Elementary - Some vs. Any

- In today's elementary-level video, we are focusing on SOME and ANY.
In order to fully understand when to use which, we first have to understand the difference between countable and uncountable nouns (and what nouns are in general).
Just follow the instructions and pause the video when you see the green PAUSE button so you can try to solve the task at hand on your own.
Notice that I talk very slowly in this video, so beginners will be able to understand me. The talking speed goes up with every level.

Hello Darren!
Is bread uncountable ?
YES, IT IS, UNLESS YOU USE A LOAF OF BREAD. IN THAT CASE , BREAD IS COUNTABLE ( TWO LOAFS OF BREAD )
Love you❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

This doesn't seem correct. You can say "do you want some milk?" do you want some of these? You can use some in question sentences.
@davrobloxplayYT cool This video is actually wrong. Let me tell you the real difference. If you say 'some', you know that there is. For example, you know that bartender has drinks. Because of this, you use 'some' instead of 'any' and ask, do you have something to drink? If your friend is a really lonely person and you 'assume' he has no friend, you use 'any' and say do you have any friends?
@@JoonKimDMD You are wrong. We should speak proper and grammatically correct English. Your question about milk is in such an informal setting. It should be : “Would you like a glass of milk?” “Would you like any of these?” ... Informal English is when we are conversing with friends/families coz we are not native speakers. In my part of the world, Singlish is the norm and grammar rulers are thrown out of the windows. And where in the world do you walk in a bar and ask a bartender for “some drinks”?? You order your drink! Ah.. Chocolate Velvet Martini please! ( Hope covid lockdown ends soon!) Cheers 🍻
@@balques1906 Do you know the difference betweeen "is someone there?" and "is anyone there?" You use someone if you assume there is a person. You use anyone if you assume there is a very low chance that a person exists. If you hear a noise, you would use someone. If you are on an isolated island, you would use anyone. I gave you an example of some drink at a bar just to let you know that 'some' assumes the high chance of having a drink. You don't say "do you have anything to drink?". Here is another example. If I ask you, "do you have any friends?" that means I assume you are a very lonely guy with no friends. If I ask you, "do you have some friends?" that means I assume you have friends. "Do you have any idea what you are talking about?" means I assume you got no idea because 'any' is used when I assume you have none.
@@JoonKimDMD again you are wrong. You are trying to justify something that is grammatically wrong. When someone ask you “do you have any friends?” , you can answer them : I have two friends OR I do not have any friends OR I do have some friends. The question does not ask you to assume anything. That is a grammar rule. We are talking about countable and uncountable plural nouns here. I am thinking that it is the kindness of your heart that you are making assumptions to the answers of the questions and or the phrasing of your questions. You do not question a grammar rule. Full-stop. “Any” is a Negative Polarity Item and that is why YOU try to avoid it but the rule is : you use any in a question. So according to the grammar rule : “Is anyone there?” And “Do you have any idea what you are talking about” is actually correct. Nothing to do with assumptions... specifically YOUR assumptions :)
@@balques1906 I am sorry, but you are wrong. "Is someone there?" is a question and it's grammatically correct. It definitely has everything to do with YOUR assumptions.
I just googled just for you and even other websites support my claims. forum.wordreference.com/threads/is-anyone-someone-in-there.2856794/
"Is anyone there?" (Neutral, or expecting no answer.)
"Is someone there?" (Strongly expecting a positive answer.)
That's because 'anyone' assume that there is no one (for example, on an isolated island). 'someone' is used if you are a police, a killer hides in a house and accidentally makes a noise. The police would say "is someone there!!! come out!".
czcams.com/video/8w3FO5pTokY/video.html
here is a youtube video that also supports my claim. Please watch this. Now who is wrong? :)
Good explanation
thank you:)
