      Ok here you go standing still in a situation like this is certain death the staff has the momentum and leverage advantage. A sidestep and parry is basically your best bet in a situation like this but you need to be skilled at parrying and you need good footwork. I will admit though I only have basic weapons training maybe like a year and a half to two years so by no means am I “ the expert “ on this

    • @peteemayer5210
      @peteemayer5210 Před 3 lety +7

      @@trevormurray617 To be honest I think a short range weapon would be in the advantage. Because it takes a lot of time for the opponent to swing the staff you could just storm at you opponent very quickly and strike. Also considering that you are wearing metal armor you could just deflect that staff with your arm and in a case of a spear get out of the range of the dangerous blade. I mean it would still hurt and you would probably get a bruise but that's it.

    • @trevormurray617
      @trevormurray617 Před 3 lety +7

      Petee Mayer your right I do think it depends on the start distance and the type of staff, I definitely didn’t take armor into account because I’ve always done it in cloth gi’s ( I think that’s how it’s spelled ) so you don’t really get the luxury of using your body that way. Armor definitely changes the dynamic to allow less skilled fighters to stand a good chance since they have protection from attacks and can use their body as a shield to open the opponent up for an attack and then since they have a larger slower weapon it would take serious luck or skill to get out of that situation as the guy using the staff.

As you said two people of equal skill the staff may win simply due to its reach. I'd see it a a battle of foot work, attempting to close and extend the gap to suit your weapons range.

      Bo and later Jo were proper weapons studied by Samurai and professional warriors in Japan, for example by a kind of police force. They can be very effective, quite like Skall demonstrates with the quarterstaff. The Jo, specifically, sacrifices range to gain more flexibility and allow for both ends being used in fights. For example a prepared overhead strike can easily be transformed into a stabbing and vice versa.

      mainly cause he's out of measure. If he was in measure some of these blows if delivered with the intent to harm while pressing the point of impact forward the staff would easily go through the guard. Regardless of parry. The buttress added at the end of a QS to enhance the weight-to-end of the QS makes them more deadly and heavier to even attempt to deflect. Which would force the sword user to not only shift angle but to attempt to 'flee' the blows each time... Or face a rigid blow to the face or arm, either would put you out of the fight effectively. A broken fore-arm kills just as well as a caved in skull. for a sword user. I'd rather a shield to skate the blows away personally. But if you don't have that option you're effectively boned against someone with a reach advantage. Even with good armor.

    Got me a walnut walking stick I've had for over 20 years. Love it and use it everytime I go hiking. I remember about 11 years ago I walked up on two HUGE hogs that decided to charge me. I managed to run up a live oak and just started swinging my walking stick like a club. Managed to eventually hurt the hogs enough for them to run off. Stayed up in that tree for hours.

    While there are videos of spars between different weapons, I liked how this illustrated the theory and mechanics behind issues of various parries and attacks in and out of measure.

    Not being a huge weapon enthusiast just a passing interest due to being a sword lover when playing fantasy games, I've was surprised when watching a few of your vids as well as Shads, that even though the sword is shown as the go to weapon in these games as well as on screen, that you guys say it was actually the polearm, was the main battle field weapon, so this video really opened my eyes as to why that was. Also enjoyed the video but especially the part where rather than stating what you guys know, you actually played around with the best way to defend with the sword/buckler.
