Gary Gordon and Randy Shugart, both Delta shooters, asked to be put in to try and help Durant. They were both killed and both awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions.
@@uciratz If you had 1/100 the courage of those two men you would realize how stupid your comment is.
It shows you don't fight for your country, not your government, but the brothers beside you
@@uciratz F u
Both Gary & Randy knew they wouldn't survive and as a soldier I understand
We know, we watched the movie
3:03 I learned one thing from this scene: If I'm ever driving a humvee in the middle of a firefight with insurgents armed with rifles and RPGs, I'll wear my goggles.
well now days they have bullet resistant glass that can reliably stop up to 7.62x54R FMJ
@@lostwizardcat9910 it was an explosion that broke the glass, not bullets
@@thatmomentwhenriley9472 I'm aware but the glass we have now doesn't do that. The windows in our modern Humvees are huge and heavy, dont shatter, and are backed with plastic. anything short of a direct hit isnt going to do anything to the windows.
The line that always stuck out to me is when the forward air controller says, "they've got a clearer view of the situation then we do, they know what they're asking.". They knew that they were most likely gonna die, but they couldn't live with leaving a fellow soldier to certain death if there was anything they could do to prevent it. There are ppl who will die for you and ppl who will die with you and Shugart and Gordon fit into both of those categories which makes them truly exceptional soldiers and men.
Truly inspirational there my hero’s I have everyone I know know these gentleman’s names
Well said brother. Well said.🫡
Gotta agree! That's one of the most moving scenes of the whole film, especially when (IIRC) Col. Harrell asks Shugart and Gordon to say what they intended to do..... because he knew he was most likely sending both men to die. We talk about the World War II veterans being the "Greatest Generation," but the guys fighting in Mogadishu that Sunday in 1993 were cut from no lesser cloth.
I think Shughart and Gordon knew they were going to their deaths but wanted to save a fellow soldier in the process. To sacrifice your life to save someone else is the bravest act you can ever give. I have nothing but respect for these men.
They probably thought they were all gonna die but didn't want the pilot to die alone 🤷
both awarded the Medal of Honor, frist honor medals from IIWW
They knew they were going to die down there. But they couldn't just leave a guy to die abandoned.
They had combat experience knew what they what they were doing why didn’t they try to get roof of building might’ve had a chance
@@PostalWorker14 chance of what? They knew they would likely die, they knew they would definitely die the moment they found out the pilot couldn't run. As you can see in the movie and in the real life event, further help never came. If they holed up on a roof they would meet the same fate. If the pilot could run though, they could have made a break for it but he couldn't and they weren't going to leave him.
Tom Sizemore in one of his best performance. RIP.
RIP
This was terrible.
@@dickriggles942 You’re gonna die alone, Dick.
Wow. It just happened too… He was every wannabe bad ass’s inspiration (myself included) as an NCO.
Saving Private Ryan as well. His rough edges helped him in these type of movies.
The guy that got hit by the RPG was an army ranger named Richard Kowalewski, died at the age of 20.
Too young, far too young
Before social media had drones but weren’t armed before MRAPs
Yes, CPL Richard "Alphabet" Kowalewski. Apparently, after the rpg struck, his companion on the passenger seat reported a secondary explosion which almost blinded him. It is believed that the RPG triggered one of the flashbang grenade Kowalewski had in his vest pouch.
Some extra information.
There was a third Delta operator with Shugart and Gordon that day. Sergeant First Class Brad Halling provided sniper cover in the Blackhawk when Durant crashed. As they waited for permission to go in, their helicopter also was hit, wounding one of the crew-chiefs. Taking control of one of the M134 mini-guns Halling stayed with the Blackhawk while his two comrades went in. Shortly afterwards, Halling's helicopter, Super Six-Two was struck by an RPG the cabin. The explosion took off Halling's left leg above the knee. Super Six Two managed to return to base. Initially Halling was to be discharged for his wound. He refused it, even petitioning the Army to reverse the decision. It was granted. Not only did Halling stay in the Army, within two years he was swimming and running and skiing. He was even put back on airborne status. Doing twenty years in the Army he retired in 2000, with the rank of sergeant-major.
SPC John Grimes (Ewan Gregor) is based on SPC John Stebbins, who earned the Silver Star Medal in Mogadishu. This change came because Stebbins was convicted and sent to prison for thirty years for child rape.
Rocket Propelled Grenades, mostly from RPG-7s, they don't travel that slowly as portrayed here. In real life you blink and you miss it. They are slowed down for the movie for the audience to understand what's going on.
A soldier having an RPG lodged in him is Pfc. Richard Wayne Kowalewski Jr. The rocket also amputated his left arm. He was only twenty-years old.
Othic, "but I'm shot, colonel" is Pvt. Clay Othic who was one of the first casualties of the operation, being shot in the right forearm, breaking the bone.
The actor who played Maddox, McKnight's driver, was Michael Roof. Sadly, he committed suicide in 2009.
Colonel Danny McKnight (Tom Sizemore) was wounded in the neck and arm during the operation.
All of Durant's crew survived the crash, although all are wounded. When Shugart and Gordon reached them, the two Delta operators moved them about to form a perimeter, distributed weapons and ammunition. When the site was overrun those that remained were killed by the mob.
Thank you for this extra info !
I didn't know that the crew initially survived... damn.
@@Melior_Traianoand the trully trully horible part is that after they killed the crew and Gordon and Randy they drag their bodies down the streets of the city😢

Easily one of the best war movies ever and definitely the most exciting. Proud to say I watched this on the big screen.

3:59 when your car breaks down in Detroit
😂😂😂
Ah another gif enjoyer I see
I like how the movie shows them using semi-automatic instead of full auto. To many movies show soldier doing mag dumps, when soldiers rarely ever use full auto.
Basically wasting ammo and possibly you will get killed if you always use full auto.
I remember how the ever-diplomatic instructor put it for us officer candidates: This is automatic, you can forget it exists, you won't ever need it. This, is semi-auto, set your weapon to that.
That's before burst-fire became a thing anyways.
ONE of the BEST movies EVER made!!!!!!
It's been 30 years since the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3rd and 4th 1993 but this movie is based on the true story
You mean, "and was based on a true story".
The best war movie ever in my opinion.
Agreed. Better than even Saving Private Ryan.
@@DestinyAwaits19 well that's based on WWII and this is modern war on terror / insurgency
@@DestinyAwaits19 it's not even the same type of war, it's like comparing a movie like 300 to 1917, the main subjects and the context are clearly different, it does not make any sens

3:33 that MP5 sound effect is lot like from the movie Air Force One
Yep. Good observation.
Sounds good to me
Well that is what the MP5 sounds like.
The horror of urban warfare.
Perhaps every armed forces in active combat zones in this world (besides NATO and allied forces) had experienced such scenario atleast for two or more times.
Compares to those, this scenario was much better but I must say that this movie did fantastic job in depicting the horror of getting killed in worst possible way, a fear that every soldiers have in them.
Was in AIT when this happened. We started to punch holes in the walls and push down the wall lockers. We had to be ordered to stop. Worked with the Rangers who were there. Sgt Floyd and Sgt Phipps.
0:49 If I'm remembering the book correctly, I think when the real Grimes got shot at with an RPG, it blew his pants to shreds and his crown jewels were swaying in the wind. Funny part of the book considering he lived to tell the tale.
Then he used those swinging jewels to rape a small child. What a world.
Yeah, well, I reckon the director thought death was a less cruel fate...
@@Beef1188 Did you read my comment? He didn't die
@@AwkwardDuck88 That's why he said Director.
@Heretics shall be cleansed Yeah, but he didn't die in real life, the book, or the movie. That's what he's saying. I suppose me saying "swaying in the wind" makes it sound like Grimes' crown jewels were damaged by the RPG, but if I remember correctly he was fine in that department.
RIP Tome Sizemore.
I had to Google this, had no idea he died
Crazy how that 50 caliber ammo can't go through that sheet metal 😂
Yeah or the cinder blocks lmao would turn both into dust
One of the things I’ve noticed, besides the fact that delta force prefers to use hockey helmets (a direct shot from an AK, or m16, will penetrate your standard metal helmet)
As well as wearing roller skating knee and elbow pads so if they need hit the deck they can.
Is the radio equipment, the microphones on the delta force guys.
The ability to communicate and coordinate, in warfare. Yeah, that’s gives you a bit of an edge.

Gimme a fucking break!

Respectfully…They HAD to drop Gordon and Shugart…the massive balls and cast iron hearts of those 2 were weighing the chopper down. RIP.
2:10 holy mother of God that RPG warhead is hit that soldier's body
He actually survived that, only dying after getting off the truck at the base some hours later.
@@MrBejkovec that's what I'm trying to tell you when one Milita fires an RPG at the truck that soldier has a warhead in his gut
In movies life this, you can spot how experience makes so much difference. Listen to the war veterans, the seasoned ones.
Awesome dude was rocking the M14 w a silencer
The guy rocking the suppressor on his weapon system is Master Sergeant Gary Gordon he was rocking a Colt 733 with a sound suppressor. Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart was rocking a plain M14 with just a Aimpoint and a color scheme
1:27 - OMG poor doggie…..
This movie had an all star cast didn’t it… even some of the non main characters… Orlando Bloom, Tom Hardy, among others, lots of depth to the overall cast.
That's what gives it its staying power. As well as the action. If the cast remained unknown then the movie would be confusing as to whose who, but since most of the actors got famous, its easier to identify each soldier.
I like this movie but the part they kept our Malaysian forces bravery hidden kind a disappointing .
Ótimo filme e um bom elenco tmb Irene 🗡🗡🗡🗡🗡👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
I liked Grimes's character. He's the pencil-pushing, coffee-making, desk-job soldier who never saw combat till this afternoon. And the movie never tries to give him some cringey redemption arc, as a lesser movie might have done. Even in his bravest moment facing off an enemy machine gun crew, he fumbles the grenade shot and barely pulls through. He does not suddenly become a badass.
The completion of Grimes's character development happens not in some heroic battle action, but when he says "I wanna walk (on my own feet)" as he limps and hops to an evacuating vehicle. That's it. He's not Rambo. At the end of the movie, he's still a pencil-pushing clerk, still a bit of a coward complaining loudly why the fuck the armored car won't get going. But he has learned to walk on his own feet while bullets are flying by, and he has earned the camaraderie of a Delta Force warrior (Fichtner).
And that's enough to make us like him. He's a comic Private Upham of this movie--the coward we identify with.
😮 Save it private ryan and then this one
Both greatest movies of all times!
Putting in work with that M14
I was there... We got our butts kicked no shame in admitting it... This is what happens when arrogance and lack of confirmed Intel goes wrong... But we learned from it... R.I.P to all that paid the ultimate price....🇺🇲

The commanding unit didn't expect the resistance was so strong, so this was a great strategical mistake. If there were some gunboats and Apaches, the operation should be more successful.

"overwhelming numbers beats any army" - mongol empire
how does that apply to the mongol empire? they were frequently outnumbered against their enemies.
@@simonphoenix3789 Well i guess the Mongols would know because they seen it done many times against them.
@@simonphoenix3789 At the beginning, but when they took over China and other empires, they got their soldiers. The Chinese were and always have been awful at warfare. Notice that whenever the Mongols fought anyone competent, they got rocked. In Japan, supposedly a storm wiped out their fleet...in Europe, supposedly Ogodei's death caused them to end their campaign there. The Mongols were basically stat-padders who couldn't beat anyone decent. If China was more competent as a military, they might have stayed in Mongolia with the sheep and remained poor raiders.
