    Thank you for sharing these aspects, Dr. Webb. It seems that the personna of a surgeon is that they are too good to make mistakes. By your sharing examples of mistakes that you have made during your residency, I'm extremely confident that you will be a fantastic attending physician and a teacher of other residents.
    Also as an attending physician, please take time to talk with your patients, and not just your residents. But I feel that will not be it challenge for you.

    As a med student I REALLY appreciate your willingness to be transparent about your mistakes! So many people in medicine like to pretend they know it all but being able to admit your shortcomings and warn the rest of us about trying to avoid those things is HIGHLY commendable!! Thanks as always Dr. Webb and keep up the great work man!! 👍🏾

    Dr. Webb, thank you for the great content! I am a 32 year old engineer and working on my masters in engineering, but I am not happy in my chosen profession. My dream has always been to become an MD. Am I too late for med school and residency @ 32?? Is being a doctor worth leaving engineering, at my age? I would want to end up in primary care.

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  Před 5 lety +20

      Hi,
      Thanks for the question. I get this question a lot. It's kind of hard to answer this question completely without knowing your story (family life, previous life experiences, future goals, etc) but here are my thoughts: You will be in your career working as a physician for 20-30+ years and I know the road to get to that point is arduous and lengthy, but I do believe it's worth it. You have to ask yourself, "Am I willing to sacrifice family and personal time, sacrifice a minimum of 8-10 years of my life and sacrifice financially to become a doctor?" And if that answer is yes, I say go for it. The average age in my medical school class was roughly 26-30 years old (oldest being 42 and youngest 23) and I currently work with 2 orthopedic surgeons who are 80+ years old. They have been a doctor for longer than I have been born. So, starting off medical school at (to overestimate it) 40 years old, you will be done around 50 years old and still can work 20 years and retire at 70.

      I hope this helps. Good luck! Remember if medicine is something you really want to do, then NEVER give up.
      Also, I just published a book about my path to medicine called "Overcoming the Odds" which I talk about my time growing up in the rough streets of Louisiana, my time as a military medic serving in Iraq, and applying to medical school then residency. I give a lot of advice after each chapter. You should definitely check it out before you start med school. It's at: www.amazon.com/author/antoniowebbmd

    You didn't realize you needed to study every day? How did you get orthopedics? LOL! Just kidding. I know you earned it. But then you had to learn that you had to continue to earn it. Many I encounter do not understand that daily study is part of being a doctor, not just as an intern or resident. A proper doctor will study the rest of his/her career. In the old days we said an article a day. Now it's CME, recerts, MCQs, cases, journals, etc. But it is essentially daily....forever....until you retire. And once you retire you might find it hard to stop. LOL! Thanks for posting your videos.

    I wouldn't say it was a "mistake" that you didn't read after you busted out an 8 to 12 hour shift at the hospital. What's a mistake is the fact that we have these kinds of work conditions thanks to crony capitalism. We don't have enough doctors and no one should have to do the same thing everyday, 12-16 hours a day. I love video games and sports but I could not play or watch games for 12-16 hours a day, I would go mad! You only get one go in this life, so never feel bad about time spent living your life.
