The late cretaceous was home to some absolute giants, although it was not the largest, Shantungosaurus was a powerhouse, and it was the largest Hadrosaur ever, and was a fascinating dinosaur.

Crazy how this Hadrosaur is entering the realm of Sauropods in terms of pure size. One of the only few dinosaurs that is confidently larger and stronger than Tyrannosaurus Rex. This is one underrated animal.

Could a Trex not hunt it? I know we're in the era of pushing back against hadrosaurs being portrayed as helpless fodder but a tiger can take down a water buffalo, komodo dragons hunt things way bigger and heavier than them, eagles risking getting crushed by going after deer or goats, not saying it isnt dangerous but would it be IMPOSSIBLE for a t-rex to hunt it? I feel like neither party would want to take a hit from the other regardless who would come out on top.

@@tofuteh2348 trex would probably leave it alone but if they were to go head to head shantungosaurus would win most of the time if trex managed to get a good bite on the neck or leg it could wait for it to fall over or die

@@Mrmillan351difficult to say. The Shantungosaurus would be able to barge and wrestle the rex, but remembering that it's a rex, one bite is a game over unless you're a genuinely big adult sauropod

@@tofuteh2348you’re using mammals, we’re talking about dinosaurs.
And Komodo dragons have poisonous saliva, and normally they don’t hunt animals as big as horses. Only if in packs or duo. Also Eagles have the flight ability and they hunt goats that are in the edge of mountains which makes their hunt more easier. Basically they don’t have to fight much, just get the goat to fall off the cliff, sure the goat would win if the battle took place in a more flat and safe ground

Naming it was a wasted opportunity. Shantung is Chinese for east mountain, in greek Shantungosaurus would translate as Anatolorosaurus that would be a perfect double if not quadruple entendre referring to its place of origin, it's relation to Anatosaurus, its beaks' semblance to a duck and a swan as well as its relative size compared to Anatosaurus.

Why do they call flower of the later cretaceous "early flowering plants"? Flowers appear in the Jurassic about 130million years ago. That's like 60-70my of existence.

as of the latest studies Shantungosaurus is the only dinosaur that is not a sauropod bigger and more heavily than T Rex. Spinosaurus is too skinny and nowhere near robust enough to even weigh 20 tons, just look at the skeletal structure of Spinosaurus compared to T Rex's. The T Rex's rib cage area, is significantly wider and way more heavily built(mostly thanks to those belly ribs protecting the T Rex's stomach area made it bigger) than the rib cage area of spinosaurus, and that is just comparing the Sue specimen, which is the standard average t rex size and weight, just the skeletal area of sue weighs 8.4 metric tons, adding the organs, the muscles, and skin, the animal is way heavier than 8.4 metric tons. and Shangtungosaurus lower weight estimates barely edges out the weight of the Bertha specimen of T Rex. Bertha T Rex weighed 13 metric tons, and the lower estimates of Shantungosaurus also weighed 13 metric tons, the higher estimates puts it at 16 metric tons, the 16-18 ton weight people have been seeing in youtube videos, that is actually using US tons or short tons, when you see the 16-18 ton weight on shantungosaurus remind yourself that you are looking at US tons, and not metric tons. Shantungosaurus is not that much bigger than the largest t rex specimen found so far, the upper estimates only puts Shangtungosaurus at most 2-3 tons heavier than Bertha and ED Cope which are the two largest estimated specimens of t rex.

Shantungosaurus wins, the biggest T. rex has a lower Weight and Strenth than an average Shantungosaurus, stop using the biggest Specimens (they are the Minority or particular Cases).

@@elmohead Such a dumb reason. Parrots are intelligent too and still they get hunted by birds of prey. Palaeoloxodon will win because of being heavier but at same weight, Ankylosaurids, hadrosaurs, ceratopsians, sauropods are way superior to any mammalian herbivore. They had better defence and more better weapons and more aggression.

To be fair, we don't really know how big Zhuchengtyrannus could get since it's known from such fragmentary remains. The fact the Sinoceratops was recently size-buffed to be almost Triceratops-sized with additional remains it wouldn't surprise me if Zhuchengtyrannus was pushing Tyrannosaurus-size.
