They sound similar in this case, but there are much more overtones with the clear. They also have a brighter sound and and longer sustain of the overtones. Whereas the coated muffles those overtones and highlights the lower tones, hence creating a deeper and warmer sustain. I think the sound depends a lot on the tuning as well. I believe it's possible to tune the coated heads lower than the clear. The video shows only one tuning, while tuning range of the heads are different. This means there are two sets of drum heads and two sets of opportunities to create different sounds.
Been using coated Emperors for 10 years now and no plans to change any time soon! I generally prefer coated tom heads because the attack sounds less plastic-y to me and more organic.

I was just about to replace my clear heads on my toms with coated heads (after 35 years of using clear heads on toms), and after seeing your video, I realise that it doesn't really make much difference, so I probably won't bother. It was especially useful the way you played the exact same 16th note pattern around the kit and segued from coated to clear heads, so the comparison was really clear.
I found the coated didn’t produce any snare rattle. That is the type of drum head for me, especially on smaller drum kits. My Sonor Martini loves them.
May i know if youre using evans coated or remo coated? Im using remo ambassador coated and still can subtly hear the snare rattle (sanre is medium tuned) when i hit the rack toms
@@kamalhazim3890 I use g2 coated Evans on the tom and batter bass drum. I have a coated Remo ambassador as it was the only option at my local. It does the job just I am still fighting with the snare it a bit for the sound I want.
The clear sound very open with some top end. The coated sounds more as someone else said here; "organic." I'll say organic too. The coated has a more percussive sound. Which is weird for me to say that. During the mid to late 1970s I was a fan of dot clear heads and during the '80s double ply pinstripe clear was what I was into. I think my taste have changed where I like the coated heads now. They just have a very natural sound to them.
I'm building a miniature drum set for my Masters of the Universe figures and trying to decide whether to make the drum heads clear or white. I think clear looks better so since sound isn't an issue, I'm leaning that direction. Thanks for the video!
Yep, you can't go wrong with Turkish made cymbals. The're awesome and much more affordable than hi end Zildjian/Paiste/Sabian/Meinl - at least here in Europe

I now have the G2 Clear on the toms, on a Tama Starclassic Performer maple/birch kit. Sounds very crisp. I always had G1 Coated. That sounds a bit warmer. I like both.
I use Evans Level 360 Hydraulic heads clear Red, and lately I have found that Evans EC2 batter clear and EC reso clear work really well also. I use the EC Rev Dot on my snare. Evans heads sound really great. I have a Pearl Decade Maple kit with 6 Toms 8, 10, 12, 13 rack toms and 14 and 16 floor toms. Pearl Masters Maple snare and Decade Maple 24" bass. I like the clear heads on my toms so the stage lights shine through them. Looks really cool.
As a live engineer I've always found coated slightly easier to mix for. Those bright overtones that drummers like in their garages are a pain in the arse live. There are much more important sounds that need to be in those frequencies. I find coated toms tend to go 'Bwump' which I like, while clear seem to go 'Bawumpohh' which I don't like. I have no actual evidence to back this up however.
This is exactly it, best description (as an ex soundy) Coated has all the stuffs you need for a good live mix, less boinging tack than the clears. Just the low end is a little rounder with clears but we are never without an eq to make up for that lol
Maybe I'm the only one who does this or prefers this way but for live performance I like clears and use the coated heads for studio/small rooms and recordings.
I am actually switching from coated to clear. I have played coated for more than 20 years. But after watching this video I think I will give clear a chance just for an aesthetic’s point to view
In one band im in i use coated heads we play some harder songs but its all with a funky, psychedelic vibe to it so coated give me the warmth im looking for. I use the same kit in my metal band one up one down just a simple 3 peice. I tuned it higher and it made a night and day difference in how i cut through for metal. Im looking for w clearer more lively sound for my metal band i have some clear emps im going to try when my coated ones get too battered. I never broke through heads but i notice i am more now that im playing harder, faster music.
I like the clear coated Remo because it has more of a jazzier sound to the times I feel that the clear has town but it has a lot of attack and more Thud to the clears but I use white skins
Coated are definitely drier. You can hear the snare buzz from the 10" with the clears on. I mix between coated and clear. Usually coated on my 10 and 12 and clears on 14 and 16 floors. The floors are heavy clears....I like a fat and punchy heavy attack floor. Plus I mic everything so I can dial in front of house. I want to feel and hear something with my hands when I play that might be slightly different from out front.
I think coated heads are more aesthetically pleasing for me. Personally. But also clear heads got more beef. Coated heads I feel have a sandy attack and shorter ring while clears are more direct and ring out longer. Therefore imo coated is best for jazz or experimental intimate settings, or if you use brushes, whereas clear heads ring out more and are beefy and sound best tuned lowered. I been using coated mostly for funk and jazz but might switch to clears for rock and r&b. Keeping a coated one of the snare tho cause I want the option to use brushes. Also I prefer coated on a 13" tom idk why lol
I play a Gretsch USA Custom kit with a 13” rack and 16” floor tom. I prefer the look of non-coated heads and keep trying every head combination that comes out. But, I keep going back to Evans G2 Coated on the tops and G1 Coated on the bottoms for the sound.
Totally, it's cool to see the woods inside. Although I like the overall aesthetic of coated more. Gonna change the clear G2s my Starclassics came with to coated Emp when the time comes. Cheers!

I switch back and forth a lot. For years my main head choices were Remo clear Emperor or PinStripe. But I'd occasionally use coated or clear Ambasaador, or clear C.S., and even the rare Fiberskyn. Today I have Aquarian Power Dot on my live rig and Texture Coated Super 2 on my practice kit. I really like the aquarian, but they're just a little too dark for my tase - probably because Im used to the brightness of Remo heads. I would like tobkeep trying, but part of me wants tobgo back to Remo - but I also want to try Evans again. Evans seems to sonically bridge the gap between the brightness of Remo and the darkness or Aquarian. Plus, the manufacturing and attenion to detail are unmatched with Evans. I used to only use Evans through my high school years (91-95), and withbmy old band from those days starting to play more it would be fun to see that name on my drums again for that band. The G2 has always been a great sounding head, but it's the EC2 that really has my attention. Evans is the first to measure the amount of dampning proportionally on a two ply head. I love that. I wish more companies were as detail oriented. It's those details that make for a very nice sounding head - at least from what I hear here. Who knows I might hate them on my drums.
I’m really new to drums, i have an entry level peal roadshow with stock pearl heads, i want to upgrade. When upgrading the heads, do we change the batter only or even the bottom? It’s gonna cost alot if i change the bottom as well but if i don’t, i don’t know if that wouldn’t maximize the quality of new batter head? Please help. Thanks!
Hey Rodney! Upgrading the batter heads alone will be a huge upgrade, then replace the reso head (bottom head) when funds allow, no need to do them at the same time 🙂

@@RodneyEvangelio To me, clear and coated sound pretty different, but one doesn't sound better. Maybe one type sounds better to you, maybe not. In the future when you have funds and need to replace your heads again, the bottom head doesn't need to be changed anywhere near as often as the top head. So you might change the top head 3-4 times before changing the bottom head might be beneficial. Also, be sure to check out some videos on tuning the the different drums, The difference between even an okay tuned drum and a very well tuned drum is night and day.
Coated heads shave off the top and bottom of the frequency spectrum. The denser the music you play, or the faster you play, the more you will want clear heads… that plastic-y attack helps the hits cut through. If you’re playing something vibey and slower, coated heads are a better choice because that plastic-y attack tends to sound weird in more sparse arrangements.
Great video. I have been using coated G2's on my toms (Fibes Austin-era kit) for years. Recently tried clear G2's on my 10" & 12" (and clear EC2 on 15" floor). Findings': I really dug the tone of going back to clear heads again! HOWEVER, I was simply (and unfortunately) amazed at the lack of durability in the clears!! I mean, they pitted substantially (almost immediately during) after one gig! I played them for a second gig and switched back to coated, whose durability I have (always) been most impressed with. Do you (two) have any input as to your experience(s) with the difference(s) in durability re: coated vs. clear???
Why do we have to have guitars in the background at the beginning of the video? I use G2 clears on all of my kits. Bought a new DW kit last year and re-headed the Remos they came with with G2s. I too like to see the inside of the shells whilst I'm playing!
How come nobody talks about the difference the sound makes when the tip of the drum stick rubs a coating vs smooth plastic at impact? Would think the sound would vary no matter how microscopic.
tha bad thing about Coated heads is in tha long run, when they fade away, it'll sound way worse than clear, also coted heads are harder to keep clean! it's why i stuck with G2 clears especially when they age they age alot better than coated
Great Video guys...but I am a bit confused now...I just got a brand new Pearl Export 20" 10" 12" 14" 14" Kit and only the Snare is coated...the rest is clear... Now, should i get the rest of the Heads coated or have my Head (Brains) cleared...???...
The warmth is gone man, If you want a more synthetic sound go with the clear. If you want that warmth go with coated. Its not really a Win/Loose type of thing. Apples to oranges.
I'm really thankful you guys made this video, but you could definitely do another video on the same topic and dig in to the tuning differences! Pretty much everything (tonally) is "subtle" from a drum perspective, so digging into the finer details really helps paint a better picture
Hey Guys, What is the difference in the G2s Clear and G2 SST clear. I installed the latter on my cheapo Gammon 12 , 13 and 16 Toms, and I notice that there is an oil in between the plys. I guess that serves as a tonal adjustment . I do see that the Oil does Meander around the head from the double ring on the perimeter of the heads.... I should have ordered the G2s Clear w/o the SST designation. What are the Reso heads you used in this test? THX for the Informative Video
You mean G2 vs EC2. G2 never had the SST. Also there is no oil in between the plies. What you are seeing are Newton's rings. Light is refracted differently due to miliscule differences in distance between the plies.
Depends on the application-I use coated for jazz and funk…and clears for rock/pop and Latin…if I only had the one kit…I’d stick with clear…if only because they “sing” more…tuned just shy of tight they no have a nice, musical sustain…at least to me…I hate dull, thuddy drums.
Impact? Do they break or are you saying they dont cut through volume wise? I'm a rock drummer that likes to play a lot louder than a lot of other rock drummers I like to cut through. I've been using clear heads and they do pretty good but I want to control the tone and warm up the sound bit more by using coated heads. But I dont want to sacrifice attack. Any tips?
Clear heads any day over coated! I cannot exactly articulate what I hear in them but just know they are the shit! Especially how they present FOH. Hard Rock or Metal? Clear IMO!
Coated or clear? Most of ya knuckles (drummers) can‘t play in time with pocket anyway. Learn this and then talk about drumheads. (Best regards, your bassplayer)

Which Evans 360 do you use? 360 are nearly all heads, because that is the name for the collar production. G1, G12, G14 or G2?

I like the Remo coded emperors on my Ludwig drum kit. I think they have a more warmer open sound of the drums and the clear heads. That's just me

The snare will 99% of the time always come as coated even if the toms are clear. So your not going mad. Enjoy your new kit

Pin stripe Evans. I like the deep punchy sound. I think the clear is nice, coated not sure..

The warmth is gone man, If you want a more synthetic sound go with the clear. If you want that warmth go with coated. Its not really a Win/Loose type of thing. Apples to oranges.
I'm really thankful you guys made this video, but you could definitely do another video on the same topic and dig in to the tuning differences! Pretty much everything (tonally) is "subtle" from a drum perspective, so digging into the finer details really helps paint a better picture

If you are playing rock which a great majority of drummers start with than clear heads are definitely the way to go.
Hey Guys, What is the difference in the G2s Clear and G2 SST clear. I installed the latter on my cheapo Gammon 12 , 13 and 16 Toms, and I notice that there is an oil in between the plys. I guess that serves as a tonal adjustment . I do see that the Oil does Meander around the head from the double ring on the perimeter of the heads.... I should have ordered the G2s Clear w/o the SST designation. What are the Reso heads you used in this test? THX for the Informative Video
You mean G2 vs EC2. G2 never had the SST. Also there is no oil in between the plies. What you are seeing are Newton's rings. Light is refracted differently due to miliscule differences in distance between the plies.

Depends on the application-I use coated for jazz and funk…and clears for rock/pop and Latin…if I only had the one kit…I’d stick with clear…if only because they “sing” more…tuned just shy of tight they no have a nice, musical sustain…at least to me…I hate dull, thuddy drums.
There is a clear difference coated heads take a lot of the over tone out and tune easyer

A metal player here, clear heads are my poison. Coated just doesn’t cut it for me as far as impact goes.
Yeah, clear g2 on toms tuned low + emad 2 on the kick + genera dry on the snare = \m/
Impact? Do they break or are you saying they dont cut through volume wise? I'm a rock drummer that likes to play a lot louder than a lot of other rock drummers I like to cut through. I've been using clear heads and they do pretty good but I want to control the tone and warm up the sound bit more by using coated heads. But I dont want to sacrifice attack. Any tips?
More attack in clear...and more sensitive , in 10 inch tom sounds the snarewires....

Clear heads any day over coated! I cannot exactly articulate what I hear in them but just know they are the shit! Especially how they present FOH. Hard Rock or Metal? Clear IMO!
That snare gets in the way on every single tom, maybe try turning off the wires next time

what mics are you using?
Sennheiser E904 mics on the toms and a pair of AKG C414 as overheads 🙂
