- United have a shaky defence starting this 21-22 season, and to see so many defensive mistakes made by the skipper, it makes me feel like how far United have dropped from having one of the best defenders in the world, the fearless Vidic, playing aggressively together with his clever reading of the game. Hopefully United with a new interim manager, can fix their defence this season.

Despite playing like an average player in Sunday league, he managed to earn captaincy, get paid millions pound a year, to be in top 10 earners in Man Utd (he get paid more than Bruno Fernandes), deal a contract to 2025 and even more. He has 2 or 3 great games a year but is full of errors himself and is always out of position which means he needs to make outrageous interceptions Maguire's skill bar may be lower but he's been a hell of a lot more consistent for us. For me it's Varane>Lindelof>Maguire> Bailly.

I remember watching Leicester playing and Maguire stood out in defence.......I thought he was what Utd needed, but like they say " Becareful what you wish for!!"
I remember seeing Maguire play for the first time and laughing at him for being a caricature of an old school english defender. When United spent huge money on him I really hoped that my first impression had been wrong, or that he'd improved a lot without me hearing about it. Unfortunately, he's been even worse than I feared, and I sure ain't laughing now...

Plus they had a great Defensive Midfielder and strong Central Midfielders. Also good Full backs. In conclusion, he was just carried by teammates so his errors were not obvious then. Maguire has never been above average.

A club with limited resources(or a national team) have to compromise and settle for someone like Maguire(tall, strong, slow, mediocre positioning and passing) or someone like Lindelöf(mediocre height/strength/speed, good at defending and passing).
A club with United's money, ambition and reputation should be going for defenders who are tall AND fast enough to cope with both counter attacks and crosses. A player like Bailly is worth gambling on, because all he needed to become a top defender was to stay fit and improve his decision-making. It didn't work out in his case, but if you want to find the next world class defender you have to gamble on the ones that actually have the physical attributes to get to that level.
