Cautious Clay: Tiny Desk Concert

- Oct. 24, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- He came to the Tiny Desk with friends, a lot of friends. In fact, Josh Karpeh, best known in the music world as Cautious Clay, put together a backing vocal ensemble of friends he's known since his days as a music student at The George Washington University here in D.C. And so, with five singers - along with a drummer, keyboardist and a bassist - Cautious Clay brought a warm, thoughtful and chill vibe to the Tiny Desk.
I was first struck by Cautious Clay's charismatic spirit at a sold-out show in D.C. earlier this year. And while I was already captivated by his seemingly effortless singing, with hints of James Blake and Sampha, when he picked up his saxophone and, later, a flute, I was won over by his rich sound-palette. Here at the Tiny Desk, Cautious Clay opens with "Cold War," a song that I interpret to be about commitments within relationships. The line, "In it for the monetary growth and power / But we divided at the bottom of this whiskey sour" shows the humor and insight that I love in his lyrics.
There's good reason why I'm so certain that this little-known artist will be well-known in the coming year: he's a bright talent, exploring music with a curiosity and invention that is genuine, without pretense and with intentions that aren't aimed at fame but rather meant for friends.
Set List
"Cold War"
"Call Me"
"Stolen Moments"

Surprised to see the guy on keys play EVERY note of the bassline. Was waiting for him to start looping but he never did... props my guy.
Summer Treneal you can tell that guy feels the music in the depths of his soul, lol. Curious how much time and practice it takes to be able to perform like that in one take
@@twoslowcabrio I know, I feel like it comes down to confidence that you can just do it. Plus practice lol
impressive, indeed!
PROPS TO HIM
I had to keep looking to make sure. He didn't miss a beat.
I made a habit of listening to every tiny desk so I can find gems like this one
Ditto. its like finding gold in the sand.
Same here!!!
Cheers to that!
vashkun1 SAME!!! 💯🙌
Literally how I found Car Seat Headrest, Natalia Lafourcade, Perfume Genius, etc.
been patiently waiting for this. cautious clay deserves everything good coming his way
Me too! Just surprised that he has a Tiny Desk performance now. Great things are clearly approaching now. I love his musicality
I feel the problem here is about chours its not the same like the original, and who mix the all things, voice key drum guitar, no make a mix so sweet, with revs delays and all stuff to make you feel so sweet this song, the man who are singing GREAT voice but if the man Behind the musician make the correctly mix....The song make you feel like the original...anyway GreatSong
Still too underrated
I love the tone of his voice.
like velvet
Found this artist through still woozy in the song “cheesin” today. This is my favorite tiny desk from what I’ve seen. He’s clinically underrated. Great voice and can play multiple instruments, it’s very impressive.
His voice is incredibly smooth and so natural and effortless. It makes it so chill, relaxes me deeply. Hope to hear more from this dude.
That syntbass is so crunchy on track 1!!!!!

Word's can't describe how happy I was when he picked up that Sax!! 🙌
Damn this the tiny desk i never knew i needed
The diversity of the music and the people on this channel really reminds me of how wonderfully special America is. Keep it up NPR!
They invite non-american artists too. Quite often actually.
@@omarjohnson1027 Americans often forget to realize that the states aren't the whole world
Shut the fuck up , go learn about the real history of this country and it's opression on minoritys
@@Studerphil What's your point? Is NPR, of all places, the place to make it?
A talking Sax and soulful sweet harmonic rhythm......didnt expect a flute to turn up a that point.....yo my musical bro s
i love when he pulls out the sax!!! amazing job.
I first heard Cautious Clay on Season 3 of the HBO Original Series, Insecure, which always features incredible music. His song "Cold War" is track #3 on music album from that most recent season. His voice and that particular track grabbed my attention as a stand-out. I searched further and found this Tiny Desk performance, which really showcases his broad talent. Thanks as always, NPR, for featuring amazing artists in such an intimate venue... love it!
I heard him on 13 reasons why swim home and was hooked
