Review written and video created by Glen Bolger - Hry
Where would you rank this game in the Metroid series? It has to be right up there doesn't it? Let us know in the comments section. Glen
From one Glen to another......yeah its right up there next to super metroid for me
@@fozandharley 😂 “from one Glen to another”.. Tis a tale of 2 Glens?!?! 😂 Maybe I’m losing it, but I couldn’t stop repeating that in a Dragons Crown, narrator kind of voice…Yeah I’m definitely losing it… lmao.
It will be my first Metroid game, so inevitably at number 1^^
I’d put it top 3. Possibly top 2? Super Metroid and prime
As someone who has pre ordered a physical copy of this game but still hasn't received it (games usually take a couple more days to get here), I was eagerly waiting for the SwitchUp review. Thanks a lot for this one Glen, now I just hope I'll receive it soon!
Idk man, I feel like a kid again. I am not exaggerating, I literally feel some rush in my chest and nervousness while playing it, either I need to check my heart or this game is truly amazing
It's a great game but a routine check wouldn't be bad
I feel nervousness, too - from the EMMIs stalking me, lol. Metroid “dread” is aptly named. It is tense.
Totally agree
Same here.
Good games with great immersion tend to do that. It's normal. Nice chemical hit of nostalgia and endorphins. The diablo 2 remaster has been the same way for me
This is my first Metroid and I love it. It is challenging and can be a bit unforgiving, but won't have it any other way.
Mine too. I'm going to go back and play the rest of the Metroid games after Dread.
Wouldn’t be Metroid if it didn’t. 👌
Thank y'all for giving our beloved franchise a try. It means the world to us long time fans.
@@arturo7926 jeez
Abit of spoiler
So far, the only boss I have any issues with is the Robo Chozos. I dislike the arenas. So annoying, till I just decided, just use missiles and flash dash, don't bother with the blue sword melee counters.
Played this all weekend and finished it Sunday night. Absolutely loved it!
How long is it?
The best thing about this game is that it shows Nintendo is starting to really trust external developers with their big franchises. I'm looking forward to the future of Nintendo games. Also, Dread is amazing.
I mean they already were close with nintendo because of samus returns and they were very involved in the project
@@rayzas4885 totally agree, but id say that there is a difference between a remake on (technically) Nintendo's old hardware vs a mainline title on the Switch.
Already know that I would absolutely purchase a Dread DLC. Hopefully the sales warrant a full sequel, though!
@@Blynat you're missing out on the best metroid experience in a decade then
Yes, and yet they censor so much CZcams from sharing content lol Bout time Nintendo does something right, eh?
I really thought you would say "so is this game EMMIE award worthy or a dreadful experience?" in the introduction :P
Haha, nice! I was way too flu-ed up to think that straight! Glen
That's good! 😄😄😄
My favourite comment of the day! 😅
I’ve been playing Metroid Prime on the GameCube recently. Dread captures everything that was great about that game and the early 2d games, making the gameplay streamlined and the graphics are fantastic. Can’t recommend it enough.
This is the first metroid game I’ve ever play, it’s very difficult but I absolutely love it! Great purchase
Same! Having a blast! 🤙🏽
Still on my first playthrough. I have played the Gameboy and snes versions and this does not disappoint. Emmi definitely ramp up the pacing until you get screw attack since your mobility just gets ridiculous by then.
I loved metroid prime and zero missions. All metroid games are great except fusion
Metroid Fusion was amazing too
Its so polished, and smooth- loving it. Between this and Disco Elysium I think I’m going to be good for a while.
My son and I are loving it so far. I was a little unsure with the price tag, but having played it now, I don’t regret the purchase at all.
Whoa! Hope you feel better than you sound. Well wishes for a fast recovery.
I had been waiting for your review on this 👍
Loving DREAD. Easily my game of the year so far. The ambience in the EMMIE zones is pure class. Metroid is back!
Yeah, the music is stellar. Different to the other games but fantastic still. Glen
We shall see I’m veering off that but who knows
Wishing you a speedy recovery! I was lucky to grab a special edition on my local GameStop on release day so I will be savoring this one :) (after finishing my rerun on super Metroid )
I'm loving Dread, my only issue are the EMMIs. With Fusion the SA-X was a pretty rare encounter, so when you did run into it it was always super tense and the chases were heart racing, bit you run into the EMMIs so often that it doesn't take long before the tension wears off and they just become annoying.
Yeah, less is more sometimes. Glen
@J Prez GET OUT
Hope you feel better soon, dude. Even on a sick day, your reviews are still better than most. Keep up the great work guys.
LOVING this game! I really love the fluidity of Samus' movements and it only gets better as the game progresses...her slide is so simple but so slick awesome awesome game ❤️❤️
After having played all 2D Metroids in the last week and a half, this one ranks #1! Amazing game and the level design is absolutely brilliant.
I totally agree. I didn’t think it would surpass Super, but it blew my mind. Nintendo knocked it out of the park!
You can't surpass the genre father of super metroid for me. Not possible. I paid for it at a Kmart through lay away with my first job, a paper route.
In terms of side scrollers though, is it better than ori, hollow knight, celeste and dead cells? I was expecting it to be under £30 just because its competition are all below £20. In terms of value for money dead cells seems the best in for what it offers replayability wise, how does the combat compare to dead cells / hollow knight / ori?
Ive never played a metroid game and id venture to play it except it would need to top my other side scrolling action adventure games, bar dead cells because i find that too steep a hill for it to climb.
The added 3d ish elements really polished this game up as well as the counter opportunities that lead into an almost cut sceen or camera pan knocked this one to the top for me too
I love dread so much! The only thing I have mixed feelings about is the music. At one hand, it provides amazing atmosphere and elevates the tone of the situation Samus is in. But on the other, it's missing (imo) those atmospheric/catchy tunes you can find all across Super Metroid (like the overgrown brinstar theme). It has beautiful composition either way, and I'm extremely grateful for the music and the game :)
I always hate the exclusion of theme music in modern properties/releases. Batman Begins is solid and I know Zimmer worked to make him "earn" his theme but I still think it was a bit muted and bland. Love the brinstar theme you're talking about.
I'm loving this game I've gone in completely blind as I avoided anything to do with the game and its just fantastic the movement is so smooth and quick, and the first boss that everyone has seen.....samus walk near the end of the fight might just be the coolest I've seen a video game character be
Thinking about buying it today.
Oh yeah when I saw that I immediately saved the video clip and then watched it like five more times it is soooo badass
Samus is a whole new level of badass in dread. It gets a bit scary later on lol
I'm almost through this game, and I am loving it. The movement makes me so excited for speedruns!!!
Playing through Super Metroid for the first time to get a feel for the series, and loving it so far! It's challenging but so satisfying. Dread looks like it'll be the same, now I'm excited to play it. Thanks for the review!
Hope you can get some rest and get better soon, Glen! Nice review, I have the special edition on order. 😁Cheers!
Excellent video as always! hope you get well soon. I wish I can play it but I fear that the difficulty level will not be welcoming to a new comer into the genre like myself. Regardless, I am happy for the OG fans and everyone else who are having an amazing time with it ✨
I haven't finished it yet, but I find my self "lost" more often than I'd like, maybe it's because I'm just bad, but it's still fun to explore
I got lost all the time as well on my first playthrough. Now on my second playthrough I realized the reason I got lost is cause I always veered off to explore.
It helps a lot once you get the scanner that lets you see hidden blocks.
Oh I checked the map every 5 sec mate.
That’s the point. But I can see how it can be annoying. I still recommend not searching up what to do and keep exploring. A tip, shot everything with everything
Yeah same. I just wish the map was easier to read.
Get well soon Glen! I thought it was a new reviewer of switchup. Great review btw.
I was always looked forward to your review of my fav games first, quite late but it's worth my time when seeing this. And your review is truly honest, make it easy for me to decide a final choice. Thank you!
Been loving it, love that feeling you get from finally figuring out a tough section.
Saw your recent video that it’s on sale, which led me here … I’m gonna pick it up. Thanks!
Hope you get better soon man!
Pure dedication my guy,You’re not feeling well but still find the time to put out an amazing review.👊🏽#zMetroid Dread is 🔥🔥🔥🔥GOTY 👍🏽
Thank you my friend. Glen
Loving it so far and the visuals look great in handheld on the new OLED...get well soon Glen!
Get well soon Glen.
The fluidity of the animations really helps make your upgrades feel more impactful. The way Samus seemlessly enters Morph Ball tunnels for example, using different animations based on the height of the tunnel, feels amazing.
This blew away every one of my expectations in the best ways possible. Didn't think it would match up to Super Metroid, but now I put Dread right at the top.
Edit: Fantastically done review by the way! Having finished the game myself now, I was happy to hear/see no spoilers throughout. CZcams can be a dangerous place for such things and I know this channel is a safe place.
After rolling credits last night, I can say that my first foray into a 2D Metroid game was thoroughly enjoyable. Movement is fast and fluid, making for great fun as you slide under crevices, wall jump to higher areas and run for your life while being chased by an E.M.M.I. I do wish the double jump worked without needing to be moving left or right, though. There were more than a few times where I did a tuck roll instead because I wasn't pushing the left stick far enough left or right when trying to dodge an enemy or attack. But that is a minor complaint.
While I sometimes got frustrated by getting lost, eventually realized that there was always a way out of an area if I looked thoroughly enough, and that helped me to enjoy the process of stumbling through the map over and over (The crisp, well detailed visuals didn't hurt, either). Plus, by the end of the game, it was quite fun to be powerful enough to shred through enemies with ease while trying to collect all the items.
Overall, I ended the game feeling like my $60USD was well spent. Now I want more 2D Metroid.
Been waiting for your review! Thanks!
Hope you get over the flu quickly and feel better soon. Thanks for the review, definitely will pick up soon. I was waiting to find a special edition but just going to give up lol
Yeah, they sold out pretty quickly! Glen
Ive been following this channel before it had more than 1k and i want you to know im proud of the hard work and content this channel has had and keeps having💪🏽
Very much appreciated mate. Thank you. Glen
I beat it yesterday, and I have to say I agree completely with this review. It really was an amazing game. I managed to get all but 4 of the upgrades, because some of those speed block puzzles were too much for my skills haha. But it was well worth the money for the special edition for me. I’m looking to start hard mode soon
The speed block puzzles are a beast. It’s definitely the hardest skill to master considering it requires the most button dexterity.
Finally :) Been waiting for your review!
Preordered the game and when it came online Thursday 9pm Pacific time even while trying to concentrate on my online d&d game it kept pulling me away. Been playing it all weekend it's my first playthrough and I am deeply enjoying it
Hope you feel better soon man 👍
This game is incredible, I didn't played too much of metroid since now, so didn't expect too much and it has been one of the best video games I have ever played. Game of the year by far for me
Hope you feel better...I come to you when I need a review on a game I am looking at.
Loving so much about the game, my first Metroid since finishing Fusion back on the GBA, but man… I am TERRIBLE at it. 😅 Those EMMI zones have my stress levels up to the max.
I hope you feel better! You sound so sick! Great review as usual
Cheers mate! Glen
I made the mistake of starting to play when I was already in an irritable mood. I didn’t have the patience for EMMI encounters eventually so I put it down until I get the switch OLED, delayed as Walmart seem to have f’d up preorders. I’m not frustrated about that at all :)
Seems like a great game, just not one to play when already in a frustrated mood.
That's why I picked up super Mario 3d world at the same time, so when I get stuck or frustrated I just throw in some chill ass mario 😆
Been waiting for this one to get posted. Great job as always gentlemen.
I was expecting this review, and it gave me the confirmation I needed without spoiling too much. Thanks!
Hope you get to feeling better!
The precision offered by the joystick wouldn't have been possible with a d-pad
Still, there could be se customization for controls. Impossible to play in some controls such a GameCube controller. Who would play a game with a GC switch controller?? Well... Unfortunately it's the only control I've got :(
@@oscaralbertococanodiaz2135 Have you forgotten about the fact that you can remap the Switch buttons in the Switch's settings?
@@qinn1996 woa!! Didn't know this!!
Samus is my favorite video game character. I was so excited that I was able to buy the special edition and Amiibo pack when it came out to go along with my new OLED switch.
Loved me some Metroid since I was about 6 years old. I'm 35 now and I feel like that wee man getting lost on Zebes all over again. 10/10 game.
Thanks for the review. I already picked the game up and am throughly enjoying it. Glad to see it is getting its due. Excellentlly crafted experience regardless of how long it takes you to beat it. Cheers!
I always enjoy your guys reviews.. already bought the game but wanted to watch anyway haha
Haven’t played it yet but the 2D metroids are my favourite amd can’t wait to play this. Thanks for the review guys
The audio is what always hooked me in Metroid games, so very creepy and unique. Great review!
I love the Alien 3 reference! Loved that game on SNES
Yeah, that was a great game! Glen
Thanks! Excellent review! Get well soon.
Thanks for the review Glen. Sorry your not feeling well. Get well soon.
Just beat it last night, physical pick up for sure. Took my time & loved every second. 10/10 GOTY. As a long time Metroid fan, I'm so glad it lives up to the name!
I'm not wild about the soundtrack or the AI explaining literally everything
Everything else is excellent
Felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities with sound design, like when the EMMI gets you, it doesn't sound quite as "dreadful" as it should. Also some weird music in the intro sequence, totally out of place. And the AI voice is quite annoying. Most sound and ALL gameplay/puzzles/exploration is awesome, just my nitpicks
The music in the intro is the theme from Super Metroid, it is a series' classic, but I agree with you on the sound desing and ost in general, to me it is the only thing it really lacked with the bgm being too much anonymous compared to some of the bangers the previous games had. The AI however is fine, in Fusion there was an identical system to Dread's, with the dedicated AI rooms but in Fusion it would literally tell you where to go and unlock the way to that sector, in Dread I found it to be a less intrusive nice middleground
@@Esenin472 sure, it's preferable to fusion
But it would be even better if he wasn't in the game at all.
@@lNllClK I liked adams voice, just not his role
And yeah, I wished they a few more sound cues for the emmis, and leveraged the lighting a bit better. But like you said, nitpicks at most
Hope you get better man
I'm on the final boss. It has been such an amazing gameplay experience. No handholding. Just pure metroidvania. Shinesparks, infinite bomb jumping, sequence breaking, all present and correct. It is a masterpiece. The game expects you to learn and get better. I love it.
The rush you get from trying to escape the EMMI is worth it by itself. 🏃🏼♀️😅💯
Its a fair score your giving. I sometimes make my own score based reviews before I watch your videos and my score was a bit higher. Maybe its the nostalgia but what a game!
Yeah it really is great!
@@SwitchUpYt I think its just side by side with Super Metroid to answer the topic question
Hope you get well soon man, thanks for the awesome review... My only qualm with picking up this game immediately is the fact that I haven't played any previous games... And Nintendo ISN'T MAKING IT EASY.
In any case, thanks again
Cheers mate. Yeah, the story recaps previous events so you could get by without playing the others. Would be nice to have them available though! Glen
Watched plenty of reviews for this game but… it was yours I was waiting for. Thanks mates!
Cheers mate!
I would say, out of all 7 mainline titles (including remakes), Dread sits at a very solid 3rd place for me.
I know that might seem low, but keep in mind that we're talking about _Metroid_ here. Even the worst games are still fantastic games. And when the only two titles beating you are the masterpieces Super and Zero Mission...yeah, 3rd place is phenomenal. Well worth the wait.
5:00 I'm not used to using an analog stick to move a character in 2D, either, But they made Samus control like butter in this game, and that's a good thing. Also, you kind of need the analog stick for 360 aiming.
Great review. Thank you!
Thanks for this Glen, get well soon. Always great to get your opinions on games :)
Also glad Nintendo are starting to send you review codes 😎
Thank you mate! Glen
I'm with Glenn on the controls thing, so many times where I felt like I couldn't nail something down with the joystick but feel like I could've nailed it with the D-Pad
Looks great. Thanks for the review and get well soon ❤
Cheers Siobhan. Glen
Get well soon Glen! Don't make him work too hard, Mark!
This looks solid, glad to finally see another 2D Metroid game.
I’ll definitely get this one down the line. Thanks for the video!
Glen you sound rough, but that was another great Switchup review. This game looks so sleek, and I can't wait to pick it up. Metroid on the NES is the first Nintendo game I ever owned and it took me 4 months of delivering newspapers and saving money just so I could afford to buy my very first NES game. I fell in love with it and the style of gameplay. I can't wait to save up enough for this one. Like you, I prefer the d-pad for controlling 2d games. Still, this looks intuitive enough to feel good even when playing with the analog stick. Great review though Glen! Keep up the great work and hope you're feeling better very soon!
Cheers mate, much appreciated. Glen
After playing all the previous 2D Metroid games I played the first few minutes of Dread and how amazingly it plays was just awesome.
Using the stick wasn't as comfortable as the Dpad, but the smooth movement, responsive feeling, etc. were great.
This is gonna be my first venture into metroid universe
Feel better Glen!
Great review guess I’m still on the fence, but this has me thinking again about it.
Your review was very thorough. Loved it.
Thanks mate
Thanks for the wonderful review! I really enjoyed this game, probably my favorite 2D Metroid since Super Metroid. Btw I hope you feel better! Stay hydrated and get lots of rest.
Just beat it today and im going in for a hard mode %100 run. It's fantastic.
I've had the flu as well! My baby was supposed to arrive on Monday, then Yesterday and now been moved to Friday, I'm so glad because I didn't fancy looking after a new born with the flu.
Get well soon 👍
I hope Mercury Stream uses this same game engine and gives us one more Metroid before the Switch's life-cycle is up.
I'm right before the final boss fight as this review comes out. will watch the full video later, but as someone who loves the lore of metroid and would put metroidvanias at his favorite genre, this has been a true, addictive pleasure for me. i could barely put it down, and it was well worth the full 60euros for me. The combat and controls are tight, responsive, satisfying, but i feel there's something Metroid Dread does best even among the greatest metroidvanias: exploration. the maps are all an intricate puzzle that starts out with a feeling of linearity, but thanks to the myriad of upgrades that the game has available (and somehow most of them feel satisfying and unique to use), they open up more and more, and it all falls in place like an elaborate puzzle depicting a work of art, and each time you put a piece in a place you couldnt before, it conveys a feeling of earned power that i find is rare.
10/10 for me, could probably drone on about it for hours.
I picked this up launch day. It’s such a great game and I am playing it again but this time on hard mode.
This game with a Dpad would’ve been awful with this game considering how buttery smooth Samus handles and the controls are a sublime experience.
Completely agree, the game was absolutely designed with the stick in mind. Not only is the d pad mapped to specific actions, but the free aim is only possible through the stick. This is not a fair point of criticism from this review. If the reviewer is going to criticize not being able to switch to the d pad, then it’s necessary to come up with an alternative for how free aim would work.
The problem is the slipperiness he mentioned. if you're off by even a little bit when pressing up or down, Samus moves left or right in a hurry. Getting used to planting yourself to aim is essential.
Great video! I have all of the metroid games from previous consoles. Big fan of the series. One question though....where is the morph ball in this game? Does it exist? It's hard to imagine Metroid without the good ol' morph ball.
Yeah, you acquire it at a certain point.
@@SwitchUpYt Great! Thanks for the response.
Got 1 emmi left, I really hope for a cool area that I haven't discovered yet, hot/cold areas, def spices up the rooms to have extreme temperatures, I wish other metrovanias used extreme temperatures to spice up areas and rooms....
This game is simply amazing and definitely moved to the top of my Switch favorite game (maybe all time favorite top 10?!)
If it's even half as good as Samus Returns, this is a must-buy!
I Love the fact that the price is also part of the review if its too high or worthy 👍👍👍it s big help💪
My copy finally arrived today, loving it :)
Yeah, it's great. Nostalgia is stopping it from usurping Super Metroid at the top of my rankings but it could easily take top spot otherwise. Glen
👍
Playing this right for my bday today. This game is awesome
I've been playing since launch on short bursts due to work and I'm enjoying myself immensely! I've been so hyped since the announcement and I'm not disappointed at all, and this is with me being absolute trash at these kinds of games. The game is kicking my butt but I'm loving every part of it. Great review Glen, and hope you feel much better very soon!
I've seen it noted that the reason that there's no d-pad support for movement is probably because it'd have been difficult to support free aim while moving without making it a completely different game by using the right stick for aim.
Which some people would have no doubt preferred but being dyspraxic I find twin-stick shooters and that next to impossible so I'm glad they didn't.
