Portland's Tilikum Crossing: A Bridge for People, Not For Cars

  • In 2015, Portland, Oregon opened North Americas's longest car-free bridge The Tilikum Crossing, a bridge that allows travel for pedestrians, bikes and scooters as well as light rail, streetcars and buses!
It's a superb transportation marvel, not only elegant but one of the most multi-modal places in the United States connecting logical routes not only now but in the future as Portland's Southwest waterfront continues to go thru its development. It also connects to the equally exquisite aerial tram to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) which in turn boasts the largest bicycle valet service in North America!
Being around the area on a few summer days it's easy to see all this beauty and planned car-free options in action.
Here's Streetfilms' love letter to Tilkum which makes the case for other cities considering transportation options near bodies of water that there are many great reasons to do it the same way. There is virtually no noise. The footprint of the bridge is small since interconnecting off-ramps and large roads taking up valuable real estate is not needed. The comfort for those using active transit (bikes and walking) was carefully considered. And the fact that it can accommodate three different modes of transit: streetcars, light rail and three bus routes is a huge selling point.
And the final wonderful feature: the LED lights on the span change colors based upon the temperature and water level of the Willamette River! Believe me on a beautiful summer night you want to stay on it forever.

From a Dutch perspective. Finally. Progress from a car centric society and attitude towards a human centric society and attitude. Well done. And please continue humanizing your society.

Every city should be a bicycle friendly city.
Bicycles make life and cities better for people and the planet.
Bicycles are fossil fuels free transportation. The Climate Crisis needs Climate Action.
Speak up for bicycle paths, protected lanes and trails in your community.

That is a great way to get more people on bicycles, no doubt what so ever.
Hopefully more places in the US follows, it's needed.

Portland is well on its way to becoming a model of the future city, but it still lags behind the many progressive cities in continental Europe. Pedestrianization in European cities spread quickly from the 1970s, so they are decades ahead of sister cities in America. Perhaps soon Americans in places like Portland will reach the tipping point where the automobile is recognized as the chief destroyer of city life. Eventually governments backed by strong public opinion will eliminate cars root and branch from dense urban areas. Then we will discover the urban gems - the beautiful spaces and neighborhoods, shopping districts and waterfronts - we had hidden beneath all the highways and parking structures, smog, noise and traffic jams.

@@teuast honestly, as a cyclist in the portland metro(outlying areas) portland is behind seattle, fort collins, most of socal, and even NYC. our culture might be more bike friendly, but our infrastructure is WAY behind.

Korodullin Werks Santa Cruz is like that too. Infra is for shit, but half the city builds bikes and the other half rides them so it ends up being pretty nice on the whole

I really like the wider parts of the bridge, whoever planned this realized that some people would stop on the bridge to experience the view or sunset and those things and built a dedicated place for people to do that in a way that it doesn't interfere with the primary use of the bridge.
The bike valet though... is that a paid thing? The whole valet system is so very American and if the bike valet is pay to use I feel that that is a waste. Like do I really need to pay someone to move my bike 10 meters just to park it, Americans can't be that lazy.

Portland reminds me quite a bit of some European cities and to an extent some of the Canadian cities. If only the Portland of 2023, could fix the multitude of social problems and violence in that city. Otherwise I prefer Portland to the majority of US cities and Metro's. That bridge reminds me of the Zakim bridge in Boston, another US city that has a somewhat European look and feel to it. I prefer the Tilikum Crossing Bridge in Portland, especially since vehicles are not allowed on it.

      @primevaltimes Před 11 měsíci +1

Portland isn’t especially violent, despite what the news would have you believe. The real problems in the city are homelessness, vandalism, and theft. Even then, it has gotten slightly better over the last couple of years. It’s still not where it was prior to the 2008 financial crisis, but it seems like rock bottom has finally passed.
