After I found a nice quartz cluster when hiking up Cross Fell, my daughter was eager to go looking for crystals. So I gave her some choices for the summer break and she chose to go crystal hunting.
Our first visit was Groverake Mine and Frazer's Hush as these used to mine for fluorite. We picked up a couple of small samples but the place had clearly been looked at by other people. We found a place where they had covered up a site where they had been digging into one of the smaller hushes for better commercial value crystals and a quick look on ebay suggests they were professional hunters.
Our next outing we headed up to the fluorite mine at Middlehope. If you visit this area you need to be careful because the lead mines further down stream are protected sites. But the fluorite mine is not but it is still private land and taking rock samples without permission is technically illegal. So use your commonsense if you are out.
I am not a geologist but I've been learning quite a bit on our outings as we try to identify our findings. The two samples I mention about finding near Nenthead were not from the Nenthead site. Do not take stuff from there. I found what I think is Dolomite in a stream on the other side of Flinty fell. The piece that I am hoping is Alstonite but probably quartz, I literally picked up from the side of the road when I stopped to do the timelapse in my last mines video. All the rest are from various streams in the North Pennines... we were out just about every week, sometimes a couple of times a week. We bumped into a few professional hunters collecting crystals for jewellery or to tumble and sell on ebay. Also a couple of amateur geologists and rockhounds.
Once you get into the habit of checking the geology where you are walking, you find stuff like the Cheviot agates which, we picked up on our last two hikes in the Cheviot hills. There were many and the two that we picked up were of no value. Even the nice quartz cluster I picked up is of no monetary value because it has substantial damage on the top.
All in all it was great fun. We both learned a lot about geology and it was a good bonding experience with my daughter.
Our minerals:
Quartz, Fluorite (Fluorspar), Sphalerite (Zinc ore)?, Calcite, Dolomite?, Agate, Ironstone (Iron ore), Galena (Lead/Silver ore).

Wow. Thanks for sharing. Your daughters is a lucky girl to have a knowledge daddy like u.
You seem to have a map of all those mines in your head! Great idea to check them out together with the gal - especially with all those crystals & gems in mind!
We've been on that road 10000 times! I love crystal hunting up there, we have found some amazing specimens over the years. Great video! You should do more like it :)
i know Im kinda off topic but do anybody know of a good place to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@Jayce Lane I use flixzone. You can find it on google =)
It's amazing what is just lying on the ground and you prove, you do not have to dig and cause damage, just waiting for nature to naturally erode and expose these crystals. What a great way of entertaining your daughter and getting her interested in such a topic. Cheers Alan
What a smashing story, you've obviously done a good job there Northern.. well done.
You must have been chuffed at her newfound knowledge on display at the museum.. blimey, good for her.
I'm about to dive into this with my granddaughter, got her a few bits and bats for Christmas, if she shows an interest I'll be pestering you and others in the months to come.. lol.
Great video, thanks a lot for posting,
good luck.
Really enjoyed this thankyou.
Wow some lovely samples thanks for sharing
Hi do u know of any other abandoned crystal mines in the uk that is accessible to visitors we couldnt c a way into.frazers hush but we did c grove rake. Some lovely ruins there buildings wise.
Do you know of anywhere else in the UK specifically north west were I can hunt for rocks and minerals. X
So you didn't take the huge piece you put on top of the bank after lifting it out, you just pulled it out for someone else to take?
Hello there fellow local person.I'm on the pennine way near there.I'm a gold prospector and love finding crystals and cool stones.
@@NorthernWayfarer-Alice Alston is 12 miles south from me.I haven't walked cross fell but the walk goes through my garden and I talk to the walkers and some of them have shown me some nice rocks from there.there is lots of quartz in my garden.
@@NorthernWayfarer-Alice if you check out greenriggs on maps you will see where I am.where abouts do you live? I've got friends in Alston and nenthead so they know where to look.in fact around the fields in nenthead you can find lots of amethyst and fluorite.
Hi, rasthan would you like srilankan world famous gemstones 0094+071 731 80 82... my whats app...
Hi there, love the video. I'm a magpie for objects and almost anyplace I go I bring back "stones" that catch my eye....i've been into shops for a cola thinking I had change weighing down my pockets but embarrassingly it's geology! After returning from a week in Lynmouth, Devon, I of course had the normal collection of pretty things and it struck me I like this subject, I need some reference books. So (after a mistake on amazon buying a crystal healing book!!} then a periodic table text book I got a great, detailed mineral, gem and rocks book. I can't believe i have petrified wood, rose quartz, A large metamorphic metallic grey slate like rock that i can't quite place and my fave, a 2" long piece that obviously is a dark coloured crystal, pointed at the top! I'm have neither time or a place top put a rock tumbler, so not sure if hard graft will work! anyhow, loved your collection. I live in North west England on the lower pennines and looking at graphs and geo reports I think i need a home in Dorset!!
I know, it is rather addictive. It's the very realisation that you're walking on a miniature universe of colours and almost grand crystal palaces (I have a reasonable loupe) and catching the light down a small hole can open up a cavern of columns and rooms! I guess that's why i collect more at the beach than most other spots as the waves always bring out the lustre. Love Lindisfarne also and the unbelievable penman ship of the monks.. An' it's gold ye mention ey ma lad? it'll send ye ta a urly grave!!! All my best.
Nice video, we found a few a nenthead once but maybe we should be paying more attention when we are out and about, thanks for sharing
I do find it ironic that with a pal or two, some ropes, caraibinas, some other attachments with little experience can end with rescue services, as you say, using sense, not digging in rock faces or crawling down below bog covered caverns and also not out to steal anything of much value surely isn't such an issue.
I might be leaning on you for some expertise Nick, I’m gradually building a collection though it is very gradual... I’m hoping to put them into a display case and label them. Quartz is about the only one I’m mildly confident with. Going to put the case at Derwent reservoir when it’s done.
Need to visit here, I love finding crystals. Mostly calcite in my area 😄
Would you like to srilankan sapphires? 0094+071 731 80 82 world famous sapphires
I was in wales a few years ago and i found a lot of copper crystalline structures. I guess it was dissolved in water once and formed into the Crystal somehow. I thought it was pretty neat.
@@NorthernWayfarer-Alice I have been finding jasper recently (before lockdown) but it looks like it's is glacial and not from round here.
verry good
you know any good places around the delph area i can look for gems and such
Where you find that's beautiful stones
Hi Nick, you’re now my go to advisor for all things geological! Any tips on fossil hunting, heading to Berwick coastline on the hunt
Found a few at the beach just north of the tweed not exactly a T-Rex but at least we found something, will put Whitby on the list! ATB
nice video my friend. i see alot of these minerals underground . i spend a good amount of time over there. cool finds :D
@@NorthernWayfarer-Alice thanks for subscribing mate. I could show you around underground no problem. Start off easy and loads to see :)
I'm at GR 2moro if your around that way, going to find myself some purples and check out wolfcleugh for a new video ;)
Are there any UK rockhounds in the Midlands? I'm looking for somebody with more knowledge than mine to help me identify things. Books dont help :(
I'm from the midlands, but no knowledge! lol
Hey there iam local to the area and looking to start crystal collection with my daughter also as she loves picking up shiny stones I know where middle hope is but any chane of telling me where the last place was where you found all the quartz.
Thanks northen wayfarer.
Sorry, I am not disclosing the last location because there were a lot of people going there and it's caused significant damage to the area. You will find plenty of quartz in the streams around the north pennines anywhere you see a lead mine along with the fluorite and galena. Plenty of quartz in the spoil heaps around the old lead mines surrounding Cow Green reservoir too... I picked up a really lovely piece there when doing a walk with my daughter last year - just small but very sparkly. Another spot is a really long walk but the lead mines on Lambgreen Hills near Cross Fell has some nice quartz samples too.
Are the public definitely allowed on those mines as i want to go crystal hunting
@@NorthernWayfarer-Alice many thanks. For this information planning a trip soon x
Does anyone know what kind of crystals you can find near the London area?
You mean apart from in the Geological Museum, and on jewellery in Mayfair?!! Not very much I guess, as the South-East is sedimentary sand/chalk/gravel/clay.
I'm in Surrey, and I didn't think we had anything but we have lots of flint, which is nice, and some have quartz veins in them. I've also found lots of calcite where I live, but from road foundation quarried limestone! North London has some glacial deposits so there might be something there, and I've heard rocks sometimes wash down the Thames too.
Can you obtain a licence or permit to take crystals /rocks mineral from the wild from the government. To make crystal collecting legal.
@@NorthernWayfarer-Alice thanks very much for the information. I have been gold panning up at Wanlockhead on a day course we needed a permit. The estate it's on still has the right to the gold not the crown. There are old lead mines there as well. I am always looking at rocks. I have found some nice pieces of quartz in my garden while digging and I have found worked flint while walking the dog which has gone to the museum in Edinburgh. I will keep looking a lot if the beaches are nature reserves or sssi so won't take anything from there. Love beachcombing as well and metal detecting end up cleaning the beaches of rubbish. Hate seeing plastic lying around.
Baring look 4 stones then wot can we do in uk yanks av dynamight to blow a face off a mountain I no it a claim but
Where was the last pace u when to
Northern Wayfarer thanks man I know some amazing spots and even yesterday we when to one of my fav spots and found loads of gemstone 💎. I also have a few 500 million year old plant 🌱 fossil. I understand totally why u don’t want many people knowing.
Love the video btw
Where u get big crystals ?
from the spoil heaps of old mines that are in hard to reach places. The more remote and the further you have to walk to get to the mine, the more possibilities there are that the spoil will have something good in it.
❤️❤️💎😏⭐
Dang seems like anyone should jus follow this dude around. Jus leave the museum quality behind hugh. That's awful nice of u crazy
well done gd dad
The stuff you think is Alstonite is simply calcite. Calcite comes in many forms and the one you think is dolomite is another form of calcite. The rock you think is sphalerite is simply a dark rock containing lots of silica. Sphalerite is much like quartz but black as ink.
Mineral removal is far more complex than simply asking a land owner. You're asking for trouble by doing this.
One last thing - Middlehope. I spotted the bairn off to one side and screamed at the PC. Dude the hills are riddled with old shafts and muddy holes. You need to keep folk close to you when visiting because not all workings are capped or safe. Yes Middlehope has some obvious adits but it also has some uncapped shafts. Please be safe.
Yes! collecting rocks responsibly and not placing yourself in danger! why aren't you tipping your carpet, settee and kitchen units, shame.
