I've been in the automotive industry for 8 years and an automotive technician for over 4 years now thinking this is the only highest-paying job in the Industry. I'm telling you man, after six different dealerships, it really takes a toll on you because of politics and competition. I only just stumbled across your video because someone I used to work with had mentioned about a company that's looking to hire technicians and the pay was unbelievably High. Right now I'm waiting for my second interview and in hopes to looking forward to making it a permanent career. Thanks again for the video.
I interview for CAT service center today and I’m pretty excited. I went to school for industrial systems technology and worked a year at a large manufacturer and decided I wanted more autonomy, l like to work by myself. My dad was a forklift tech for over 40 years and always made a good wage so I decided it might be a good trade to start.

I was a nissan forklift tech for 8 years. I moved on to control work n frequency inverter drives a few years ago. The problem I see with younger workers is they won't tough it out till they get good at something. you got to push through that rough learning curve to get the experience and $.
yes sir I see it to all the time talented guys give up to fast or jump around for money get over there head and quit . on the Nissans I replaced 45 complete wire harnesses on some Barrett double Jacks once for Walmart DC it was fun fun lol

Great video! One piece of advice is to see what the age of the other batteries are and replace all of them. It looks like it has 1 newer battery and now another new one you’re replacing. I feel that there will be another service call in the near future for the same problem when another battery drops out. JMO.
I agree. I always replace all four. If the customer balks at that I explain that odds are very good that I;ll be back out in a month, with a second travel charge, labor charge and clean up. Then I'll be back again for the 3rd and the 4th batteries. It really does always work like that. The old batteries are weaker and can't keep up with the new one. Been doing this since 1971 and pretty soon I'll probably get good at it. I mean, I hope so anyway.
I have a job interview tomorrow with Crown. I really hope I get the Job. No joke this Looks like an awesome career to have. …. I just graduated last March from UEI College and got a degree to be automotive technician and got a job right after collage at Nissan to be a Lube. Technician…. 4 months go by at Nissan….and I wasn't happy working there and did not see myself going anywhere. Or doing anything good. Working for big. Corporation like Nissan, They only care about profits. They don't care about the customer. I want to work at a place that values their customers and where my hard work shows. And I'm praying to God right now that I get this job. Thank you for this video, man. It's going to help me tomorrow. In the interview.

cool man!, yeah id like to see more of stuff like this for sure! seeing someone think and diagnose issues with things like this, we forget the world runs on machines like this, we average people dont see, but are why we live the quality of life we do and how we can get stuff shipped to us from the other side of the world for cheaps! To anyone looking to get into the business,go with a company that provides training to ALL of it's techs and not just a select few that the owner or service manger likes.I have been on the road for 20 years and 80 to 90% of what i know i learned on my own because i was not given the training that was promised,with today's lifts being so complex you have to have it. The large companies do a pretty good job because they are advanced enough to know the value of it of it which is why they are the larger companies,mid size and smaller companies still operate on the buddy system,if you are buddies with members of management you will receive the training,if not you will be subservient to the techs who did get it and you will be a second class employee and treated as such,back in the day the lifts were simple and if you had good mechanical aptitude you could teach yourself,not anymore so if you want to get into it find a company who provides equal training to ALL techs and walk away when it becomes obvious they don't.

It did! Been a road tech for them now 9 months. They are trying to fast track me to be lead tech of my zone .it’s easy work. Gets boring sometimes but I get to make my own hours, work life balance is great . Best decision I ever made. 🍻
Rusty good find but tell your customer all batteries have to be changed, cuz when you charge the pack the new one charges first and the other drain it...good luck!
You can get into the field as an apprentice if you have a mechanical back ground and can get your foot in the door they will offer all the training you want

Any suggestions on how to get into the industry? I have no professional automotive shop experience, but I'm a pretty knowledgeable DIY auto repair hobbyist with lots of tools. I feel like it could easily translate to forklift repair.
I’m currently in a one program for automotive and they offer a program for CAT. It’s strictly a forklift program and it’s at a community college so it’s very cheap. Would you say a class like that would be worth a shot or just apply at a company for training?

When you educate yourself it is always cars and trucks to study but not just forklists, but it is almost the same systems, it has electrical, mechnical and hydrualic but not special eucation if you look around. Some of the repairs they do car-study and get some practial hours and then go out. I study heavy trucks but want to do forkilft cause I drove that for years but are now more into the tecnical, mechancial and hydraulic stuff. What did you go and is there still there that education? Thanks for the video. More if you have time.
What size are the motors on these "pallet jacks" typically? Im looking to convert a small old tractor with a 10-15hp petrol engine. Its super low geared and I think one of these might be a perfect donor. Its just a tractor for around the house, not for plowing all day long. The hydraulics on the tractor is also driven by a belt driven pump so keeping the dc hydraulics would also be perfect. Any advice what to look for in a donor? I guess the older ones are simpler, but I suppose the newer ones are more efficient.
The DC hyd is 24 v and would work for very short run times but doesn't hold but one quart of hyd oil for functions the motor for drive is AC three phase on this lift I would say it is 5 hp
@@Rusty411 Thank you for quick and excellent reply. Its greatly appreciated. The hydraulics on the tractor is only for lifting the three point hitch. Nothing that stays on permanently so I think it would work perfectly. Its probably much higher pressure then the old system :-) The AC motor is probably big enough. Electrics are strong and have a flat power curve. But maybe a small electric counterweight forklift would be a better donor with a slightly larger motor. For me personally I would love to keep the control system etc. Mechanics, welding, machining etc are no problems. Even basic simple electronics are OK, but I would preger not to have to purchase/build a control system for the drive motor. Any advice where to find a donor? I was thinking about contacting a local fork lift service company and hope they can point me in the right direction.

Hey bro you know what could be wrong with a electric palllet Jack when it lifts the palllet like half way it kinda looses power it doesn't lift and strong as it should hydraulic pump check it works
Forklifts are stupid easy if you have general knowledge of electrical. Now, changing some parts can be difficult. They don’t make that part easy on you lol.
I know this is old video but you should never replace one battery in pack when one checks bad change all four the other three will go bad very soon and he will do back
Ha first lesson in this business you can only do what the cust approves lol no matter how frustrating it may be 28 years I been doing this job and one thing I have learned the larger rhe Company your servicing the cheaper they are lol but yes ideally 4 new batteries but there budget will only pay for one makes absolutely no sense to me either job security I guess on the other hand I have not been back on this lift since for anything
I want to work with my hands and got offered a job at crown to be a forklift tech. I was a lube tech at a Toyota car dealership before. They said 6 weeks paid training and then I can go out. Do you think it’s worth it? How hard is it on the body? Should I go to Toyota forklift or Crown? Thanks.

+Rusty 411 lol I worked for DC 7019 in Brundidge AL. 300+ lifts. single jack, double jacks, RC's n RR,s. then a few specialized stuff.

How do you replace the 2 lower batteries? If I'm not mistaken, the battery cage swings out. But where does it unlatch?

Can you add a lesson on the shock sensors. It’s over reacting to the smallest of cracks in the floors and shutting off.
Unfortunately unless you have have access to insight/infolink you can’t change the parameters. -crown tech

1 Bad battery, chech if you have dropimg down to negative .
I could of told you the battery volts was low the moment you turned the key on !! And the battery gauge was shownin nealy flat !!

Check the switches at the bottom of the handle see if there is a broken wire first then if that's good the throttle pot will be the issue
Nobody wants to be working on that shit outside when the weather sucks. It's a huge deterrent to anyone considering the profession.

It is worth it man i have worked in car shops semi shops and various other mechanics jobs go for it with the fork lifts i think you will like it
