Today, Lisa and Layne discuss some of the most frequently asked questions about grow lights. They cover grow light placement, when to move seedlings under lights, how long to leave lights on each day, and whether or not seeds that need light to germinate require grow lights to sprout successfully. Why do you use a germination chamber instead of a heat mat?
Which seeds do you put in the germ. Chamber? Why?
Also, how do I know when I need to change my heat lights? My plant rack is old but has hardly been used.
What will the seedlings do if my lights need to be changed out. Don’t want to have to go buy more lights if I don’t have to.
Thank you for this! At what percentage of sprouting does one move the seedlings from the heat mat to the grow lights? If 50% are sprouting and they are moved off the heat mat, will the rest continue to sprout even though they are away from the heat? Thank you.
Hello! In general, once 50% of the seeds are showing signs of germination, the rest should not be far behind, and germination typically continues once the trays are moved off the heat mats (of course, this can vary based on the seed and the growing conditions in your space). The reason we recommend moving the trays under lights once 50% are showing signs of germination is to prevent those seedlings from getting leggy. We do not want to risk the 50% that have sprouted getting leggy and weak waiting for the remaining ones to sprout (which may or may not ultimately happen). Hope that makes sense! At 2:40 in the video, the multiple heights of the seedlings under the same grow light, at one height, is very surprising. I would think the tiny ones would get leggy with the light that high, this isn't the case, obviously...
I know - it is surprising! 😲 It all depends on the intensity of the lights you have 💡 I know quite a few people with very intense lights that leave them around 24” above their seedlings. Thanks so much for your comment, and have a fabulous weekend! 💚🤗💚

Had another question not related to this video but a concern. I had planted some foxglove last year that might bloom this year. I just got a gardening email that said the following, can you please comment if you grow foxglove? Also would love to know of any other flowers that might be ones to avoid for about the same reason, so can you produce a video about that? Here is what it said in the email I got,.Thanks!:
"Foxglove is an enchanting, ephemeral flower often seen adorning informal or English garden paths, adding a quaint romanticism to places bereft of color. Despite its beauty, it contains poisons that can inflict treacherous harm. Poisonous to the touch, its toxins can be absorbed through the skin and cause an allergic reaction. All parts of the plant contain digitalis and other cardiac glycosides that can disrupt the heart when ingested. While foxglove has been used for medicine, self-medication is heavily discouraged. Foxgloves are a naturalized species that thrives in slightly acidic soil in partial shade. In some places, it is considered an invasive or weed species."
What is the seedlings on the top rack? I would consider that leggy unless that the way that plant is supposed to look. I am confused

I need some help.please. What do you think might be wrong with my set up please. I've tried waiting for 50% germination, but ended up with week leggy stretching seedlings, so I have to put under my growlight as soon as a couple are showing. It seems I'm getting only about 5 or 6 seeds germinating out of the 20 cell block? Maybe 2 or 3 stragglers. The seed is fresh and mostly from highly reputable suppliers here in the UK. Any suggestions please?
If I’m getting led shop lights for grow lights, what do you recommend for the amount of lumens and K for the lights? I see most are around 4000lumens and 5000k
