I always loved this scene. Where Thomas has his very human moment of fear and doubt, totally understandable given what he's seen that morning. And the Sgt just doesn't have time to give him any big motivational speech he just tells him whatever he decides he has to live with it forever. And as the convoys pulls out the Sgt sees him standing there, still making up his mind. And as the last Humvee passes he jumps onboard and the whole cinema punches the air and goes 'YESSSSSS!' at the same time!

When people shooting at you? You will truly have the fight or flight moment. Then, if you start to THINK?
It is an unspoken truth. Why we have a Armed Force, the "unnatural act" of war. That IS the job, no matter what you sign up for.
I jumped out of planes, which is " unnatural act" of jumping out of a perfectly good flying airplane. Then there's THIS.
It's not just the risk involved but, the inhumane choice they make & living with it, forever.
God bless the Rangers. They train with this in mind, after this moment

the sarge handled this perfectly, there is not much you can say to a man who is afraid to die. you just gotta leave him an open door,. it is their choice to walk through it. often they will when you don't look, when they feel pressured they will often tense up. just give them the old "follow us, and no one will say a word about anything." and get to it

They show just the 3 humvees that brought Blackburn back to base as the only vehicles that went back out on this quick reaction force but in reality they had more vehicles including more 5-ton trucks that went out with this QRF convoy because they were going to the second crash site and were going to link up with the initial assault convoy that had been shot up so bad so they needed more vehicles that could run and load all the casualties up. The QRF convoy had Delta operators and Navy SEALs on it along with Rangers.
Both convoys met up near the second crash site and were going to try to rescue the crew members and Shughart and Gordon but there were roadblocks at all the entrances and they were already taking heavy fire and had a ton of casualties so they just went back to base

The book was outstanding. The movie was very good, but seemed to push a narrative that the Army Rangers were some kind of JV second string unit that needed hand holding by the Special forces elements in order to fight effectively. I am quite sure that was not the case. Either group would be extremely lethal and self sufficient in any type of conflict. The lack of armored support was a far bigger handicap than some imaginary shortcomings of any of the brave American Warriors who fought there.

Long story... you hide it in the entrance physical. Trust me, they may not find it. You do your basic in the time of year with the lowest pollen. Once you're past the 90 days then the discharge gets harder for the military. Get a civilian doctor to write the asthma prescription, have it filled off base, and the army will not really stop you.

You are likely correct. However, after multiple deployments to the Middle East I developed Asthma. I served in SOCOM (I was not an operator). However, while running individual PT, hating the heat, etc., feeling sorry for myself, I was passed by a Double Amputee! He was no longer an operator, like me he was serving in a supporting role. I didn't know when I saw him in uniform. So, odd things are possible, if unlikely.

Many personnel who served with the support elements of a SEAL platoon or detachment, often refer to themselves as "SEALS" some are also graduates of BUD/S.
Unless I can Prove they are committing Stolen Valor, I usually keep quiet. Partially because I worked with some guys in SOCOM that I would Not have believed, except I was there, and my duties resulted in my knowing.
Also, in my work as a Service Officer, assisting my fellow Veterans with VA claims, guys I had figured for Service Support MOSs, turned out to have been "Bad Assess" during at least part of their career!

Per the actual book, he had to give up his inhaler in basic since he thought it would be considered contraband , and suffered a severe asthma attack several days later. His drill sergeant was so impressed by his heart that they kept him. In real life it was not Thomas that had the inhaler it was another Ranger called SPC Steve Anderson. They just sort of combine the characters for the movie. In real life it was also Thomas that had 2nd thoughts about going back out, as depicted in this scene.
