    OH BOY lets shoot back to the 1970s, where housewives all across America didn't have Facebook or a subreddit -- but submitted their tips and tricks to this anthology of sorts!!!!!!!!! I love reading through ~vintage~ material to see how different and similar things were for generations past. It's interesting to see how what we learn nowadays is coming from pretty strong roots. (Not a single mention of house husbands or non-heterosexual couples, as if those simply did not exist just a few decades ago.... :-)) I'm glad to see things have changed but it's clear with this only being a few generations before us now, I'm sure there's many ways to go! When our kids and grandkids look back on the 2020s, I hope we have come even farther by then!
    Anyway, aside from the social differences, it was really funny to read the tips and tricks. It was mostly "use this object as a different object". or "tricks" that to me were really....really self explanatory LOL. But entertaining to read nonetheless!!! I hope you enjoy!! I've gotten a LOT more requests recently to read from books, etc.; so I figgggured I'd be pretty safe copyrightwise with this one!
    If any of your viewers grew up in the 1970s, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comment section!! Is this book accurate to your experience of expectations from your mothers or yourself?
    Sleep well, little housewives!!!!!! You have a LONG DAY ahead of you tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!! !! ! !

    As a parent I can confirm that your free time does get pretty slim especially in the early years. Once they’re older and can do things on their own you get more of that Free time back. Helpful hint: introduce your kids to as many of your favorite hobbies as possible so that you can enjoy things together.

      It definitely flips your life upside down for a bit. The biggest difference is that you have to make it a priority and plan alone time for you and your husband, plus time together. It takes a bit to figure that out, but well worth it. My boys are still little, but I already see my 3 year old is getting more independent. This comment had great advice. Also, make sure to let your kids play independently, it helps a ton when you can even get a few minutes alone!

    1973. I was 8 years old. My mom was one of "those women." She got a divorce in 1968. She was a single woman with 2 kids and a job at the local newspaper. 😮 The house was immaculately clean because we helped. "If they're old enough to walk, they're old enough to dust" was one of her sayings. Great video. Could almost hear "Angie" by The Rolling Stones playing.

    • @wendyraye
      @wendyraye Před 2 lety +3

      It sounds like your mom instilled very good values. I was born in ‘70, parents split in ‘77. I can’t remember NOT cleaning the house from too to bottom every week!! To this day my biggest pet peeve is kids not helping with anything when they are perfectly capable - boggles my mind how some parents allow that.

  • @rex-racer
    @rex-racer Před 2 lety +144

    There’s free time when you have kids. It’s just sporadic as with everything. At first, it’s when they nap. You can also take turns with your partner. Time with kids can be free time too-playing, reading. And then, all of a sudden, they’re older and doing they’re own thing a lot. Treasure the moments together, no matter the age. Put the camera or screens down sometimes and just live.
    BTW, I’m a child of the 70s. My mom stayed home until I was 10 before working part time. Before that, she taught violin lessons at home. She was incredible. She cooked, cleaned, did laundry, took care of my siblings and me (and definitely did the index card thing-addresses, recipes, vinyl records). My dad was great too. He worked all week, fixed up the house on the weekends, mowed the lawn, kicked the soccer ball with us. It seemed like the era of use more, repair more, throw out less. Feels like yesterday and a million years ago at the same time.
    I doubt you’ll see this since it’s way after posting and is among a thousand other comments, but if you do, thanks for the look back in time.
    Oh, and your mom’s earrings and grandma’s dress are groovy. You just need an avocado-colored fridge, some shag carpeting, and Ben in a wash-and-wear shirt with a big collar and a wide polyester tie (and no beard, of course-just the ‘stache).

    As a new mom, this book is saying all these things that I needed to hear when it says that things get easier as children grow older, the whole "taking 15 minutes to have time to yourself" thing and that things don't have to be perfect, to take care of yourself first before trying to get things done. Now I want to find that book and see what it says in the section about taking care of children. So far it seems legitimately useful for the most part.
    And yes, at least so far in the newborn stage I appreciate every minute that I can sleep or take care of basic needs in peace, never mind using free time for hobbies unless they can be done while breastfeeding. Sleep is my biggest hobby right now. It's pure bliss and I miss having a full night of it! I probably should get out of the house sometimes like the book suggests, but most of the time I'm way too overwhelmed. Now that I've gotten that off my chest and baby detached, I think I'll go back to seeing if I can put her down in her bassinet and sleep.

I don’t even have that right now haha! 😂 This book has some genuinely good advice though. As a mom of 3, your free time definitely dwindles. I often have to choose if I want to get some things done or have me time while my youngest naps. I tend to choose chores and then stay up too late trying to have me time and then am super tired the next day.
    It does get a bit easier once the older ones start school. I have one left at home right now as my kids are 10, 6 and 2. It can be easier to do smaller chores with less kids running around. But I still feel like the kids bathroom is always a mess no matter how hard I try. Lol. But everyone always says you will miss the messes once they leave the house. We shall see. 😅
    I do miss hanging out with friends and being able to just go out and do whatever with my husband whenever we want. I only have one person who watches my kids for me, so I have to wait for that person to be available and then hope my husband can work within that time frame.
    However, I love being a mom and my kids are my everything. I do think it is normal to be afraid of motherhood before you have kids though. Kids are a huge responsibility and not everyone should be parents, let's be honest.
    But if you were to decide you wanted to have a baby, I think you would be the most amazing mom! That would be one lucky little bébé.

    That moment when the 70s and the year 2021 meet when Gibi takes out her phone xD

    Speaking as a parent, the first year does take ALL your free time. But now that he is big enough to play with toys, my son is way easier to handle. I can set him down with blocks or a ball and get some me-time in.
