    Hi Everyone! In this 1969 VW Beetle episode, we are replacing the rear brakes and also replacing the transaxle shaft oil seals. With the bearings finished in the last episode we can start to move forward. We use that cool torque multiplier to set the hub nuts to 225 Ft-lbs! :)

      Mark Stach they’re close to $100; if you have a VW it’s worth it to buy it. Every time the rear brakes need to get done those castle nuts need to be removed and reinstalled. Also works for the flywheel.

    These Beetle episodes make me want one... I saw a gorgeous mid-60s metallic blue Beetle the other day. It was a Coupé (not cabrio) but man did it look fun. And knowing you have these amazing video guides would inspire a great deal of confidence in that kind of purchase ;-)

    Excellent videos, so clear and concise. I appreciate your attention to cleaning parts before assembly. I have a 1974 Beetle entirely disassembled right now, will be going back together this spring and summer. A tip I learned working in the auto service industry for 25 years. Pack the channel on the backside of seals with grease. Sometimes when pressing/hammering a seal in, the spring that keeps the lip pressed against the shaft can pop out and then it won't seal properly. Not to mention the rogue spring! The small amount of grease won't contaminate the gear oil to any appreciable degree. I will certainly be revisiting your Beetle videos as I begin putting things back together!

    Thank you so much for these videos. I have the same 69 convertible (in much worse shape) and my retirement gift to myself will be to rebuild it.
    I just bought all the bits for a full brake rebuild. You do an amazing job detailing exactly what needs to be done.

      Heidi and Franny's Garage hi! No they said they are having trouble programming the new SME unit. Smh. In the meantime we drove to myrtle beach for three days so I’m not even going to stress it or make a video about it. Lol “they still have my car” won’t be a title this week!     As a painter I think I would have painted the raw cast iron brake drums to keep them from rusting. Just a thought. I really enjoy your vids!

    Great video as always, Heidi and Franny! One suggestion - if you use a stick of some sort and depress the brake pedal an inch or so before breaking the braking system loose it will keep the fluid from continuously peeing out.

    I also agree and reccomend that you removing the Brake bleeder helps. They went to 8mm for the bleeder to make it easier to open/close.
    However when reinstalling the brake cylinder I always screw in the brake line first with the mounting bolt only loose. Once the brake line bottoms, tighten the mounting bolt. Then tighen the brake line.

    Great job and very educational I did notice you keep calling the break shoes Pads they are actually called Shoes Pads are for Disk breaks and shoes are for drum breaks and your car is equipped with drum breaks no big deal love your videos

    The bolts are XZN. I use a Hazet 8808 - 8LG so the head of the ratchet isn't interfering with the dust boot. The cross section of the large circlip isn't the same on the inside and outside. Make sure the rectangle portion is to the outside. I always grease the inside of the seals, not just the outside of the parts rotating in them. I enjoyed the video. Thanks.

    Hi Heidi & Franny will you consider doing a full engine gasket on a 1500 VW engine ? I consider your CZcams Chanel is the best in VW DYI .I have a 68 sunroof VW beetle . Keep up the great work .

    Great video. I’m about to do my CVs. $80 for the entire assembled set is crazy cheap. Here in Australia, I just paid $600 for just the assembled CVs (4 of them). Including boots, grease, etc. only thing is removing the existing ones from the Beetle and fitting them to the existing shaft after the messy job of packing them. These ones I got are made in Germany. But what a difference in price.

      It is crazy how cheap they are. I wonder why the big difference. I just filmed the install and it still takes a bit of time to install them, keep the clean bit clean and the greasy bit greasy and then torque all the bolts.

      Heidi and Franny's Garage insane. Even with exchange rates and shipping, a fully assembled shaft with all the trimmings here, the price isn’t justified. But the only other option is Chinese, and I’ve experienced the pinnacle of their metallurgy... no thank you, it’s safer using Camembert Cheese.
      Thank you for your expertise and tips. I’ll be wire wheeling the existing shafts and probably giving them a little coat of primer and then black heat resistant paint. Then I’ll pack the new CVs and fit them to the shafts and cover them in fresh ziplock bags.
      Would you recommend added a clamp around the boots once you have them fitted? The kit I received didn’t come with any, and I kind of assume the little raised sections on the shaft where the small end of the boot sits kind of slides over that and sits there.

      That is a great question! The owner picked up a set of boots and such from a local parts place (we thought we would be able to just rebuild) and I ended up talking with the sales guy about that. He said they never put on a clip on the axle. I was like, Really?? I always have. He said I could use a zip tie! I went ahead and bought a set of clips and wouldn't you know, when the owner arrived with the parts the sales guy threw in four axle clips ;) Thought so... The full axle kits have clips on the axle as well so I would suggest to install them. You don't want hot grease dripping (or flinging) out the end of the boot ;)

      Heidi and Franny's Garage thank you for confirming that. It seems some local VW folks around here are of two minds about the clips too. On this current beetle I’m mechanically restoring, they don’t have any clips. But I might throw some on. It can’t hurt.

    Franny, you make it look so easy but I know from experience it isn't. The best to hope for is a job without significant problems and no surprises when you take everything apart. I love the torque multiplier tool and I'm considering getting one. I have to stand on the torque wrench handle when torquing wheel hub nuts.
    I'm looking forward to seeing the CV axle install! I recently installed two on the rear end of my SUV, and I basically had to hammer on them to get them to go into the differential. They won't go back into place even with a coating of differential fluid and a bit of grease to keep the C ring from moving out of place.
    One thing that amazes me is the use of c-clips, snap rings, and cotter pins. They are the safety hardware that is the last line of defense against a nut coming loose, a bearing from wiggling out, or a pin slipping out of its hole. They are all so tiny but so very important. They're used on everything from ball joints to turbos. I think about what they do and I'm in awe.

      I have 2 front CV axles left to replace. I did the rear end first because it was making noise and clunking, and felt very unstable. There were a lot of problems back there. All the suspension was completely worn out. The front isn't much better but it has more parts so more redundancy before it fails. The axles aren't easy to get to normally, but I will have all the suspension parts removed and the axles will be easily accessible.

    That torque leverage tool is awesome!! There doesn't seem to be versions of it for other cars though. I wonder why. It'd have been useful to remove the axle nuts on my LEAF. They're supposed to be only 135 ft-lbs but the doofuses at the dealer got to them at one point and they were tightened to what felt like a bazillion ft-lbs!

    Great video! You covered everything. Smart choice on the cv joint axle assembly. Years back the only option was to rebuild to save money but, now they are affordable as a complete unit. How did you not get transaxle oil in your hair as it was dripping? 😅

      I've done that a couple times and it is super messy. I'll add a bit in the next video if I have time on the disassembly and assembly of the joints. That is actually the fun bit!

      They are pretty fussy... I think the worst part is they need constant adjusting and if the cylinders leak it ruins the pads.

      Hi Pete, The owner provide the parts, but I think he either used Cl1 or Jbug. CP1 has them for ~$120.

    12:40 when you get that nut “ya zoo” tight......the big cotter pin will fit....you can’t really go passed the slot for it. You will break the nut.
    So essentially, if you have it on the ground with a big breaker bar.....when it stops turning it will be in the correct place to put the cotter pin.
    There are only 3 places...I think.....the key can go. Neat-o huh? Those Germans were smart.
    All bets off if the parts came in a blister pack with the words “ empi” printed on them.

    Your 4 post lift is shaking (around 14 minutes) and it looks unstable. Is that normal?

      Yes, normal for one that not bolted down. Yes, very stable.

    Franny works fast. Probably fast enough to beat flat rate. Thus, a colorful sobriquet: Flat Rate Franny. Were she a mechanic and not an engineer, of course.

    Bend both sides of the cotter pin! I didn't do that once, and the bent side of the pin broke off...and the whole pin slipped out. Not good.

      You had a brand new pin break when you bent it for the first time? Never seen that...

    Brake lube works a lot better than anti-seize it also doesn’t spread as easy.

    Like the channel I like to see to gal's that aren't afared to get dirty and are pretty darn handy. I will learn thinks form watch this channel too. I am a car person as well and I got a suggestion. I see your using the old style jack stands which works fine. But you gal's should check out the Powerbuilt 6000lb. unijacks theere much better and safer. There a jack stand floor jack and bottel jack all in one for about $65.00 a peace $130.00 for a set not too much money and are great and much safer then the old jack stands. Been using my for 2 years now and are great. Got mine at Pep Boys. Google them and and find them lots of places. Much better and safer.

      Thanks Matt, I actually have one! I was super excited to use it, but it won't fit under any of the cars :( It is a great solution because so many cars only have one jack point so where do you put the jack stand?? Those as you mentioned solve that issue. I just need to find one that is low enough to go under the car.

    A breakover bar 🤣 I guarantee you’ll never see a breaker bar sold as a break over bar. Almost seems like you intentionally call stuff by the wrong name.
