Celebrated director Godfrey Reggio (Koyaanisqatsi) returns after ten years with a new experimental film unlike any other from his already daring career: a bardic fairy tale about the end of the world and the beginning of a new one, tinged with apocalyptic comedy, rapturous cinematography, unforgettable vistas, and the innocence and hopes of a new generation. Featuring an electrifying score composed by Reggio’s longtime collaborator Philip Glass with additional vocals from Sussan Deyhim and co-directed by veteran editor and filmmaker Jon Kane, Once Within a Time is the indie revelation of the year.

Philip Glass, what a legend.
Godfrey had given me an overview of this project many years ago when it was under development. It is likely to be his last and perhaps best masterpiece. A difficult but hopeful fairytale for the world we are in.

Quite a feat. This is an astounding free associative layered blend of animation/live action that actually resonates pretty clearly about technology as a "trojan horse" of ills that we now must contend with. A wild imaginative (to say the least) montage (and collage) of images that create a kind of essay (or semi-story) that mankind's salvation and the salvation for future generations is in a return to nature, or at least a respect for the natural world. There needs to be a recognition of how we are unhealthily being separated from ourselves, and are trapped in a pseudo-techno utopia.
Or something like that.
Ask your kids after they watch it. They will better verbalize through their instinctual reactions to the dense and beautiful visual and sensual display of what it's all about (Alfie). Masterful.
This looks awesome ….. this will be a definite Blu ray blind buy.

Sadly, it looks like the great master director (and composer) got paired with a millennial editor -- I'm gonna guess, based in Williamsburg/Brooklyn? -- who simply took a meh run through digital plug-in effects packs in Final Cut or Premiere. We/they deserve better.
Meh, I presume that Godfrey has had the ultimate privilege of patiently working with EXACTLY the crew he intends to work with.

@@enzobuso5933 Turns out it's Jon Kane's influence. His claim to fame is simply thinking up that astronaut mascot for MTV many decades ago, which ushered in a hipster-vintage-irony aesthetic that lingered for a few years but quickly became an outdated low-fi art form. For that aesthetic to show up in 2023, under such an esteemed brand pairing as Glass and Reggio, is just sorta sad.
It's coming back to me now that I publicly criticized his stretched aspect ratio in Naqoyqatsi, when he took stock footage in original television aspect and then sloppily stretched it all out to widescreen. He hilariously defended that as a creative decision (and showed everyone a hothead temper too).
