As a black American, black Americans, especially women have to leave the American culture behind when going to Africa… what would make someone so arrogant and disrespectful that they would go to another culture and not respect that culture and customs.. if the culture is to wear a hijab 🧕 then why would a black American woman be there wearing tight revealing clothes and not expect the locals to be offended??? Respect the country, culture, and customs when you travel

I absolutely agree with you I recognize many A.A fail to learn the cultural differences in the countries they choose to visit. And fail to respect those differences. Anything goes in America. Not so in many African and Middle Eastern countries.

Actually Tz is not as conservative as I expected. A woman wearing hijab today will be dressed like a video vixen tomorrow. I'm speaking on Arusha and Dar. Some government buildings will refuse entry but that's about it. Been here on and off for 2 years now.
I lived in Ghana from 2017-2019, I only came back because it was very hard to figure out how to get citizenship. I went to immigration several times and no one knew how to help me. I even brought a copy of the law that said we could get citizenship. So back into captivity in America I went. Over the 3 years I was in Ghana I spent like 35-40k. I rented a 3 bedroom 3 bathroom place, it was very nice. I didn’t want to come back but I can’t stay somewhere with no citizenship.

Did anyone ever harass you about any documents in Ghana? Were you ever told you could not do anything you wanted to do in Ghana because you're African American or because you don't have a citizenship? So you think once you go to Ghana, then it should be automatic citizenship just because youre from the diaspora? Do you know what some people could do with a free passport? You have to understand that not everyone who receives a free passport has a good mind and want to do better things in the country.

I've never experienced that and I am African American I think if African American people going to African learn about the culture, language, respect their beliefs and be modest when walking around change that American mindset adapt the African mindset. You can't go over there and don't respect their laws .

This woman did no research before moving. She was shocked by the culture, weather, bartering system, and visa rules. She expeceted to bring her brasen Westernized attitude to a conservative country and be loved for it. Life is about preparation and adaptation. Even the young men were embarrassed by the way she dressed. That says a lot.
I dont believe that African Americans are going to be able to assimilate in most African countries until there are more structured programs to help make the transition easier. As an African American we are wanting to belong and heal from generational trauma. We are not looking to be traumatized when we make such a big move to Africa. I know it may seem small to others but being over charged for us hits differently probably because it carries the feeling of being used and not really wanted. We carry that scar because our historical experience. Surely you can understand that.
Structured programs?? Brother Please! We have lived on that continent since the birth of man and will continue long after America has burnt up. No where in the continent save South Africa is in the top 10 most murderous places in the world but people still go to Columbia and Mexico on vacation. Actually, she is from Jamaica, not America. The title of the post is misleading. I think some are going to Africa with thoughts of the grass being greener. If you go with the mindset that everything works like it does in America (or Jamaica), you have already lost the battle. Be honest with your decision making before moving to Africa. Ask yourself: Can I adapt to living without all of the modern conveniences I presently enjoy now for the rest of my life? It's a personal sacrifice and saying it is one thing, but doing it is another. ✌🏽
Yes I agree, but I thought that living in a developed country, they should read and watch CZcams on the countries that they would love to reside. It’s a different country and mannerism. But the Hon. As an African born in Africa and raised by Africans in the diaspora, I have tried to go back home ( west and east) and I can tell you that there is an insidious hatred from africans that needs to be acknowledged. It makes the racism in American seem trivial and trust me I don't say this lightly. The issues are way more intense than just trying to fit in or adapt. I hate the perception of diasporans not being strong enough or being too spoiled to adapt.
Its not Against African Americans get another passport of another African country and go to another African country you will still have issues. Also there are laws and culture one has to get in the culture in some places one will be accepted others NOT are so small like bots-wan 2 million people very protective of their culture and language. Also people have to know Africa has never been one country Look at the visa issue before going and if accepted for residency learn the language and culture of your city or village or you will clash.Also know you might not earn half of what you are earning in USA.
We're not spoiled. We were brought up with these conditions in the western world. Just like other are used to their conditions. They come to the Western world and they feel like they've hit the jackpot because of the conditions we have here.

as a Tanzanian, this sister did not examine what she can do and what she cannot do in front of African communities. here in Tanzania, if you wear clothes that leave a large part of your body exposed, we will look at you and you will leave many questions for people,and worse thing is, it shows that she has gone to live in a housing complex, if she was in her own private house or went to a night club, she could be free to wear the clothes she likes, but if you go out, dress civilly, no one would be surprised. neither muslim nor christian we all respect dressing. the other thing is that she should have a local friend who would make her understand the life here and so that she can be close to the community.

Tanzania is a conservative country. Has this lady considered learning Swahili? If she shows interest in the language, she may see that the locals may be different. As in America, Americans expect foreigners to speak English; so why won’t she learn Swahili? If she does even attempt to learn she will find many locals to be very helpful.

As a black American who lived in Uganda. I’ve rarely ran into black Americans also it takes time to get use to living in some of these countries. I love going back.

The issue with that sister is individual versus group. She said she was a loner. Africa is mostly about groups ( family, tribe, friends). She didn't understand that it's about your team not just you. If you don't have a team, you're going to have big problems . Plus , in my option , a single black woman should not move to a Muslim country. If you are not from there, or speak the language, it's not good.

I think your experience living in Africa is what you make it. If you are open to learning and adapting to a new and different culture, language and belief systems you will love being there.
If you are closed off to new things and different people, the locals will pick up on it quickly and isolate you.

Erm nope.. as she expressed she was trying to make it what she wanted and that wasn't accepted. Tanzania is a tough cookie. It's one of the newer counties still in the spotlight. The cultural values hasn't shifted to the degree that perhaps people expect. Theres a lot that goes into going to a new country and dropping everything that you are, to accept the given culture. You end up feeling invisible, nothing about who you are is acknowledged. it's like your whole being means nothing, you just accept the new culture or leave. She seems like a gentle soul, not trying to push "her ways' onto the Tanzania's as such... Her age has nothing to do with it Moving to Tanzania, gives the idea that's she was quite open to a new experience. You cannot research from your home countries the intricacies of a country. You have to live there to truly know. I dont think she should be judged for expressing her thoughts on what she though vs what she got .. it's all lived experience... anywho I don't say this to keyboard battle, i say this because anytime someone doesn’t say what those that do not YET live here wanna here, that person always get criminalised in turn those want a full picture don't get it. @@AzaniaLondon My personal opinion is that the younger you are, the easier it is to assimilate to a different culture. I know many immigrants in America that live in separate communities with people from their home country only. They never learn English, they never really adapt or adjust to American culture except for the love of money. Their children have no problem with assimilating to American culture at all.
🧢🧢🧢 I’ve traveled east Africa an Tanzania a lot and for 1 they give you a year for your visa & you can apply at the offices 2 soon as I get there I am greeted with love an RESPECT matter of fact Tanzania made me have pride in myself as a Black Man cause of how much respect I got, 3 I had plenty of opportunities to do business there people were literally offering me to be apart of projects. I also noticed how she’s basically complaining about not being able to “be herself” because people would judge her for dressing too revealing… If that was the case, she was better off staying in America, where that sort of dress code (or lack there of) is accepted as the norm. TZ seems like a family oriented modest place where one could raise their children away from the debauchery and degeneracy… I think what makes assimilation so hard for some AAs is having to unlearn certain western cultural habits that we’ve grown accustomed to.

You are also “male” so you wouldn’t be mistreated. This sounds like a mostly Muslim country. There are many black women who have travelled to Muslim countries that have had bad experiences with the men being disrespectful to them. I do agree that black women need to be aware of, understand and respect the culture of the country they are traveling in or moving to. to an African country and see how they move culturally, spiritually, economically, and religiously. In my research, I see many of the African countries are either ATR, Christianity and Islam, now, I'm going to say something that will offend many when I say this, I find religions to be the biggest barriers in the African diaspora because none these religions were ordained by the Creator of the Heaven. They all got their origins from a man and his philosophical beliefs and a date when they started. They're cults. Religions divide people, and spirituality unites people. I'm sure this is going to raise many antenna, and it's not my intention to offend, and one of the main reasons why the world's is so screwed up royally. Any African Americans that goes to any African countries be prepared for some cultural shocks and leave your American cultural mindset at home if you can and find a group of people that will show you around and how a particular country move. Young sister, please leave your magic city girl outfit at home and dress accordingly to that country customs it will help the locals to open up to you more, I believe. Africa is a developing continent and has a lot of work to do with shedding the neocolonist mindset to put itself back on track and the world stage where it belongs.

When I came to the USA from the Caribbean, my sister sent me to the corner store to buy something for her! What I saw in the streets of New York made me cringe! On returning to her home, I told her that I was going back home tomorrow! She laughed at me when I told her what I had seen and she said we would be moving that weekend! Just so you know that TZ has immigration laws just like other countries, and if an immigrant wants to live in TZ illegally he/she will face the Law enforcement just like in America. Is that easy to live in America illegally? How many people have escaped to Canada from America just because they have no American Papers? Also Immigration Laws of Tanzania have NOT changed since Magufuli Passed away, they still the same..so don't fool people that because of new Administration a lot have changed. All people of all kind and Nationality are welcome to Tanzania but they have to come legally and acquire papers which allow foreigners to live in the country, just like in American countries, European countries and even Kenya.

Am I hearing hate & jealousy from even our own people over there? Wow, on top of the hatred and racism that we already deal with in America! I have always heard that Africans have hate for African Americans, even stooping to low levels of calling us lost dogs in their own language. I never believed it but after hearing these stories, I am sad. I had a good experience when I visited Ghana, however, I did get over charged when I shopped alone. I would not move back unless I knew a trusted person/family.

I'm sorry, as a Black person born in Europe, I feel that African Americans expect too much from the world. I saw in the comments sayng that Tanzia should provide a program for African Americans. Why should Tanzania provide you with all this? If I were to come to Tanzania, I would do whatever it takes to adapt to the culture. You are not handed everything on a silver platter. The problem is that most African Americans have never traveled outside of America and expect a red carpet while showing arrogance, for this reason i find it difficult to get along with African Americans. That is not how life works. Most Black people in the diaspora, such as Caribbean people, do not behave in this way. If you want to come to Africa, come with humility or don't go at all.

I started my. citizenship process as I was coming back and forth from USA to Nigeria. I AM NOW A NIGERIAN CITIZEN WITH NIGERIAN PASSPORT, NIN# AND DRIVERS LICENSE! If you don’t fit you don’t fit, many have been too westernized from nature/natural/tribalism/development/Africa…what seems great from CZcams videos etc is a different reality some of the time. Africa is about a new beginning, being reborn as black diaspora into someone of your own making reflective of the new environment. While we are black African descendants, we are all not native born African so ones have to be realistic, opening minded, strong, and have resolve about what moving to Africa entails; visits ok but long term it’s not for everybody. In my understanding, experiences, and outlook, moving to Africa is about creating what the black diaspora never had in the western world, and that is community…the opportunity to create a community with likeminded people from the west & locals is key to mental ease & peace of mind. What many in some cases naive & happy go lucky westerners believe is Africa shares the same standards as western nations across the board but not so. Africa is in its developing stage, and unless one’s share in that vision & can hold their own, to go to Africa without that in mind is not realistic, and in some cases you won’t find what your use too/looking for. Africa awaits its creators, not ready done repats who lived in a bubble all their lives…it’s going to take tolerance, tenacity & work, and as diasporas we have the opportunity to influence & help Africa grow in the right and truest sense…Food, clothes, shelter, clean water, natural medicines that work to prevent & cure disease…the basic fundamentals of life with black love; that is what one’s need along with some money to self sustain and invest in cash flow ventures. If your not rich don’t expect to be living that GoodLife fitness, in a mansion on the beach overly looking turquoise waters, eating grapes & salads to the sound of Kongo drums in Kente cloth outfits, while the limo waits out front to take one’s to the latest Burnaboy concert. Most don’t even get that in the western world smh and expect it in Africa…Less your a affluent colonizer descendant, in government or a major corporate player in the respective nation…your having pipe dreams. What you can expect is a decent home near the beach with cheaper rent or purchase price, local produce and/or grow your own garden it’s cheaper than big supermarkets with foreign import brand products; work out at home, all you need is discipline; a bicycle/local bike/mini bus/taxi/Uber to get around or buy your own vehicle; electricity can & will go out on occasion; buy bottled water it’s recommended; connect with other repats & locals… you win some you lose some like anywhere else…the African heaven most are seeking has to be built so it’s not there yet(automatically)…and the most important thing, budget budget budget…If you can’t cook and want to eat out 5 times a week you best be a tourist for a week or 2, if not things will add up; Next you’ll be famous on CZcams crying about how Africa didn’t work for you. A few more pointers, Dress the standard/modest/respectable, watch out for those mosquitos…long sleeves especially at evening/night and close your doors & windows, use fan & a/c if have to keep cool, Didn’t get melanated by cool temperatures but by the hot sun. Actually, she is from Jamaica, not America. The title of the post is misleading. I think some are going to Africa with thoughts of the grass being greener. If you go with the mindset that everything works like it does in America (or Jamaica), you have already lost the battle. Be honest with your decision making before moving to Africa. Ask yourself: Can I adapt to living without all of the modern conveniences I presently enjoy now for the rest of my life? It's a personal sacrifice. Saying it is one thing, but doing it is another.

As an American I seen a lot of raw videos of Africa that literally had me shook. Communities living in garbage slums, extreme poverty.... The Africans in America act like home is running through fields with daisies in your hair and the sun shining with birds chirping.... what we see and what I'm hearing are completely different. Even the African people I work with. They seem to want to stay here. I've asked them when are you going back home? Are you building back home???? What businesses are you setting up back home to help the community and yourself when you go back there? The literally look at me like I'm speaking a different language, never answering.
When I express how I want to go to Africa and travel, donate and possibly start a plan for relocating or buying property.... I'm side eyed and teeth are sucked😢😢. It's also very interesting how I'm told every stereotypical thing is only a black American thing!! I saw a video of a muscular black man , without a shirt, walking around a city in China.
That was not only silly but disrespectful. The same with workout clothes , common sense would tell you that what's acceptable in the US wouldn't always work in another country.

I don’t think that the people in the diaspora especially those in North America, please stop comparing America with Africa. I’m surprise of the Jamaican lady, she should know better. Africa is in its developmental and building stages. You have to go to Africa with some money and a building mentality. Do an in-depth and thorough research.
Your title is not entirely fair to your country. However, the reality is that black americans do not have support of the American government in moving to Africa and setting up successful businesses in Africa the way that Chinese do. Other races like indians move in tight clicques and form business communities with relative ease in Africa. Yet when African Americans try to build those communities, Africans complain that AA are not integrating in the broader African society. It is like damed if you do and damned if you dont. The fact is that other races have had a head start in Africa over AA. Those other races protect eachother so that they are not cheated or feel disconnected. However, many AA cant say the same when it comes to buying land, building a home, setting up a business and just doing the very basics of life such as establishing relationships to buying food to eat in parts of Africa.
Black people have to do a better job of working with eachother so we can succeed as a people wherever we may be stound the world.
Choose what you want to do. Either come back as Pan Afrikan or an expatriate. African Americans have a tough time differentiating between the 2 words. A Pan African is one who comes back with NO MONEY, looking for free land, etc. You SELL yourself SHORT when you go to another country demanding free stuff or complaining about your own country. An expatriate is one who moves in with a specific goal, with their own means of survival, promptly setting up a business and employing locals. You will live, literally, like a King when you come back with your own means. Now, AAs call themselves expatriates and then start begging for free stuff and start bawling when rejected.
Essential that Black people re-connect to God on a personal level and live a holy, moral and righteous life!
Then, we must re-connect to Africa to buy land, invest and create businesses!

We have to work with established organizations like the A.M.E Church. Going it alone in any foreign nation without an overarching body to support you is almost guaranteed disaster. This is not unique to Africa, it is the class structure setup throughout the nations. The USA military is treated like 1st class citizens. Try to live in those host nations without being in the military, and you immediately join the 3rd class. Like I said, this is not unique to Africa - it happens all over, even here in the USA. I am not AA. I am Jamaican. I have lived in America and have learned the ways of AAs and JAs. I find it difficult some times to navigate the separatism that can sometimes rare its nasty head from both. This was brought on by the colonist. They forced us to learn to hate each other and to be skeptical of one another. Apparently this holds true for even our brothers and sisters that were never stolen. I would love to relocate back to one of the African countries. Tanzania was one of my top choices. I am sad to hear the things this young lady experienced and that many AAs are leaving. I am still optimistic in my desire to explore Africa as my home. Thank you for this expose and for the different angles one needs to consider. I truly hope one day we will realize that we need each other. That divide and concur has been the only strategy the colonist have truly been successfully destroying us with.
As far as I see it, God brought my family to the Caribbean and this is where I belong, I have no interest in living in the lands of my ancestors Africa or Europe, visiting is one thing, living is another.

In this day and time, the majority of African Americans are 100% europeanized (although most are in denial) and culturally have no connection to Africans. The expectation of an African American's transition in Africa should be difficult because of the extreme cultural differences. You both are foreigners to each other. African Americans who want to move to Africa need to understand that they are foreigners to Africans, and as with any foreigner trying to assimilate into another country, the difficulty and hardship in adapting is expected.
Facts black people in America are colonized to the core. We are conditioned to be like them.

As a Zimbabwean this is not right. African Americans need to talk to locals and speak to local parliamentarians to change some of these archaic rules. How is it that a black person from the diaspora only gets a 2 week extension. It’s a whole bunch of BS and a legacy of the colonialism. We need common sense rules. Diaspora black people should get priority over all and any other race of people.
The problem is the lower level officials only care about bribes and the Chinese , Indians know how we move so they circumvent these rules. Meanwhile Tanzania is allowing the Quataris to buy thousands of acres in Masai land. Our leaders are a bunch of renegades.

Another big problem is the lack of African cultures, traditions, and values that African-Americans do not have because they never grew up in Africa. These values of African societies is what African-Americans should take into consideration. But above all, both Africans and African-Americans should re-adjust to each other. African governments should take this up as an educational project to allow our African-American brothers and sisters to easily intergrate. It is like an adopted child going back to start a new life to which he or she is not accustomed to.
