When to use "some" and "any" | English grammar lesson

- Learn when to use the words "some" and "any" in the English language with this grammar lesson.
We use "some" in three specific situations:
1)In positive affirmative sentences with countable nouns in the plural and with uncountable nouns. Example "There are some apples" and "there is some rice."
2)In questions asking to receive something for example: "Can I have some apples?" or "Can I have some rice?"
3)We use "some" in questions offering something to someone like "Would you like some apples?"
We use the word "any" in two situations:
1) In normal questions for countable plural nouns and uncountable nouns, like for example "Do you have any apples?" and "Do you have any rice?"
2) We can also use "any" in negative statements: "I don't want any apples" and "I don't have any rice."

Rule 1 - We use "some" in positive sentences with:

- uncountable nouns always in the singular;
Rule 2 - We use "some" in questions asking for something:

We use both "a few" and "some" to indicate a plural but there is a slight difference in meaning:
1) There are a few apples. -> ""a few" = a small quantity (but more than 1 ) A few would be 2, 3 or 4 apples, for example
2) There are some apples. -> "some" = a normal plural (more than 1) Some could be 3, 100 or 10,000 apples, for example.

1) "There are some radishes and some lettuce" --> Correct
"There are some eggs" --> Correct
"There is some chees" --> Correct (but "cheese" is the correct spelling)
"And I'll make a delicious healthy salad :)" --> The salad sounds good!
2) "There isn't any sausge" --> It depends! If the sausages are small individual sized sausages, small enough for one person to eat, then "sausage" is countable and we say "There aren't any sausages." But if the sausage is a very big sausage that you cut into several portions for several people (like cheese), then sausage is uncountable and we say "There isn't any sausage."
"There aren't any tomatoes" --> Correct
"There isn't any butter" --> Correct
3)"Are there any cheery" --> (I think you mean "cherry"?) Cherry is a countable noun. So we must use the plural - "Are there any cherries?" or "Do you have any cherries?"
"Is there any pineapplle" --> In the context of a shop, pineapple is a countable noun because they sell lots of them. So we say "Are there any pineapples?" or even better "Do you have any pineapples?"
"Excuse me, I'm looking for red kichen curtains. Do you have any red curtains?/ Are there any red curtains?" --> Correct, very good :)

Hi Andrew, thank you for the youtube about "any". After watching the video, I am confused with this sentence: "we can get a book from any library in the state". Library is a countable noun. According to your youtube, it will be like "we can get a book from any libraries in the state." Can you explain why the any is followed by a countable singular noun(library)? Thank you.

But in order rule 1 using "any" in questions I have to say: "do you have any cheese? the meaning is the same in both sentences, why there is this difference? The meaning of "Can I have some cheese?" is not the same as "do you have any cheese?""Can I have some cheese?" - I am asking for somebody to give me some cheese.
"do you have any cheese?" - I am asking if they possess any cheese. I am not necessarily asking them to give me the cheese.
The basic rule for questions is if the question is to ask to receive or give something that is an uncountable noun, then we use "some". Otherwise, for "normal" questions concerning uncountable nouns, we use "any".
