MAMAMOO(in 2023) joined the ranks of Destiny's Child, The Spice Girls, and TLC as the ONLY girl groups to sell over 70,000 tickets on their FIRST tour in the USA.
This makes MAMAMOO the ONLY girl group to achieve this milestone AFTER a 21-year gap.
AND the ONLY Non-English speaking girl group to accomplish such a feat.
Proud to say I was one of those tickets, the Chicago show.

All the little names popping up in the MV are different famous celebrities that agreed to do cameos as if they were staff, Mamamoo’s CEO basically called in every favour he had to get as many eyes on their debut as possible.
Baek Ji-Young, the lady ranking them, is an extremely famous solo singer in Korea so the idea of not living up to her standards would have been terrifying. And the prank is fully legit, the girls were so anxious and the relief of knowing she thought they were really good was palpable.
And that’s Hwasa’s real hair, just a small ponytail out the back. The CEO told them to not cut their hair before debut, even now but especially at the time long hair was standard for girl groups, so Hwasa showing up with a pixie cut was a GIANT “don’t tell me what to do.” Fortunately the CEO loved it

Thanks for the comment. I think they did amazing in their video. Their light heartedness, and fun nature translated really well on screen and as newbies, that's so incredibly hard to do. Most look awkward, uncomfortable, etc, but these ladies are naturals. All of them.

They were so young! Just kids, really. As another commenter noted, Baek Ji Young--the prankster--is a solo singer. Not only, but she is a very respected 'senior' in the industry. Solar has said that the prank was real. Wow. On the bright side, Baek Ji Young has been known as a consistent supporter of Mamamoo through their struggles and ascendancy. It cannot be overstated how little support/resources they had from RBW during these early days. There is an early video of Mamamoo performing Mr. Ambiguous for an audience of enthusiastic young soldiers, in what looks like what we would call a 'USO show,' wearing the very same outfits as the MV. Absolutely adorable. By the way, I think the first 'live' video you reacted to was the first official 'promo' performance by the group. If so, there were supposedly only 3 non-staff attendees in the audience, Moonbyul's sisters and a friend. Hwasa told the story about her short hair cut for the Mr. Ambiguous MV during the group's 4 Seasons concert, which is available on dvd. She also gave her famous, "if I don't meet this generation's beauty standards..." speech during that concert. Supposedly, Hwasa's defiance on the short-hair directive was hardly unique, and she earned the nickname, 'My Way,' for the trait. Cheers

Solar tells some of the dancers in the behind the scenes video for Mamamoo+'s song "Dang, Dang" that they basically developed all their choreo themselves up to "Hip".
For a long time the reason was that they simply didn't have the money, I guess.
Gogobebe was choreographed by Mina Myoung. A lot of their early dances were choreographed by themselves though.
My ult girl group will always be 2NE1 but thankfully I found Mamamoo during 2NE1's forced hiatus in 2014 and their eventual disbandment in 2016. What I love about Mamamoo is they remind me so much of 2NE1, meaning they are genuine, humble, always sing live and are amazing performers. Hwasa and Wheein are also Blackjacks. During the competition show Queendom where both 2NE1's Park Bom and Mamamoo competed, Park Bom said Mamamoo reminds her of 2NE1. She also specifically asked Wheein to collab with her on her song 4:44. As expected, Mamamoo won Queendom, just like they win any competition they enter, either as a group or as soloists. Mamamoo are the undisputed vocal queens of kpop.

Think how many times they heard they wouldn't make it. Solar being rejected at 50 different auditions. Hwasa rejected because she didn't fit the Kpop beauty standards. It's actually amazing to me that both Solar and Wendy (Red Velvet), two of the best voices in Kpop, were both rejected. Even IU was rejected by 20 different companies - and I can't imagine Kpop without her.

Yes, Solar is the first singer in Mr Ambiguous. It is confusing that they showed Moonbyul instead of Solar in the MV.
The credits during the MV are all phony. Everyone listed is a celeb making a cameo as a favor to Kim Dohoon in order to bring some attention to the first single by the first group to debut under RBW. The "making of" concept for the MV helped set up the prank by Baek Ji Young, who is a very respected singer. I'm sure the girls were told all these famous people were there to support their debut and that their senior Baek Ji Young had kindly offered to give them tips and advice. I'm not a fan of the prank either but it was the first of a zillion Only Mamamoo moments.
Kim Dohoon is a well-known songwriter and a co-CEO of RBW. He's the one who formed Mamamoo and selected the members with the idea of promoting them as creative artists rather than teen idols. He wrote Mr Ambiguous for Quincy Jones and the girls performed it for Quincy when he was in Seoul for a concert while they were trainees and didn't have a name for their group yet. The song was originally called Mamamoo but when Quincy decided not to use it KDH re-titled it and the original song title became the group's name. As a tiny startup agency with a small staff, very little money, and no clout in the industry other than Kim Dohoon's rep as a songwriter RBW couldn't afford a choreographer or big promotional events to introduce MMM to the public so the girls did their own choreo and busked on the streets to promote themselves. They didn't have the advantages enjoyed by girl groups under the Big 3 agencies but that also means that right from the start they were involved in all creative aspects of their career from songwriting and choreo to styling and MV concepts. I think that DIY approach helped them develop quickly as artists and contributed to the authenticity they've always delivered in performance and on recordings.
The M Countdown video was their debut performance. Never noticed it before but this time I could hear a quiver of nervousness in Wheein's voice at the beginning. Of course they must have been nervous as hell but they soon found their groove and killed it. You didn't seem to notice that Solar dropped her mustache in the middle of the song and used her finger afterwards. Someone (Solar as I recall) smoothly kicked the mustache out of the way so nobody would slip on it during the remainder of the song.
Piano Man was their 2nd single. Gongchan is a member of B1A4.
Piano Man was the first MV I saw by MMM. At that time (2016) I had gotten interested in Korean culture via historical kdramas and films and decided it was time to see what the kids were up to musically. After a few bubblegum pop songs by the girls and wannabe hip hop by the boys I was ready to give up but then I stumbled across Piano Man and quickly fell head over heels in love with MMM. If not for Piano Man I would have missed out on the other amazing Korean artists I only found because Mamamoo made me think there must be more to kpop than my first impressions had led me to believe.
Yes, they should be global superstars based on their talent, the quality of their music and their amazing live performances and imo RBW is largely to blame that they're not but on the other hand if it wasn't for RBW Mamamoo wouldn't exist and there's a good chance that none of the members would have debuted with other labels. KDH plucked the members from the scrap heap of audition rejects and retreads from other companies. Nobody else in the music biz believed in them and at a pre-debut industry showcase everyone told KDH that Mamamoo would fail miserably and that he was crazy to present them as the first group under his new label.
Thanks for your comments and backstory. There is this authenticity that I feel from MMM that aligns with what you've said. They had to do pretty much everything themselves which means they had to create their own stage personas (as individuals and as a group), which is probably just an extension of who they really are. They do seem more personable/relatable for that reason.
I do get what you mean about being turned off, but what I've learned about Kpop so far is that there is really something for everyone. I'm starting to like Korean Indie Rock that I might want to introduce on my channel....at some point. There are some gems out there, you just gotta cut through the noise to find them.😊

@@tdragonreactions Exactly - Kpop is much more than kiddie pop. But to be fair I needed to open my mind and ears to appreciate what they were trying to do and as I adjusted I started to like some of the groups I had initially dismissed (BTS for example). I still only enjoy a small percentage of Korean pop music but the same goes for Western pop so that's just my personal taste. But thanks to Mamamoo I kept listening to kpop and along the way I also encountered a bunch of terrific Korean artists who aren't kpop idols such as indie singer-songwriters Motte and Cacophony and jazz pop pianist & singer Lee Jinah, and excellent k-rock bands like Hyukoh, Se So Neon and Onewe (Mamamoo's label mates). As you said, there's something for everyone. Look forward to your exploration of k-rock.
Scrap heap seems like the appropriate description. :) Solar failed about 50 auditions because she was thought to be too old, Hwasa was sent packing from her auditions because she was supposedly "fat and ugly," and Moonbyul and Wheein joined RBW after failing to debut at another company. 😊

I think MAMAMOO is still one of the greatest singing acts KPOP has produced. Like their adopted god parents Big MAMA these girls sing for real and do not depend on all sorts of electronic wizardry. Think about Mamamoo and Red Velvet, the two top vocal groups of Kpop (outside of Big Mama). Who else could have done the songs they debuted on (Don't Be Happy and Mr. Ambigious for MM and Automatic and Be Natural for RV) - I can't see anyone else that could have done it.

Beak Ji Young is a well respected veteran singer in SK. The CEO pulled out his favours/connections to help MMM gain traction for their debut. All featured "actors" are famous individuals. Some moos have mixed feelings with the prank part, because MMM already is under a lot of pressure, debuting and all, plus Solar as a leader (carrying all the burden/worries and responsibilities of the group, and her first time taking on a leader role) must've felt devastated to hear those remarks. They worked so hard to hone their skills and to be able to debut, so it was kind of harsh.
Fun facts about Mr. Ambiguous Live debut stage:
1. the little red box they have in the bg is the box they always bring when they go busking around the streets of SK. (such humble beginnings)
2. there were only 3 people supporting MMM in audience. solar mentioned that it was 2 of Moonbyul's sisters and the other was Wheein's friend. Tho it may be sad to hear, but they were actually very excited just with the fact that someone was gonna watch them perform.
3. solar's mustache ring actually dropped mid-performance, and sneakily kicked it away from the stage.

They still do the mustache move for their intro, and Moonbyul said they ALWAYS do Mr. Ambiguous for their shows, they have never left it out.
Edit 1: One interviewer asked them what they would be doing if they hadn't become singers. Hwasa said, "Unemployed."
Edit 2: In re: Piano Man, I'm disappointed we never got another tap dance performance from them. I love tap and they were good at it.

This is Mamamoo practically at the get go. I believe these are 2 of their first releases. Because the company they signed with was not a big overpowering complex that would just assign talent to staff. Most of what you see from them, music style, choreography, personality,.. comes directly from the ladies here. The finger mustache was sort of a national craze for a short time. It's in other non-related TV commericals. I think they would wear them on their fingers for stage performances of the song. The prank of giving them advice,... OBVIOUSLY they are fabulous!! Pretty much any performance of this song is going to blow you away. Mostly self-conceived & self-constructed, this is a group that completely deserves everything they can get. The SHEER talent and motivation of these 4 individuals is beyond anything you will find anywhere else. The more you see the more you are just more and more impressed by each one of them. WORLD CLASS PERFORMERS!! You can see the stage presence from each of them in the dance practice. HWASA is on fire in any room she is in.

Mr. Ambiguous 😁 love the funcky jazzy sound of this song, it's their debut single it's also an very intressting Mv, I really love the outfits, the colors the black and white thebplayfulness, you see Baek Ji-young aka Baek Z Young (a amazing singer known for her beautiful ballads and many drama ost,) featuring in the mv she's the one who visited MAMAMOO during the filming of the Mv and she's being a really harsh senior artist that criticized them as part of a hidden camera prank. Many other popular kpop idols of that time appear in the Mv like Wheesung, K. Will, Rhymer, Bumkey, Jung Joon Young, and CNBLUE's Lee Jong Hyun, Don spike and all these amazing artists are playing a charcter in the mv it's so funny♥️

Intressting fact, the song was originally an English song titled mamamoo that was made for another artist's concert, the girls where still nameless but performed this exclusive song at that concert and a staff member suggested using the name, "MAMAMOO" so that's how the group name was chosen, The song's lyrics were changed into Korean and became MAMAMOO's first debut title track and single 😊.
Their choreography is cute too, like the different colour dresses in the same style.

Love the MV, black and white and pops of color, the credits, film de noir , They look so great love the gold it pops. All the outfits are amazing once again, verry Claxy.
This has a jazzy pop r&b sound with electric swing moment Really like the combo of it, the song still maintains a modern feel with the retro espects, the electronic sound with the traditional jazz and swing elements the heavy dose of the piano and brass makes it a fun mix of styles that I truly enjoy listening too.
The introduction features Whee In asking if you (the piano man) are ready for perfection [Hell yeah], in her smoky, sultry vocals 🥰🫠 they impress me everytime with their impressive harmonizing skills during the chorus and Moon Byul‘s rap is just incredible I just love here style of droopy rap ❤️ they all are so charismatic and sound so good.

The song start off with Solar singing, moonbyul didn’t sing only rap in Mr ambiguous. All the appearances in the MV is either singer or producer, cause mamamoo from a small agency company, they need the support to go into the industry. It is sad to know that they always belittle by others during their debut time. Because they have been commented on how they look and they are not tall like model also. During their first live show, only 3 in the audience, being 2 is byul sister and one wheein friend. And the lady inside the MV is Baek Ji Young who is famous in singing OST for drama. They like to prank each others, if you watch the MMMTV, you will know their beagles behavior. Solar was crying because of the pressure of being the leader and to show result to their company. Hwasa hair was short in the MV, she didn’t wear the wig. Her CeO almost fired her for cutting her hair that’s why she wrote a lyrics about it call “I Do Me”. Baek Ji Young is a friend of their CEO and producer, Do Hoon. He asked her to be a part of the video. Since they were the first group to debut and had a very small budget they really needed people to be interested to watch the MV and so he hoped having a big name feature in the MV would help bring attention to Mamamoo. Do Hoon was the one who suggested the prank, and she actually didn’t want to do it because it sounded mean and she’s not good at being mean. 😂 But in the end she did it.
It’s something that had always rubbed me wrong, but the more I’ve watched it, the more I understand why they did it. Filming your debut MV must be so nerve wracking; but add to that the pressure the girls must have felt knowing that if they didn’t perform well enough, not only would Mamamoo likely not survive in the industry, their company would also likely take a huge hit for having invested so much money in them. The pressure must have been overwhelming. So by playing this prank, it helped them to loosen up and shake off some nerves. And probably helped give them some confidence. Apparently this is a pretty common thing to happen on film sets so help get the cast and crew out of their own heads.
Having said all that, I still cry when I see them start crying. 😂🤷🏻♀️
Sadly there are two individuals who I wish weren't in there: Joonyoung and Jonghyun. Joonyoung was the major figure in the Burning Sun Scandal and is in jail for about 5 years, while Jonghyun was one of the people in the chatroom that viewed the video - and he ended up leaving CNBlue.
I was holding it in but I was pretty mad. I think at first I didn't know what was going on and thought they were all acting, including MMM, so I was like, oh, funny skit?
I'm sure they are laughing about it now.

I believe the live performance in the black & white outfits is THE first time most people saw them. I think it was an awards show that they appeared on. The headlines for the show said, WHO ARE THEY? How are they new rookies at this level?? With Piano man you see them leaning into this music style. But it's a temporary style for them. As they soon branch out to many other styles. Rarely has one group been so musically versatile and skillful in so many areas. There is just a whole lot to who they are. And they were not shy at showing it. I would say ALL of their videos are BRILLIANT! You can practically FEEL people around the world falling in love with them as you watch the videos.
I can't wait to get to the newer MVs too. I have to mix it up because I'm getting impatient.😝
We always love their spontaneity on stage. That's what makes them special and different from other idol groups. They are just crackheads and that continues on stage as well 🤣

The Prank played on them... their Faces are priceless. What makes it so funny is that Baek Jiyoung IS a well know Singer and Actress in South Korea, and the members didn't reconize her. Solar was taking it the hardest, being the leader.

so since all the other info I could think of was given and nobody seem to talk abt this I will:
moonbyul indeed just lipsyncs to solar's lines in the beginning of mr ambiguous, also throughout the video to some other parts - I think it was done to give her more screen time as she had not that many lines
mamamoo videos sometimes have members and parts mixed up
some that I can think of rn are:
don't be happy - for some reason wheein and solar had each other's voices for almost all the video lol
peppermint chocolate - a little bit here and there, not critical
gleam - a lot, at least tho in the subs they say who actually sings this or that part
decalcomanie - just a little bit here and there, but just enough to annoy me😞
I just hate tbh when members and their parts get mixed up, not only in mvs but esp in fan made lyric videos

Most westerners who watch the prank by Baek Ji-young have the same reactions 🤔😢😡. Aside from the cultural differences, I think there's more at play than just it being entertainment. My take is this. Ji-young is a good friend of RBW's CEO and Mamamoo producer Kim Do-hoon (as were almost every celebrity in the MV, again no money). She said that he put her up to it. Do-hoon was discouraged by many of his industry peers to debut MMM. They told him promoting an unconventional girl group was doomed to fail. So he had to do everything he could to prepare them for extreme adversity. One of MMM's often overlooked strengths is their unusually strong bond. Obviously we all see it and adore it. But it didn't happen by accident. They were kept a small group on purpose. Originally there were five members, but shortly before debut she chose to go a different way. RBW could have replaced her with another trainee, but they didn't. Chemistry. All 5 continue to remain friends, awe 😮. Anyway not all of their training was about singing, dancing, and stage. He was preparing them to be artists in an industry of idols. Preparing them to have to work harder, to overcome being unaccepted and overlooked. Which leads to your questioning at the end about their lack of popularity. Headwinds. They have fought industry headwinds their entire careers. The successes that they have had is testament to their talent and their resolve both individually and as a group. And it's also because of RBW

For me, I think it's the harsh treatment by labels, media, netizens, etc that upsets me and I don't mean just for MMM, but for other idols/artists too.

I don't think I've ever seen a Kpop group who debuted with a Jazz song or a full jazz album. In a Kpop world, that's hella bold, especially from a girl group that basically everyone look down on.
That "joke" in the MV was a bit cruel from RBW tho. They know how many people in the industry said so many toxic things about them, and they brought in a Legend like Baek Ji-young to do that with them? I get what was the point but still. RBW tried to point out that they don't need to be afraid, because they're talented, but for me this isn't the best way to do it.

@@tdragonreactions I don't remember what the CEO of RBW said, but he wanted to encourage them before their debut, but this wasn't a good idea, imo. I think he saw them working hard, practicing every day, and being sad, because everyone said, they will flop, basically, and he wanted to lift their mood. But I still think it's a weird way to do it. To be fair, in the end it worked, because they worked even harder and learned to ignore the hate or write chart topping songs about haters. You'll see it in HIP, Maria, LMM etc. 😅
Also, yes, the format is great. Especially because Moomoos love to see performance reactions too.
One cringe note about Mr. Ambiguous' mv: It features two people in cameos who were caught in a heavy scandal. Jung Joon-young (the second "star in the mv - the one that stares at them) was a top DJ and singer/tv personality. Unfortunately he is also human scum, in prison for some horrible things (including gang raping drunk, unconscious women and filming them, then sharing the video in a chatroom). It was part of the Burning Sun scandal, one that rocked the Kpop world, including Seungri, who was a member of Big Bang, the biggest kpop group for about 10 years. Jung is in jail for about another year (he served 5). The other one is the guitar player, Lee Jonghyun. He was a member of the popular group CNBlue. It turned out he was one of the people in the chatroom that viewed the videos. While he didn't end up going to jail (he might have gotten community service and he did go to the military), he left CNBlue once word of his involvement got out).

I'm not a huge fan of the prank, or even any movie breaks in MVs. MMM had a LOT of buzz at the start of their career, which most guides leave out. It doesn't guarantee any success, but a lot of well respected figures in the industry saw them early and were all impressed.
They were on a roll after their debut with well liked songs, and their run at Immortal Songs and basically every other music competition gained them so many mainstream fans. They were known as the festival queens, booked at so many colleges for years. There's too many iconic moments in their career - SXSW in the early years of kpop groups visiting the US, performing for the Korean version of the Oscars, and having the usually stoic actors laughing at their adlibs, like throwing out a pickup line to one the most famous leading men.

It is very difficult not to go on a full blown rant about Mamamoo and the success they have had, compared to other K-Pop acts. Yes they are successful but compared to BlackPink or Twice (no criticism of either group) they are not where they should be. Take any pretty teen girl and train her for years (yes I know it is a boot camp) decide when and which group she will be added to, where all the songs and music are written and produced, auto tune her voice and bang, instant success. All choreography and outfits professionally provided, to boot
Compare this to Mamamoo, who as you mentioned had no money for choreographers, and they were the first signed group to RBW, so none of big three management companies backing for them.
I really enjoyed your journey of Mr Ambiguous and Piano Man.
It sounds like they are successful solo artists too so that says so much. Each can hold their own weight and then some. 💪🏼

There is a wealth of audio only with colour coded lyric videos, for Mamamoo. I mean dozens! You could base your entire channel on Mamamoo plus as you say, they have their solo material.
