  • My diabetic patients would ask " Why is my glucose meter not accurate? Is it my cheap glucose meter? The answer is yes and no. There are cheap glucose meters that are fairly accurate. There are very expensive meters and strips that are not super accurate either. Both type 1 diabetics and patients with type 2 diabetes need to check their blood sugars frequently. Getting different glucose readings when you check blood sugar can be frustrating but also it is inevitable. It is an inherent variability( unavoidable error) in every meter. Some meters are better than others. Dr. Ahmet Ergin discusses this in detail in this video. Sometimes expired or spoiled strips and inaccurate techniques also may give erroneous readings. At SugarMDs our coaches will teach you the most accurate way of checking blood sugars. We also have Bluetooth and cellular meters that transfer data to us instantly. Therefore, you get the support you need to manage your diabetes at any time.

    Your content is very helpful, i had a Doctors appointment two weeks ago for a follow-up about my diabetes, my sugar was at 590, my A1C at 14.4, and I figured i should take my glucose meter with me, and the pharmacist was glad that I took my meter and it made it so much easier for her to check my sugar levels, she even reduced the insulin from 40 to 32 because I was progressing. So yes, like you said, always have your glucose meter every time you have a Doctors appointment.

    Mine is a Care Touch, and it has a variability of about 10 points from one hand to the other. The left hand is usually the highest. I came across this by playing with the thing. I am prediabetic, and my bg is actually normal in the low 90s even 80s lately, My first lab put my A1Cin the prediabetic, but it is normal now. I check myself frequently to check if my dietary plan is adequate to avoid DM. It seems it is working.

    I noticed something odd about my Care Touch blood glucose monitoring system when I gave myself three (3) consecutive tests in a row and they all gave different readings. The readings were: 2:51 pm = 89, 2:53 pm = 100, 2:57 pm = 114. After researching the topic I found that blood testing devices available to the public only have to be 80% accurate. That means your numbers could be off 20 points in either direction. Can anyone say, "That's Huge.?"

    When getting tested at a place like the hospital, where they use 1 device to test everyone, isn't that contamination of the device with someone else's blood? I am curious as I have been tested and its WILD every time but when tested with my device, its consistent and in normal levels.

    • @bdb3350
      @bdb3350 Pล™ed 3 lety +2

      No. Cross contamination of samples is impossible because strips are only good for one test and then they are junk. Also blood doesn't enter the machine. If blood or any liquid entered the machine it would damage or destroy it. Blood is only absorbed into the end of the test strip only where a chemical reaction takes place and creates an electrical signal (like turning on a switch). Blood has a little bit of resistance (restricts electrical flow), so depending on how much current passes through the blood sample a your result is displayed. Like testing a battery with a volt meter; chemical reaction creates current and the volt meter measures the electricity.

      Was the lancet a one time disposal or like one that comes with your meter? Single use lancets are fine to use out of the box as the needle is covered and doesn't penetrate deep enough to cause infection even after use. A good scratch from a cat is deeper. IF THEY REUSED a lancet like the one you have without changing the needle and sanitizing it then I would definitely file an infection control QA report (have them written up). That person really needs to have a sit down with their supervisor. Ive been in the health field for almost 30 years so Ive seen and never took home anything but my paycheck; Infection control protects everyone.
      As for the strip getting contaminated probably not, unless she had allot of blood or other nasty stuff on her hands. As for hand washing, that is more a infection control issue. Usually if someone is wearing gloves and not contaminated fresh gloves are acceptable as long as they were not contaminated by other bio-hazard.
      EXCELLENT POINTS on the alcohol. Yes, Alcohol if its not evaporated as well as many hand soaps can / will alter a test as they mimic sugar. Alcohol is only a topical (on the skin) or hard surface antiseptic. I recommend people be consistent either wash hands with plain water before checking BG or use alcohol every time.

It does lay against the finger but I did not see them change the needle inside however they could have before bringing the test to me. I have psoriasis, and I wonder if that somehow hurt the evaporation of the alcohol. She didn't wear gloves or wash her hands before testing me so I may report her. For now on I will make an effort to wash my hands before letting them test me again and say no to the alcohol and no gloves. I am just glad my levels are normal at home. Thank you for all the help.

    Can a glucose meter predict prediabetes?

      Not always, at least in my experience. I was diagnosed with normal low 90s; however, my A1C was another story. If you have doubts get your A1C, and IR test if possible. If they take your BG they may miss you pre or even diabetes. Eventually, your BG will get higher, but it may be years, and very rarely never.

    Video content good, but the changing ambient light value on the vid is distracting and headache inducing.

    This guy is a joke. He makes stuff up as he goes along. Look at the research. All meters are supposed to meet ISO standards but most of them you can buy are worse.
