- One of F1’s most popular and longest-serving team bosses, Guenther Steiner, has left his role in charge of Haas. It’s a shock move that poses serious questions about the team’s prospects and future.
It’s almost unthinkable to imagine Haas without Steiner, as while the team bears the name of its owner Gene Haas, this was really Steiner F1 in all but name.
Steiner was the man who made F1’s strangest team set-up possible and became an unexpected star of the Netflix Drive to Survive series.
Steiner’s departure, with former director of engineering Ayao Komatsu taking over as team principal, has surprised almost everybody in F1. BUT there has been discontent bubbling away for some time now, and the situation had been coming to a head behind the scenes. Now, Steiner’s gone, and technical director Simone Resta is understood to be out as well.
There were frustrations with the way that Haas was run from the very top, and that means eponymous team owner Gene Haas, who has seemingly become apathetic towards his own F1 team and refused to invest in it.
Steiner and Haas disagreed on the team’s potential in its current form. While Steiner felt Haas needed steady investment over the next few years, as it had outgrown its unique multi-location, Ferrari-dependent model, Gene Haas believes the team has underachieved and does not need more resources or improved facilities to perform better.

I feel like Haas is the only team on the grid with no real vision for the future. I don’t know how they’re planning on improving without changing their operating model.
That is the issue: they don't plan on improving, because management think their strategy is correct.
Alpine / Renault would come in second in my opinion. Where is that team going?

@@lore-lv2yothat in and of itself is a future plan. They’re also trying to improve, which is why they’re pushing Audi to dump more money into the project so they have more to work with. Essentially, their goal is the same as Aston Martin’s: to be a title contender by around 2026

Gene Haas made it very clear from the outset that all he was interested in was a rolling billboard for HAAS. It was a shame then and it is a shame now.
Haas was a thief and had to pay the price. Not surprised that he still is though. Let’s hope Steiner can get his share of the team.. It was understood that Steiner was a partner with Haas.

It pisses me of how a team like Haas whose owner barely cares about the sport is let stay, while Andretti has had to fight so much to try to enter the grid

Other teams had a chance to enter when the last Concorde Agreement was signed in 2021 (during a time where the teams and the sport was suffering huge losses) - nobody chose to do that. Now when things are rosy again, they want a slice of the gravy train without taking any of the risks in times of uncertainty.

I had a boss like him for a while. Overall an ok guy if things went according to plan but utterly useless if things went wrong. Which wasn't uncommon.
I fear all those talents are being wasted away under Gene Haas's disinterest in investing to move the team up the Constructors year after year... better to let Andretti buy Gene out and operate the team as a contender rather than a back marker... the team, not Haas, deserves better

It's been a foregone conclusion for several months, since Steiner started making public statements that Gene Haas owed him an ownership piece. I think Steiner overestimated his popularity with the fans, and thought that would help pressure Haas. Clearly it didn't.

@@vandalsgarage How this imbroglio may or may not affect Steiner is the minor issue IMHO. As others here have said, the bigger issue is the team and how it will fare. Gene Haas wants to run an F1 team merely as an advertising and marketing vehicle and is quite happy to sit at the back of the grid, which is unfair to the people who work for the outfit, especially Kevin and Nico, and for the sport as a whole. I, like others here, think Haas should sell the team to Andretti. They are racers and they would bring expertise and, even more importantly, ambition, to the grid. Gene can always reserve some advertising space on the cars since that is, in effect, all he wants.
Gunther and Mattia making their own Netflix show where they just cruise around The Dolomites in Italy in a small, old model Fiat 500 and they'll just joke around in Italian about their time at F1 and how the grapevines are growing nicely this year to make their signature Foksmash & Sbinotto Wine.
It's all orchestrated and all comming together now.

At this point Haas is just a wasted grid space... with teams that actually want to make things happen like andretti being denied it angers me to no end having to stand the fact that one out of 10 precious teams is just there to show up for sponsors...

The drivers Magnussen and Hulkenberg are midfield drivers, but haas chooce the money out of russia and the ferrari dropspot with schumacher, haas is always mentioned that they fired him, but he was ferrari contract and not good enough, ferrari dropped him and haas was not his employer, but i think they need to sell and the fia needs to make place for a possible 11th and 12th team, the teams should not have any saying in that, ferrari saids the stop then well, so wat, don't believe it
Honestly, Andretti probably wants the same thing just to make money. Not real successful in motorsports and now wants to bandwagon on f1 finally making money after all these teams survived the past few years. He should have invested back then not now! I want to see real racing not what the American teams want to bring. I’ve watched f1 long enough to know, and I’m an American so there goes that.
It’s hard to understand why he doesn’t sell if he is not interested in investing. Such an elite sport with so few players it’s no longer a good fit to have someone there just to be a rolling billboard

Either The Race knew about this for a while or the script for this video was written at a really furious pace.
Most of the goings on in the paddock are usually known by everyone in F1 for a few days before it becomes official. Or at the very least, rumors are flying about. These guys probably caught wind of some news a few days ago.
Not like this is a shock so they could have had a general script written even if they hadn't heard any rumours.

Haas' struggles/poor performances and Genes indifference to the team makes the "new teams need to bring value to the grid" argument by the teams look more ridiculous.

It's even more annoying to me now that the other teams have been reluctant about Andretti joining the grid because they're not sure what value Andretti could bring to F1 and yet by the sounds of it, Haas are literally just there to make the numbers up so long as Gene gets money out of it. I could have sworn I remember reading at the time (I think it was in Autosport if I remember correctly) when Haas announced they were joining F1 their intention was to be a front runner competing for wins and championships. I wonder where that ambition went?

You can't expect other teams to accept taking a pay cut just because one of the existing team owner is only there for marketing reasons.

It's all about money mate. Andretti in => pie gets divided into 11 instead of 10 parts => less money for current teams. When they say they're not sure what the value Andretti would bring is, they're really saying they're unconvinced the pie would grow so much just because Andretti joined that they'd get more money out of it than they stand to lose. And honestly they're probably right.

I'm surprised he lasted this long with HAAS. I thought for sure he was gone after season two of Drive to Survive.
Then Haas would of had nothing. No sponsor and just basic money that Haas himself puts in and that not enough to develop a race winning car. Haas wants one thing a big platform to advertise on.
@@chriscollins550 I looked at it merely from a performance perspective. Gunther would talk, but nothing changed. After two seasons, I figured Gene Haas would give him the boot. I just hope they employ engineers that can make a difference under new leadership.

They been doing the same strategy for past few year's now and that's down to the strategy team bassed in America. They build a car around Ferrari part's but if them engendering team doesn't know how it works or how their car design must be to make them part's work then the car won't work as well because them part's don't go with that car.

The truth is that Haas is no more American than any other team on the grid. As far as I know the only American associated with the team is Gene Haas, and other than owning this mess he does sweet f-all with the team. Zack Brown's level of involvement would make McLaren more American than Haas. And regarding "basing," all the team facilities are in the UK as is the F1 engineering staff. Engine and transmission are Ferrari and the chassis are built by Dallara, so the functional aspects of the team are more Italian than American. Shoot, if they sold the team to Michael Andretti, the team would probably become less Italian on net.
Gene really should just sell. Michael is already getting facilities ready in Indiana.
This is AMAZING news. Gene Haas has come out and said, in writing, that the team hasn't been competing "correctly" and that everything that the team has achieved in the past under it's minuscule budget are nothing to do with Gene and all because of Steiner. So when the team inevitably craters next season he has no one to fire but himself.
First big brain move, grab the technical head who built the car that has been eating its tires all season and promote him. Nice job Gene.

I don’t think it was this guy’s idea. Recall that Haas’ entire concept is basically just a slightly different Ferrari. It follows literally exactly the same concept as the Ferrari does, and the big problem with the Ferrari is that the Ferrari eats its tires. If the Ferrari eats its tires, and the Haas is basically just a white Ferrari, ofc the Haas is going to eat its tires too

I remember on DTS, Geunter calling Haas needing money after a crash. Reminded me of a college kid calling his frustrated dad. Demeaning for Geunter, and no way to run a racing team.

I've always supported the underdog teams punching above their weight- Hesketh, Brawn and Jordan being fine examples. It adds interest to the grid.
IMO these guys had a good first three years but pretty much have not punched at all since Australia 2019.
2-3 strong weekends in 2022 is all they put together after focusing solely on that season for over 2 whole years with the added luck of having a correct approach to the new rules from the get-go, and they were on the same level of performance as Williams two thirds into the season, after Williams had a shocking start with almost everything wrong in their concept.
I think they punch way below their weight, with weight intended as talent and effort put in by their employees, who surely care about F1 to be working for such a mess of a company. Now could the same be said for Gene...

The only jab that HAAS threw was in 2018 with a P5 and every other season thereafter, them not showing up to a race weekend would have achieve almost equal results.
Haas seems uninterested in throwing any sort of punch.
This is all the more reason why I want Andretti in F1. I want a real American team that is better organised and is should be actually capable of winning. Haas hasn't been very successful in F1 and lately not even in Nascar (Baring the Xfinity series championship with Cole Custer).

I really feel for Steiner who is actually really underrated as a Team principle, considering the type of owner that Haas, he's done an excellent job in order to achieve whatever progress they have so far. He should be hot property right now.
There's no way you can judge a team principal from the outside. He could be a terrible leader. Or a good one. Netflix has made him popular but that doesn't make him a better manager.

Incredibly frustrating that a time with such low expectations exists but yet there's such opposition to Andretti having a place on the grid

In highschool our first robotics team (which was THE "sport" of our engineering school) suffered badly because our main sponsor didn't want any other sponsors, they wanted to be the sole sponsor / aid for the team. they had a handful of engineers / people from their company who were mentors, but the team never had much money and wasn't run well, but we could never get additional help or insight since the team leader (who worked VERY high up at that company) didn't want any other companies or sponsors represented on our robot in the competitions and such. Our team HAD potential, but we were always restricted in many ways... Haas feels VERY similar.
As the Race pretty much said on BBV10s, "you can have the best technical structure, amazing facillities and organization but it isn't worth anything if you don't have the money (investment)", saying that you're going to make a virtue of maximizing what you have and not invest further has NEVER been a stepping stone to the front in F1, usually its the stepping stone to a team going under or being sold
Ironically you need money to build amazing facilities and hire best technical structure, something Gene Haas wouldn't do
Making the most out of the resources that you have is the cornerstone of nearly every successful endeavour. I cannot judge who is right, Haas or Steiner, but Haas has the money so he will just have to make the call. Absolutely normal.

8:15 - This is why Haas is firmly against Andretti joining. Haas is the only US team in F1, thus it doesn’t matter if he runs in the back, the US media will cover them favorably.
If Andretti joins, that position is threatened.
Anecdotally, none of my friends/family (we are in the U.S.) that are into F1 are HAAS fans. McLaren and Mercedes seem to be the top two teams chosen amongst U.S. fans. A lot of goodwill for HAAS amongst American fans was lost when they signed Mazepin and basically put the Russian flag on the car.

It’s still “the only US F1 team”. That has value. (I’m not saying it’s right to keep Andretti out on that reason, if this is the correct scenario, Haas is quite the coward for fearing competition. I’m just saying there’s an argument for it.)
Haas could be prosperous, but when your owner isn't interested in actually going racing, i.e. the literal reason for F1, it makes F1s reluctance to Andretti (an actual multi series race team) look even more ridiculous.
Another step in the slow march for Haas leaving F1. Haas keeps pulling money and resources away slowly, performance keeps dropping in relation, eventually Gene Hass will decide he doesn't want to be known as last place and finally just leaves. Probably leaving without learning the lesson he should have, that when you dont provide resources you dont get results. I give it 3-4 years before the exit. Once they see Audi as a new team consistently outperforming them for a year or two and incapable of understanding why.

Gene just sell the team to Andretti and let some Americans with actual racing pedigree represent the country. This is the first sign that Gene actually cares about the success of his team in a long time.
But he doesn't. He doesn't want to add anymore money to it and he just wanted a yes man who will kiss he's ass.
And how exactly does this show he cares? He refuses to invest and got rid of somebody purely for disagreeing with him and arguing for more investment. He doesn't care about the team, just his ego and bottom line.

Assuming Liberty blocks an 11th team, the best thing for the sport would be Haas selling their entry to Andretti, but I can't see Gene wanting to sell to Andretti, knowing that they'd likely outperform what the Haas team has done within a season or two.

I am pretty sure that Gene just wants a ridicoulus amount of money and that is the reason it has not sold to Andretti yet. Hasas is essentially just the value of the grid spot as the team itself has no real value with most of the work being done externally and most of the knowledge being external as well (at Dallara and Ferrari). But I am pretty sure Gene ist to stubborn to see that and is still waiting for that giant payout.

I’ve been waiting for years to see this happen. Bombshell announcement? Hardly.
Gene Haas is far too involved with the team operations even though he had no clue how an F1 team works. History has proven any boss with an authoritarian approach is a recipe for failure, and that’s for teams with massive investments like Renault. Haas had virtually no investments, and that meant they’re stuck in a limbo. It doesn’t matter which team principal they have, unless Gene Haas provides any kind of investments to support the team’s needs and let the professionals do their job, they’ll forever be at the back. The owner of Force India is the proven fact that if the boss let the professionals do their jobs, the team as small as Haas could rise from a back marker to consistently fight for the best of the rest. And that’s before the budget cap

@@scottyskydog you do realize running an F1 team is an entirely different breed right? Gene evidently doesn’t even care about F1 as he stopped backing his team since the pandemic started. Heck even before the pandemic started, Gene reduced his investments by a lot and Haas’ performance fell off the cliff in the process. All he’s trying to do is to make his team successful and profitable with virtually no investment, which is about as ridiculous as it gets. Go through the history of the sport and you’ll see teams like Haas comes and goes because of that very reason.

He may have been entertaining, but I don't think it's unfair to say the team has underperformed in the second half of every season they've entered relative to the first. With the cost cap and ATR, there's no excuse for that anymore. If it wasn't now it would've been mid-season

No changes will happen. The team will still be at the back till when ever Haas decided to sell it. He doesn't want to invest in the team. Haas wants nothing more than a advertising car.
Fair critique of his leadership. I would like to see the position viewed more like how the NBA values their coaches. The team principal/manager has their own approach; but In this case the team being the car and the driver. Give Guenther the Red Bull cars and the story is different etc. Your coaching won't matter if you have a bad combo of car and driver. Or in the case of RB, really good driver and machinery that is leaps ahead of the comp.
Maybe Andretti hires Guenter as their TP as an added point of being a serious F1 team. It would also be nice for Guenter to have an owner that supports him.
If F1 wants to grow, both financially and fan basewise, they need 2 American teams, not just one. That might increase the financial base even 30%. A win-win for everyone.

I was hoping there'd be an improvement in the cars this year. Hulkenberg has the record for the longest career in F1 without a win. It would be great to see him on the top step of the podium, even just for one time.

Gene wanted to sell his automation to Russia but when that hit the fan it was no longer a viable cost and he lost interest. He has not attended many races of late. I liked Steiner. Sell it all to Andretti and let's race.
This team in its current form cannot do better. It’s amazing it even competes at is.
I don't think anyone else could have helped Haas navigate the Fubar sponsorship issues, the 2020 season and helped keep them on course and viable. But I have also never felt that he was the guy to advance the team forward.

Haas has a better shot at competing now that the shittiest TP is gone.
Before RedBull where RedBull, they were Jaguar Racing which was essentially Ford's works team. Ford ran them in a really restricted way, constantly interfered and eventually refused to put more money in. Steiner was part of that, saw the writing on the wall and walked away even when offered the top job. With Haas I think he really had a vision and wanted to do build something, but Gene clearly doesn't want that. Smart man and a smart move to just walk away at this point. Hope he makes it back with another team, somewhere like Sauber would be perfect for him.

Not the off season news I expected, but I can’t say I haven’t wondered for a while if he’s the right guy in that job
It's so sad when team owners, of any sport, just stand by and watch with no real interest in improving their team. They stand back, get the tax deductions and advertising, and allow the team to slowly die a sad death - which is what will happen. However, he knows the current value of F1 teams and he may hope to make a killing on the sale - let's hope he sells. I have no respect for the man.
I’m not surprised, two very different work ethics were bound to clash eventually, hope everything works out for him I think he’s one of the best in the sport.
Top level sporting teams are not only potentially big money but it’s a ticket too some of the most exclusive events and meetings. Not many people would know Haas without f1 and this gives Gene a big reputation win at the top end of business and society. Similar with football clubs, massive loss makers but you can have thousands of people cheer your name
The problems with Haas go way deeper than the team principal, but this was long overdue.

Yet Haas still won't invest in the team. Steiner couldn't make gold out of shit but he brought in major sponsors and development money that Haas wouldn't give him. Watch them sponsors pull away from the team now he's gone. Haas will still be at the back of by the end of next session and the session after that and after that.

He ain't selling. Losing races does not mean losing money in modern F1. He's not selling a cash cow that keeps going up in value
I think it's safe to say that Haas might not make it to 2026 if nothing significant changes. There's no direction or vision and now the team principal that's held up the team from the start is now gone as well. I think in situations like this where the team principal and team owner work this closely, blame is ultimately shared between both of them for how messy this got.
The Haas racing team probably want to be competitive and have people hold a better view of them but the current situation is that because of Gene Haas, they are just holding up a slot for a racing team that could be competitive and has that desire to win.
Gene is one of the reasons F1 doesn't allow more teams. If more teams would be managed like this the sport would slowly but surely die

On the other hand, look at what the other bottom teams are doing. Williams is spending as much as possible on facilities, Sauber is getting its own engine supplier, and Alpha Tauri is starting to use more Red Bull parts and seems to he finding genuine pace. That kind of investment/restructuring is very difficult to beat just with restructuring and better leadership
