- Now that our Magnum is reassembled and running on the engine test stand, let’s do some tuning to make sure it’s running well before we bolt it back into the chassis. We’ll locate the low idle speed screw, idle mixture screw, and main jet mixture screw and carefully adjust them until the engine sounds happy, demonstrating how small adjustments of quarter-turns or less can result in large changes in the way the engine runs. While we’re letting the engine run to test our adjustments, we’ll look for common leaks and other trouble spots, and verify that all our components are sealing and seating correctly. We’ll also adjust the high idle screw and check our spark plugs to make sure everyone is connecting happily.

Thanks for this series. I managed to blow up one of these, and got a used replacement and did a major service before install. This was a great reference. I never would have known to pin the governor shaft if you hadn't mentioned it.
Glad it was helpful to you. I'm happy to hear another Magnum Twin is back in service!
Great series, I just aquired my second one of these, what a great reference!
Theses are good engine
You got that right! Gotta save em!
Nice job, sounds solid 👍
Thanks! It doesn't sound like a brand new engine but it runs fantastic. That excessive crank endplay has to be some of it.
I like that Lawnboy gas tank
Good eye!! From an old Lawn Boy tiller with the C engine.
@@SolunaGarage yep I grew up around lawn boys, my dad back in the day had a Texaco gas station and also sold and serviced lawn boys.
Its all we will mow with and have for two decades. They are amazing machines.
Do you have a video showing the internal governor and how to replace it?
Nope, but I do plan on doing a full rebuild in the future and we will open up the case halves and dive in.
Hey there my name is Phil i have a Yazoo with the 18 HP magnum i was just curious what you would charge to build a motor like that please let me know thank you
It really depends on how much work it needs. A refresh that includes new pistons and rings, all new seals top to bottom/front to back, valve adjustment and lapping, (no machining work) runs about $600.00 parts, assuming the engine is brought to us and does not need removed and installed.
Hey Soluna! When is the Magnum 18 going to be in the 1882?
Same question I've been asking myself for a while.....I've taken on a lot of work for customers as I build the Soluna Garage business so my time for projects is basically nill at this point.
That being said, I still set goals for the projects and the goal for the 1882 is to have the engine in and mowing grass before the end of the 2022 season.
Thanks for checking in 🤘
@@SolunaGarage Thanks for the response! 🤘
I have the same engine on craftsman 18hp magnum I keep getting fuel in oil it came with same carb as the the one in your video I replaced it with a carb I bought on eBay and I still have same problem ! Gas goes into oil did I buy a bad carb or can it be something else? Thanks
I bet you have a bad fuel pump diaphragm that is allowing fuel to pass into the crankcase.
@@SolunaGarage I didn't know these have a fuel pump where is it located ?
@@SolunaGarage should I change the fuel pump I found part number is the diaphragm inside pump ?
If you have a fuel pump, and most do, it is on the LH side of the engine next to the carb. You should replace it with a Kohler OEM pump or switch to an electric pump.
@@SolunaGarage thanks this problem been driving crazy ! Thanks so much
I could be wrong but the only part of the engine that looks cast iron is the cylinders. Aren’t the magnums all cast iron?
Magnum and KT twins are all aluminum block, cast iron jugs, aluminum heads.
Magnum and K single cylinder engines are cast irons blocks and aluminum heads.
@@SolunaGarage Ah ok.
Is there a place to order the curved magnets 🧲 on flywheel without having to buy a whole flywheel???
Not that I am aware of! It's a really good question though. It's not like there is ever anything wrong with the flywheel itself and there isn't anything terribly special about the magnets except from their shape.
@@SolunaGarage yeah another garage had same… Got to buy whole flywheel… Off to search for a used 18 hp Koehler… Thank you
