  • There are some people who are definitely "hat people." They look great wearing hats and it almost seems like they were born to wear a hat. Then there are people who think the can NEVER wear a hat. They're not comfortable or confident doing so. This clip from the Speaking Style Podcast was excerpted from the episode where we discuss our top 10 summer essentials. One of mine was a panama hat, which led us to the "hat person" discussion. I wouldn't necessarily call myself a "hat person," but I do love a good hat--especially a panama hat in the summer--to complete my look. Justus, on the other hand, is decidedly NOT a hat person. We discuss why that it, what contributes to someone being (or not being) a hat person, and some strategies for picking a hat that you're comfortable wearing.
The full episode is currently available wherever you get your podcasts and will be up on the channel later this week. Enjoy!

It’s complicated - maybe a hat looks awkward if one feels awkward wearing it. I actually considered buying a broderie-anglais patterned hat in navy but somehow I still don’t dare... A guy with a hat - that can be a great look. So special and confident.

If you're looking to get a hat, one experience I've made is that it really pays to search for a specialist shop selling hats only. I never thought hats (or any kind of headwear for that matter) would suit me. But I wanted to try nonetheless. So I seeked out an old-fashioned (but very grounded!) hat shop - and it worked wonders. The people there have an incredibly eye for face shapes and which hats to pair them with. It's such fun to have experienced people walk you through it. This way, I bet everyone finds a hat that fits!

Panama's are difficult and expensive. I hope I'm not misguided but they tend to be a resort or tropical. Also if your wearing one on a plane sucks. Most Panama suck on airplanes. It's almost impossible unless you fly first class and you have a beautiful weave straw fedora and you dont want to cry when it gets squashed or rain gets on it.
If your still not comfortable get what's called a crushable

I enjoy hats a lot. All I ever used to wear was a baseball cap, but since my style has evolved over the past 9 months or so I am getting into more and more hats; especially ones I never pictured I would wear. I always prefer no hat with styled hair, but I always enjoy throwing on my cheap Panama straw hat from the Gap this summer, or my flat cap and shelby cap in the fall/winter. When I was younger, I wore a fedora all throughout the winter. I lost it in a move and never replaced it. I loved wearing it even though some people may have thought I was trying too hard...in the last few years, I’ve gotten back into hats, starting with a straw trilby-styled fedora I bought from a street vendor in Italy. Works great for casual, summer days. A couple years ago I bought a Panama hat and enjoy wearing it when we vacation in the summer. Not too long after, I added a wool fedora. I only wore it a couple times last winter but man does it elevate your look. I think you have to find a hat you feel comfortable in and you just need to own it.

Most people who have had issues wearing hats, the problem is *fit* and not the hat itself. Not knowing your hat size is as criminal as not knowing your sleve length. 90% of the time, if you buy a hat by S/M/L or (ugh) "One size fits MOST", you're going to be disappointed.

First be aware that a hat affects your head elongation as well as your head to body proportion. A newsboy cap has a low proportion effect. A beard could help balancing the proportions.
Second you don't want to be The Man In The Hat. You need something else to draw attention away from the hat, e.g. a scarf or a beard.
The hat is a part of an ensemble. Initially it might be easier to adapt the rest of your outfit to the hat.
Finally, embrace the hat. Why do you choose it? A personal story can help, e.g. you acquired it on that journey or your grandpa had one.

I feel like viewers would have gotten much more out of this segment if you had interviewed an actual haberdasher or stylist who does a lot of work with hats, rather than a discussion between two people who don't know a ton about wearing hats or don't feel comfortable wearing and styling hats. There are tons of videos on youtube about the history of hats and the various types of hats, but they don't really go into much detail about how to shop for one or how to style one without looking like you're trying too hard. I was hoping this video might cover these topics.

Sorry to disappoint. You can read in the description that this is an excerpt of a longer conversation. There is no plan for these so you won’t get the same type of in-depth knowledge as you would in a stand-alone focused video.

Personally I think there's a hat out there for everyone. I have a black/dark gray wool herringbone scally cap that basically goes with anything. If someone just doesn't like hats it's likely they're setting themselves up for failure, in my opinion.

  • @AndreMonz

The real problem with the hat is our times. It fell out of fashion and menswear to the point it looks out of date and trying too hard. I can't wear it and very few people can pull it nowadays. What used to be the norm, now it take a certain personality.

“Hat-itude!” That’s what they said to me when I bought my Panama but was hesitant to wear it out. Gotta rock it. Oh it’s not the norm? The norm is a sloppy tee and baggy jeans over flip flops.

    • @AndreMonz

@@fawkesandhound I think that a Panama hat is kinda of easier to use without strange looks. But the felted fedora!... In Portugal, where I live, if you use a mustache or a felted hat without being over 40-50 years old, you should expect to be misunderstood.
Of course that us, the people who are into classic menswear, know better how to pull of a proper tie or use the the jeans cut for our body type. Don't even need to point this out!
What's your take on felted hats?

    • @hespokestyle
      @hespokestyle  Před 4 lety +3

I don’t really agree. It depends on how it is styled. If you wear a newsboy cap with a tweed waistcoat and trousers, yeah, it can totally look like you’re a little kid playing dress up.

I have to disagree as well. One of my favorite hats is the Stetson Open Road, a classic cowboy style hat. I'll wear it with khakis and a linen shirt and it looks great. The only thing that would make it look "cosplay" is if I threw on a pair of chaps and a long duster. In other words, it's all about the entire outfit.

I think only person who looks good in a cowboy hat is an actual cowboy, who works on a ranch and rides horses. It needs to be accompanied by boot cut jeans w/a large belt buckle, boots, a tucked in plaid shirt, and dare I say even a little dust!
Function has to follow form in order for the wearer to feel comfortable, which is why wearing a hat for the sake of just ‘wearing a hat’ feels awkward for most.
Back in the 1950’s and before, I think most men utilized the the true ‘function’ of fedoras & panamas. Even their hair styles (short cuts & pomade) complimented them, so “hat head” wasn’t even a thing.

Like most men who have a receding hairline, I started wearing hats for golf. Golf hats included flat caps off the course; over the next 15 years (now 58), the next was on dermatologist orders, a Panama hat to avoid melanoma worn during Spring/Summer with work suits.
A lack of hair then lead to a Fall/Winter warm crushable wool fur felt fedora from Borsalino (grey), then from Stetson (brown).
From then on, full clothes- horse mania as hats now naturally a strategic element of an outfit; now have about 18 top quality hats, cannot imagine leaving the house without one. Love them as much as shoes. Never saw that one coming....

I have to say I was rather disappointed with the brief conversation in this video. So we learned you like hats and the other guy doesn't. Who did that help? I'm sorry, but I am a hat person and assume you are as well. I don't feel you made your case. Let me say, saying that people look at you when you wear a hat doesn't always mean you look silly in it. That feeling comes from insecurity. I'm sure he would not feel the same if someone was looking at him in a suit. How does he know they're not laughing at him? Why? Because he feels confident in his suit. The same goes for a hat. I've been wearing hats for a few years now and a day doesn't go by when I don't get a compliment. When someone looks at me do I think they think I look silly? No. Why? Because I am confident in how I look in the hat. And THAT'S how you wear a hat.

As you can read in the description, this conversation was excerpted from a full-length podcast episode (75 mins total). We don't script our podcasts. I think you're mainly taken aback at is the fact that this wasn't a "regular" CZcams video. These are meant to be different than that--a more easy-going conversation with back and forth. Is this a topic that I could cover more in-depth in a stand-alone, super dedicated video? You bet. So sorry to disappoint you, Mr. Rodriguez, but that you for leaving that very thoughtful comment.
