It's the inflated cost of housing. That leaves only the very rich and the very poor. Working people can't afford to live there. Like every major city in this country. Happening in Tampa area now.

Agreed, when I had my apartment in Largo in 2013 it was 560. I was making about 12 an hour and it was doable, with the help of the food pantries run by the local ministries. When I left the rent had gone up to 800 a month, I was barely making it. I moved away and got a better job. I checked just to see how expensive my old apartment was; 1200 and some change. Which is the same price my mortgage is in Maryland. A 580 square foot apartment is 1200? And it wasn't even super fancy by any means. They were old maybe built in the 70s or 60s. Had a 'lake' but there were ducks who shit everywhere and everything and while I never felt unsafe in that area it wasn't that upscale. I can't imagine any thing larger for a family.. people just can't afford to live there and there aren't enough good paying jobs.. and with nothing to do it turned into a cesspool.
It was also kinda scary how willingly doctors gave out drugs for any reason. It was stupid easy for me to get pain meds - the good shit - easier than it was to find a good or at the very least queer-friendly therapist. I mean, I didn't abuse the pain meds because I hate the way they make me feel. But it was scary when the doc just wrote off 30 count rx's over and over. I had an alarming amount when recovering from a foot injury.. but holy hell was it hard af to find a GOOD therapist or any kind of psych that would help me with my adhd/ocd and other issues that I just didn't wanna put a bandaid on with medication or retail therapy.

Honestly, I have never heard anyone say Fort Myers was nice. I think a couple of years ago it was on the right track but it's always been a bit seedy and full of poverty. Now that the people with money have fled we can all see it for what it really is. Florida has a MASSIVE drug problem including alcohol, some of the worst in the country. Add that to poverty, a poor job market, hurricanes and constant heat....you have Fort Myers.

It comes in cycles. Before 2008 all cities and towns were looking nice then hurricane Charley hit the area and then things started to go down hill. History repeats with Hurricane Ian and soon we will slip into recession if not depression once again. Sure there is a building boom after a hurricane hits but usually seems to be followed by a greater national sentiment.

Welcome to the signs of the times. I've lived in Fort Myers for forty years and believe it or not it is better in many ways. Sure some areas look more run down than others but we had help from Hurricanes Charley, Wilma, Irma and Ian. The entire country has a lot of the same problems Ft.Myers has ,and they haven't had Hurricanes. The new Babylon is slowly falling, and that's as simple as I can explain what's happening to not only Ft.Myers, but the whole country. It's no where near as bad as you make it seems. We have been in a recession for a couple of years already, and the hurricane certainly didn't help.

That is insane, what the hell. Ft Myers seemed like such a chill pretty place- I had family (non-blood) down there who moved from Baltimore (we all did. I moved back. Like. I moved back.. lol which speaks for itself.) It's so bizarre to see this because you know, where I'm from- what I'm used to seeing and knowing how to avoid it... what I saw was the norm up here. Only to see it happen down there where it was supposed to be safe!
I dunno if Largo/Clearwater changed at all since I've been gone besides the prices. I mean I know FL always has had a homeless problem (I think unhoused is the newer term but *shrugs*.) I mean, I knew that when I was visited as a kid in 2000 and in college in 2004. I mean, yeah there was a sketchy part of where I went to college at Ringling in Sarasota... but I never imagined it would be this wide spread. I know I'm rambling here, lol. I'm just glad I got the hell out of there in 2017.
I know one major problem is that there weren't a whole lot of good paying jobs outside of retail or some kind of trade (which you'd have to go to school for- and people couldn't afford going to school and working at the same time.
*I left FL for many reasons. People from the west side of the city ask why did I leave and.. dude, I don't think they'd get it. And this crime going up just adds to it. I'm trans/queer.. like real shit I just look like a late 90s grunge band front man now.. and seeing all the crazy anti-glbt laws on TOP of the Baltimore-like crime.. dude I'll pass. But I returned for family, and I couldn't handle the heat. And after all these vids I'm kinda.. better off in Maryland.. I mean sure I gotta play it street smart back at least I wouldn't have to deal with the political drama.

I think what made Ft Myers go to the dump is the same thing that is causing Collier County to do the same: Drug addicts, severely mentally ill becoming homeless due to lack of health care for them, inflation/housing market booms cutthroat market and lack of funding for programs for mental health services and lack of job opportunity. This whole country is going to crap. I just took a 2-week road trip from New Jersey through PA, WV, Virginia, the Carolinas, Mississippi, the panhandle, and down to Naples and this whole country is all starting to look the same sadly.

With de Sanctimonious in the governor's office , you can expect more socio/economic/political quagmires all over Florida. He is too busy illegally spending Florida's economic coffers on expensive, top dollar flights shipping migrants to places like Martha's Vineyard in Mass. I've been watching videos showing the run down spots in Florida all day. Florida has an unaddressed, massive drug/alcohol as well as an abundance of crime & homelessness. I don't think that anyone in their right mind would ever think that De Sanctimonious & Co. are the least bit concerned with these social inequalities affecting the entire Florida community. There will be more problematic Fort Myers - type communities springing up all over the Sunshine State as time progresses.

And everywhere else houses have gone up 3x at least and so has rent. Don’t move to Florida unless you have skills. Jobs are everywhere but you need to know it’s not cheap to live here anymore. You won’t make it on your own at even $20/hour, you will need roommates. Until the beach is rebuilt in 2 years, tourism is going to be down, which is the lifeblood of this area. After 2025, Fort Myers is going to be huge for tourists again. Bigger than ever!

Florida is a keystone State, but it does get concerning with the damage you see and recovery rates. We can look at Louisiana, New Orleans, there are major major problems with infrastructure there and it's uncertain the future there. The amount of money that is needed there to even begin to repair and rebuild the roads and sidewalks there alone... they just don't have the revenue to do it properly. It would cost a fortune, and it's in rough shape.

Getting harder now as property insurance premiums keep rising to unprecedented levels mostly due to the two things that contribute to this. 2 major things happened that I can remember. 1. Oxyxontin did a number on the people, and the clinics/ pill mills changed the landscape economically and socially and for 2. Its never been the same since the recession/ credit crash back in 2009-2010. These and the old retired people who used to make up the biggest part of the population died off and the "original" florida homes went out of fashion and became rentals which are neglected. That and the population boom.

I SEE A PATTERN! You and your wife travel to different towns, outside of yours and criticize them; usually showing the worst part of town and provide a subjective viewpoint (always negative). EVERY TOWN/ CITY has a blighted areas…unfortunately some more than others. WHAT HAPPENED TO FT MYERS? A category 5 ripped through this coastal town in September 2022 and destroyed half of it. It is still recovering and has a ways to go in rebuilding, but they are doing it! You filmed a small portion in Ft Myers, probably anyone that sees your video and doesn’t know FM like I do will believe that FM is as blighted as you portray it. Well…. It’s not! You also ripped apart Miami. Has it changed since 2007? Yes…. Extremely. Actually Miami is unrecognizable compared to what it was in 2007. But Miami is a growing, vibrant city where the MINORITY IS THE MAJORITY! And its awesome to see a city built by the blood and sweat of many migrants - they have turned their dreams into what Miami is today. It is not perfect, but it is thriving. You know this very well because I believe you stated you were originally from Miami.

This is a bad take on the reasoning why it's like this, and everything you are showing is the north side which was not the best places for pretty much the past 30 years. It's inland and old, anytime a place gets dates the income level goes down down down. I remember since the time of Hurricane Andrew shysters coming down trying to get work uninsured and fly by night then jacking there prices up after quoting. A lot of elderly to take advantage of....
