    Spoiler ahead: Casting genuinely likable men as a shitty "nice guy" was brilliant. It really shows you how rapists/rape-apologists can be everyday "nice guys" and funny likeable men. It's super scary.

      For sure!You spend the whole movie hoping against hope that they’ll opposite to the way you fear they will and when they end up being awful it’s so much worse. Also makes for (in Bo’s case at least) a much more 3 dimensional character.

      @@spenserwalker4361 I kept wishing Bo's character to have a change of heart BUT IT KEPT GETTING WORSE. Truly a 3 dimensional character done well.
      It is a movie that I'm gonna remember forever. It absolutely subverted all my expectations.
      It really shows how the people who say "not all men" are just standing by as the disasters unveil.

      YES!!! One thing that took me time to process was Ryan bc I think we all know some version of this type of guy. I was waiting for the ball to drop on him since the pharmacy scene and when the ball did drop I wasn't expecting it to be as awful as it was. If there's one thing that shook me the most was in the film, it was Ryan.

      @Septembergirl10 Před 3 lety +19

      I knew something was going to be off about Ryan but god I reeeeeeally wished it wasn’t so. Also the fact that he’s a charmer of a character and Bo in general you kind of gloss over his red flags which is amazing like Chan said it makes it adds so much depth and makes it all the more frightening. An amazing film and commentary on addressing the systems involved in rape culture. Can’t stop thinking about it.

      His character Ryan was essential to the film in every single way.
      1. He provided adorable levity.
      2. He enabled us to feel the disappointment, heartbreak, and betrayal that Cassie did, and thus illustrated why it’s so hard (and dangerous) to be trusting of men when you’re a woman.
      3. He reminded us that it’s the men who are endearing and charming and beloved and seem totally benevolent are still completely capable of hiding things, of lying to your face, of making excuses for crimes and bad behavior, of denying culpability, of turning on you, of manipulation, of putting women down and resenting them when they can’t control them, of every sin that you think “bad people’ do, and that they ARE doing these things, HAVE done these things.
      4. His character was the reflection of our society, turning a blind eye to others’ plight and trauma except when it entertains us, making excuses for the way we stand by and do nothing, always selfishly acting in our own self interests while making sure to be well liked so we can tell ourselves that we’re good and blameless, and becoming defensive instead of penitent when we’re called out on our bullshit.
      Brilliantly written character written by Emerald Fennel and perfectly acted by Bo Burnham.

    Indeed “Ryan” (Burnhams character) was completely crazy. He was drawn to Cassie because he knew what happened to her friend, was involved in that past directly and wanted to control the current narrative in order to appease his enormous past guilt. The ending was beyond plot twist and shocking. I find it bizarre that Burnham describes his character as the “nice guy” when clearly he had a screw loose and turned out to be a complete nightmare. It’s a shame because they did get along. Regrettably all of those frat bitches were complete sociopaths working the charm to hide their avarice, ruthless and competitiveness acting to never be sensitive lawfully to well...anything. As if all that mattered was them winning in every situation. Very bizarre people. Extraordinary film drawing on Victor Hugo’s The Count of Monte Cristina. Burnham was excellent in the film. His musical phrasing of the lines added a lot to the character and he was never boring or tiresome in any of his scenes. He was also rather believable. Carey Mulligan knocked it out of the park. A+ film on a very dark subject.

But the folks in NYC who never bother to call the police when they hear "help!" wouldn't be "Bad people" in my book either. Neglectful, apathetic, sure, not good, etc. In D&D moral alignment, Ryan is a Lawful Neutral, True Neutral. But he's not evil. Whereas I would characterize Cassie's character as Chaotic Good in the beginning, Chaotic Neutral as the plot progresses, but ultimately Chaotic Evil by the end, given her severe vigilanteism at the expense of other people's wellbeing, especially at HER OWN wellbeing.

    That fact that he thinks he’s “the good guy” is seriously messed up!! Like no, you weren’t as bad as the other but your character was also a “bad guy” by simply doing NOTHING!
