Dedicated to the belief that the world and its abundance belongs to all of us--not only to a privileged few:
Bread and Roses was a poem and song that emerged during the women's millworker strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1912. Women were fighting for fair wages, child labor laws, overtime pay, fair working conditions. Part of their strike proclamation read:
"We, the 20,000 textile workers of Lawrence, are out on strike for the right to live free from slavery and starvation; free from overwork and underpay; free from a state of affairs that had become so unbearable and beyond our control, that we were compelled to march out of the slave pens of Lawrence in united resistance against the wrongs and injustice of years and years of wage slavery."
This song came to mind recently because of the workers who are fighting for jobs, and for their union bargaining rights--fighting against the rich and powerful who seem to be trying to make workers and labor unions the enemy. My heart goes out to all who struggle for bread and roses. - Hudba
What a moving version of this song. I've loved Bread and Roses for fifty years or so. I sent it to some friends today several of whom found this very moving. And I was getting near tears seeing the visuals you chose. Thank you. We have to keep on struggling.
Thank you, Judy! It is an honor for me to spotlight the women who came before us and fought for our rights. Happy International Women’s Day. Stay safe and strong!
As we come marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill-lofts gray
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing, "Bread and Roses, Bread and Roses."
As we come marching, marching, we battle, too, for men--
For they are women's children and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes--
Hearts starve as well as bodies: Give us Bread, but give us Roses!
As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient song of Bread;
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew--
Yes, bread we fight for--but we fight for Roses, too.
As we come marching, marching, we bring the Greater Days --
The rising of the women means the rising of the race --
No more the drudge and idler ten that toil where one reposes
But sharing of life's glories: Bread and Roses, Bread and Roses!

Again I'm moved to tears on this May Day. Nice job Kate.
lovely from Manchester uk, this was sang at the demonstration on the 4th October 2015
just to add my grandmother started in the mill at 12, yes 12
As we go marching, marching
In the beauty of the day
A million darkened kitchens
A thousand mill lofts gray
Are touched with all the radiance
That a sudden sun discloses
For the people hear us singing
Bread and roses, bread and roses
As we go marching, marching
We battle too for men
For they are women's children
And we mother them again
Our lives shall not be sweetened
From birth until life closes
Hearts starve as well as bodies
Give us bread, but give us roses
As we go marching, marching
Unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing
Their ancient call for bread
Small art and love and beauty
Their drudging spirits knew
Yes, it is bread we fight for
But we fight for roses too
As we go marching, marching
We bring the greater days
For the rising of the women
Means the rising of the race
No more the drudge and idler
Tender toil where one reposes
But the sharing of lives glories
Bread and roses, bread and roses
(Bread and roses, bread and roses)
Our lives shall not be sweated
From birth until life closes
Hearts starve as well as bodies
Bread and roses, bread and roses
One of the most important songs from last century!
Very nice creation of art works and historical pictures!
Thank you for share Malacigla!
A completely beautiful version. The video is moving, too.
I love this! Congratulations. I've been looking around CZcams to see different versions of "Bread and Roses," having been very moved by it when I saw the movie "Pride" recently. Beautiful multi-tracking with a beautiful voice and an incredibly emotional and courageous song. Thank you.
Thank you. I think this song should "come back" in today's fight for workers' rights, living wage, equal pay for women, etc. I've known this song for decades, but last summer visited Lawrence Mass. where the Bread & Roses strike took place.
Fantastic version, & for all those with access to BBC4 there is a brilliant documentary about the women's suffrage movement
I'm floored!
Très très belle version. Very very beautiful version. Bravo
God bless you for posting this. I've solidarity with you, sister.♥️✊

Thank you very much for this nice version of Bread and Roses !!
Just beautiful....thank you.
Beautiful
Beautiful, Kate, in every way.
Thank you for the beautiful rendering of this song: it's about the strike that took place in the home-town of my people!
Thank you! I visited the Bread and Roses festival in Lawrence several years ago and was deeply moved by it all.
Ωραιο!!!
I understand that Mimi (Baez) Farina did the music - and the lyrics were
by J. Oppenheim (1912?) ... This is such a LOVEly rendition - so fitting today still! Love/peace, Elizabeth (91)
Mimi Farina wrote the lyrics.
Agreed it is a nicely done version of this song, but it's not the same as Joan Baez and her late little sister, Mimi Farina, who were simply outstanding.
Per my niece: "Hi, Kate! I’m a girl from San Antonio, TX, and I would like to use this CZcams video for my school history project about the Bread and Roses Strike of 1912. I hope you will accept this offer, and thank you!"
Yes, you are welcome to use it, and it’s important for your generation to know this history! (Please be sure to include my name in your presentation.)
Thank you so much! I will definitely credit your beautiful work and try to share it with you!
Hi Kate, is there any way you could share a downloadable copy of your song? One of the judges says that we can't link to CZcams in my niece's project. If not, I understand - it was still great to see and listen to your video. Thanks!
I can send you a Dropbox link if you give me a personal email address.
Thanks Kate!

Sorry this version while sung well, lacks emotion and conviction therefore the power of the song is lost
