- On this week’s Dining on a Dime, intrepid host Lucas Peterson heads out to Brooklyn in search of some street food - and finds it near a public park in Red Hook, a somewhat isolated peninsula in western Brooklyn between the Buttermilk Channel and Gowanus Bay. Known for once having heavy industry, it now serves as the home of a number of Latin American food vendors who set up shop on the street throughout the summertime.

There's a place here in Fredericksburg Virginia called Soup and Taco that serves papusas and it's ,y very favorite dish ever. My favorite one has bean and cheese. Oh be still my beating heart I love it.
Jodie Brook there are pupusas made out of corn (common ones) and ones made out of rice flour. The rice flour ones are sturdier. Hope you can find some!

I am in El Salvador right now, and although I have seen some big pupusas that you can order at some restaurants, I´ve never seen one that big here. That needs like a pint of curtido and a pint of salsa de tomate to go to work on it. Also, the plaintain pupusa reminds me of Salvadorean empanadas, which are a delicious dessert. You mash plaintain, and that is your dough, then the filling is blancmange (some people do refried beans, and although I do not disapprove of sweet and savory mixing, that´s just not my bag. I got VERY pissed off as a kid at people that tried to force feed me that shit. That´s where my mean streak comes from); but instead of the disc shape of a pupusa, you make it like a spherical oval, kind of like a football, except rounded, and not pointy at the ends. The other variation on this theme, is to fry up a whole plaintain, and then make a longitudinal slit along it, and pipe the blancmange or beans along it. That is called a canóa, or canoe, in English. Also, of course near a soccer field. I mean, fútbol.

That "plantain pupusa" is called an empanada and they are usually made with plantain outside with milk filling and covered in either powdered sugar or sugar from cane like a dessert
