    Very informative and appreciated! Could you please adjust your picture in picture, or remove it altogether at points? There's a few times where your picture-in-picture is blocking text in your slides or blocking what buttons you're clicking on.

    Great series. Looking forward to part 5!
    For my current company intranet i'm leaving out the local navigation as much as i can because of the lack of breadcrumb due to the new flat structure recommended by microsoft. So i tend to put all my links in the global nav, would love to hear your views on this particularly on the breadcrumb (or lack of)...

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před 5 lety

      thank you for checking out this video. You have a very interesting point with the breadcrumb...honestly this has been a non-issue for us so far. I actually did not notice it missing. To your point though, since everything is "flat" and with the mega menu exposing so much content with a single click...majority of the time a user should be 1, and at most 2 levels deep with content. With a mobile first, cloud first stratregy...the expectation is that the user will be using the "back" button (on their respective devices) to get back to "familiar" ground...thus eliminating the need for the breadcrumb. I would recommend taking another look at removing the local nav. I think the local nav will be essential to navigation within an "area". So if "Pay & Benefits" (aka HR) is an area (site collection), then the local nav will highlight key information within that area (i.e. Benefits, Payroll, End of Year Tax Documents, Vacation Policy, Make a Change, etc...). Hope this helps

      @@DeShonClark very valid points, no breadcrumb definitely makes sense for mobile. My mind is shifting to the new modern sharepoint thinking but its just trying to get business users thinking this way too. Definitely will revisit the local nav and you make a valid points in the video about taking time to plan the navigation. Keep up the good work bro!

    Hi Deshon, thank you for all of your videos that are clean and focused and very informative. We have a specific situation that is to do with the navigation strategy and on our Information Architecture. This is what we have. Our intranet is on the SharePoint 2013 On-Prem farm. We have let users create site collections based on a couple of templates (slightly modified Team site templates). This was probably a mistake and now it's too late and we have to live with that 15000+ site collections. We are now ready to migrate over to SharePoint Online. We are thinking grouping the Business Units (BU) together first, and then on each BU, have sites for each Directors under that BU and then migrate the logical On-Prem site collections under these directors. This will lead to a heavy load of links. Do you have any idea on how we can plan for a Global navigation for this kind of scenario? Have you come across with Navigation hierarchy of over 1000 site collections in a SharePoint farm?
    Your help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před rokem

      so sorry for just now seeing this. There is NO navigation structure that will accomodate 100+ site collections. Nor will any user understand the structure that would make it useful.
      There are some solutions on how to manage this, navigation is will be 1% of the solution. The key is to understand why there are so many site collections and how the users are using them (most of the time it is for projects), secondly, there needs to be some type of search solution created to enable users to search for the sites they use the most, and lastly there needs to be some strategy implemented (retention policies, site collection life cycle) to help identify the old and abandoned sites and "archive them"

    Thanks for this series. Like your MasterPage development for SP 2013/SP 2016, this is very useful series. Can the lookbook be used in on-premises environment?

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před 4 lety

      thanks for watching, the lookbook will be available for SharePoint 2019 on prem as this is the first on-prem version that supports modern SharePoint "pages". Just note that not all of the modern web parts used in the lookbook will be available in SharePoint 2019 as SharePoint 2019 will always be two to three versions behind SharePoint online.

    Hello, thank you for your Videos, they are really helpful in building our new Intranet with SharePoint.
    I have a question: Is it possible to get to applications outside of SharePoint directly? For example, I'd like to create a button on the Hub-Site, which opens our ERP-System.

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před 4 lety +1

      thanks again for watching!! I think I understand when you say "opens an ERP-system". There are several options for this. If it is a direct link, this will work. But if the link points to an "internal system" that requires authentication, this link will only work if the user is logged onto the company's network (i.e. if they are browsing on their phones or off the network, then the link will not work). If you need to show the ERP screen embedded inside of a SP page, then this may require a custom web part that will allow you to in an external system. In short, you may need to get creative to make this work, and just be aware of linking to "internal" systems, as there may be scenarios where the link does not work

    Thank you for this great series! Im evaluating CMS called Akumina used as front dev and admin tool for Spo, did you hear about it? If yes what do you think about it? Thanks

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před rokem

      Hey there! I'm glad you're finding the series helpful. Yes, I have heard of Akumina. It is a popular CMS (Content Management System) used as a front-end development and administrative tool for SharePoint Online. While I don't have personal experience with Akumina, it has gained a positive reputation in the industry for its capabilities in customizing SharePoint. I would recommend doing some research and possibly reaching out to others who have used it to get more information and insights. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi DeShon, for your 'Forms and Templates' column would you link directly to the documents e.g. 'letterhead'? I am looking to do this but there doesn't seem a way to open the document in a new tab? Thanks.

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před rokem

      Hey there! Thanks for your comment. In the video, I didn't specifically mention linking directly to documents in the Forms and Templates column. However, you can definitely do that by adding the direct document links as navigation links. As for opening the document in a new tab, SharePoint Online currently does not have a built-in option to do that for navigation links. But, you can try using some custom JavaScript or jQuery code to achieve this. Let me know if you need more details on how to do that, and I'll be happy to assist further!

      Hey Courtney, thanks for watching...I believe the same is available in Business Premium, I'm not 100%. I usually play with E3 and E5 tiered licensing. I am not familiar with the differences with Biz Premium

      Gotcha! Thanks for the response. I’ve seen in some of your other videos you ask for suggestions on video content... Maybe you’ve already done this but I think something addressing how to use a main hub as a template ( same layout, document library, lists, folder structure, etc) but keep the data in each hub site that is connected to the main hub separate. So that, for instance, hubsite1 users can’t search and find documents/data that live in hubsite 2 ( different set of users) although they’re both connected to the same main hub. Thanks again for another great video!
