Anytime you add more liquid it will dilute it so you may have to add more seasonings to get the flavor you want.☺️

      Hello! It all depends on how you store them. But if vacuumed sealed correctly & stored in a dark place, they will last up to 2 yrs!

      Hi Megan, Just add your dehydrated meal to a pot or bowl & add just enough boiling water to cover the dehydrated mixture. Allow that to sit for 15 minutes to rehydrate! :)

      Hello! For about 100-150 grams. In terms of rehydrating, I generally boil two cups of water for each meal and slowly pour it in. Usually, two cups does the trick, but sometimes I only need 1.5 cups, and I would rather add more later than for my meal to turn into soup! 😉

      Hey Wilma! Can you clarify for me? I'm not sure what you mean. All the ingredients are mixed together and spread out on the dehydrator trays & then dehydrated.     I just wanted to ask is your background in your old house in Washington or new in Alaska, is the food in the large jars freeze-dried or dehydrated? Do you freez dry any food or just strictly dehydrate? I am new to all. I am wanting to do some long term storage any suggestions>? PS love your video even the rants and agree same thing happened to me not in military but was in healthcare field. Hubby was Airforce.

      Hello, we don't live in WA. We love in VA...but only for 3 more months until we retire and move to Alaska :) But in this video...the background is in our home here in VA before we sold it. We're living in. temporary apartment until we leave for Alaska this fall. We have never freeze dried yet, only dehydrated. I'd like to get into freeze drying though once we're settled in Alaska. Thank you and your husband for your service to our country! :)

      Sorry about the mistake, and thank you guys for your service as well I certainly appreciate all the sacrifice. I usually can everything I make from scratch but I am starting to dehydrate for long term storage, but don't want to put it in glass jars, was wondering how long do you think that the spanish chicken and rice meal lasts in mylar in a 5 gallon bucket with o2 absorbers? also with the hb meat did you add a 1/2 cup bread crumbs when cooking, I saw a video that if you add the 1/2 cup bread crumbs it will keep the meat from being like gravel. I don't know havent tried but thought it was interesting. Thanks again and God bless you and yours. :0) sonshine.

      Well, internet says 2 yrs, but I think if they’re stored properly, possibly longer. I’m not 100% sure tho. It’s a matter of opinion most people say, same thing with canning. Some people stick to the hard rule of 1-2 yrs…others say 20 if they’re put up right.☺️

    Just curious why you don't add your seasonings to the mixture before dehydrating.

      You can if you’d like. I just prefer to add it at the end because the spices are already dehydrated basically so why re-dehydrate them with the mixture ya know?😊

    Doesn't the cream of chicken have too much fat in it to properly dehydrate? I'm new to dehydrating and really want to make meals like this

    DO NOT rinse your ground beef off in your sink. Putting all that grease down the drain can clog you pipes pretty badly. Just pat off with paper towels.

      I’ve never had an issue with this & it’s essential to get the fat off of the meat as it’ll cause the meals to go rancid. Patting with a paper towel will not remove the fat.

    155 degrees! That's cooking temperature, I thought you wanted to dehydrate the meat, not cook it. Oh you mean 68 degrees Celsius not 311 degrees Fahrenheit (which is what 155 degrees Celsius is). Now I understand. The rest of planet Earth (ie not the US) doesn't understand nor do they ever use Fahrenheit.

      @@Charzander570 internet says like most dehydrated foods, they should be eaten within 2 yrs, personally we’ve kept them longer and they’ve tasted just fine & we didn’t die!🤣
