Apple CEO Tim Cook: The VICE News Tonight Interview (HBO)

- Seven years into his tenure as Apple CEO, Tim Cook remains a popular guy, especially in an Apple store in New York, where he recently waded through a sea of adoring Apple fans pleading for selfies before he sat down with VICE News Tonight for an interview.
This is partly because Cook’s competitors in Silicon Valley have set a low bar. Already under fire for being a tool for voter suppression and misinformation during the 2016 election, Facebook announced Friday that it had discovered the largest security breach in the company’s history, affecting 50 million users.
Cook said that kind of data breach won’t happen at Apple, because the personal data Apple collects stays locked on iPhones, and even Apple can’t access it. “We're not in the business of building the detailed profile of you,” Cook said. “The way we go into product design, we challenge ourselves to collect as little as possible. And when we have it, we challenge ourselves to encrypt it in the end.”
That has come at a cost to Apple’s business. Apple Music, for example, could build detailed profiles of users and sell that to advertisers, as competitors Spotify, Pandora, and Google Music do. But Cook considers that an affront to the basic promise of the Apple brand. “We don't read your messages,” he said. “These things, even in our heads, are offensive, right? To think about, these are private communications and intimate conversations that you are having. And so we wouldn't even think about that.”

VICE News the questions Tim Cook wrote for this interview were well thought. Great way to downplay apples hand in the Chinese social scoring system. Maybe one day you will all grow a set and do an exposee on the death factories that Apple builds to enslave the Chinese lower class
Not a very direct quote for a news source.
Yeah I call BULLSHIT on that, this is the guy helping kill dissidents in China lol Notice how large those pupils are, too much LSD in silly CON valley
VICE News how much did Infowars pay for that ad spot?
Ask Tim if he as ever done hardcore drugz next time plz .. thanks =)
This woman looks like she’s about to fall asleep at any moment.

Saw her in a movie.... I think its called the Ice Age

Femmy FATALITY
An interview in a public space is an interesting format.
The public interview is a common theme with Apple. When interviewing for a job, it is out in the open during normal business. Very refreshing, no closed doors.
Public relation
It creates a illusion of honesty .
The audio always sucks. Don't like the environment for interviews.
It's so that Tim Cook can't assault the interviewer.
Cocaine being interviewed by weed...

👌👌👌
🤣😂
😂😂
XDXDXDXD
HBO editor: Its anyways a paid inteview so let Sid from Ice age do it!
the interviewer needs to improve on her "listening face"
why? He could have emailed those responses to her. She wanted to do an interview and get some real responses and instead she had to meet the guy in his giant Apple castle of marble and wooden tables, sit on some really uncomfortable looking stools and hear him read out his corporate manifesto while using Vice's platform to push a message you could have read on the apple website. She's a human being, and honestly i would have been really disappointed if i had an interview like this with Tim. Even surrounded by the kings castle, and all the kings men, he still couldn't have a real conversation about the reality of privacy in the Apple ecosystem versus what they'd like people to think the reality of privacy is.
It’s a sad face. Lol
Especially interviewing the damn CEO of Apple. I’d be all ears. Lol
@@haydenquinn1 I wouldn't be surprised if Tim didn't go into detail on certain topics solely based on her body language. She was signaling boredom, whether it was intentional or not is another matter 😂.
Tim needs to improve his "feeding bullshit" technique, it is not interviewer's fault that she could not keep a straight face
I love Elle’s interview style. She might seem like she’s about to fall asleep at any moment but is actually super sharp and proves it with perfect responses and follow up questions out of nowhere.
This is probably scripted. It's Apple.
If you’re gonna interview the CEO of the largest company on earth, you gotta at least look like you want to be there. I was getting sleepy just watching her..
Surface viewing, she was locked in
thats just her face lol
he's just a nice guy running a small company . . . nothing to see here folks ..
Kim Chi lolol
Idk why this has me dying lol
Largest company on stock market
Hes delusional
It’s just a trillion dollar company
She hit the bong
LOL
omg i got the same thought
Yep especially her lips that lokk like a swallow bee sting
Ate some bars
" We count on the device to be smart for you " that statement tho.
Great questions and answers.
Maybe Elle Reeve is not yet ready for this level of interview. Someone at Vice needs to make more thoughtful decisions about who interviews the CEO of the largest company in the world. Her inexperience showed and created cringeworthy moments at times.
Well I liked your comment on weakness of interviewer but the problem is she cannot pry TIM who agreed for interview and dogging questions is what any politicians or Ceo's would do when his comment will affect stock price of apple
DerfMag azine Im sorry, whats the name of your magazine again?
Amen terrible interview
do you really think Tim agrees to do any type of interview? When you're that big, you avoid as many controversial topics as you can. They most likely put this chick in to interview him knowing it wont affect Tim/apple, or Vice.
Tim crook... Is the most boring dude
She looks like she needs a nap.
She looks like she is high on weed
To be honest I also fall asleep anytime I hear about Apple products. Apple's boss must be even more sleep-inducing.
Xanax
She cute though.
This is what a woman look like without makeup. Welcome to the mornings.
As much as I am android fan, I really like how hardcore Apple is about keeping the privacy of their users.
lol
She did an amazing job, quit talking about her looks. Most of you would be scared to death trying to interview Tim.
the best part of the interview was how dignity he had for the interviewer. That was amazing to me. Im impressed.
Her questions were really good and pointed, and I thought her demeanor was purposeful and threw Tim Cook off guard to not accept or be influenced by a point he makes. Always like listening to Tim and he shows what a talent he is to Apple :)
This was a great interview. One of the best news interviews i've seen in recent times.
This reporter is seconds away from falling asleep 😴
3:39 I love elle's reaction to what he was saying
I love you Tim! But give me back my headphone jack 😘
Harshil Patel please no.
stfu
I genuinely was disappointed that they took it out, but I’m on my 7th month and has not needed to use it once or miss it.
#BRINGBACKTHEJACK
You can get some cheap bluetooth headphones on amazon.....
Curated content? That’s not free open market.....
No it's not, it never was or was supposed to be. The app store is a proprietary market owned by a private company that can set its own rules, and can ban users for breaking those rules.
Wen you go to Wallmart, that’s not a free market either. Every item on the shelves was especially selected by a group of people.
Any store works that way infact. The free market is exhibited in your free choice to not go to that store, and use another, such as the google play store, which is also curated even though google likes to pretend they’re the open platform.
I barely could hear the video because I was laughing so loud reading the comments 😂🤣
This interviewer tho! I felt like I was watching a parody or something every time they showed her. She looks like she’s gonna pass out from boredom at anytime lmao 🤣
Great interview. But was she awake during it?
it's called M A R I J U A N A
2:00 My face when I meet my old aquainted and they talk about their life.
😂😂😂
is she sleepy or bored??
Dunder Mifflin she's high
Both
Bored and high.

Both. Only Steve Ballmer can keep her interested
Worst interviewer ever. She was about to fall asleep any second.
Unoriginal comment ever

@Skisful and yet so irrelevant/rude.
Apple makes so much money on selling devices that it rather not sell ads at this time.
Aaron S its just a matter of time.
That was my thought as well but look at Duck Duck Go, they are not as big as Apple and their stance is towards Privacy. I firmly believe that the value drives the company's culture as well as their business model-not the other way around.
i see
I guess when Apple doesn't make as much money as it does today it'll be forced to sell ads.
Apple was 6 months away from bankruptcy and still didn't use your information to sell ads.
WOW WHAT A TOOL QUOTE IS THAT.
Knowing what you signed up for IS NOT privacy, its called transparency
Do people actually believe anything this guy is saying?
Do people actually believe that Vice News is an actual news organization just relaying the facts?
Haha. The interviewer takes "nerd" to amazing levels😎😁🤔🙂
"nerd"? who even still uses that word today?
1:23 this is hard to look at.....
She does a great job... those fucking glasses are so distracting though...fucking face glasses!
She looks like a young bill gates
Haha
Hahhahahahhahahahah
He said “good to see you” a million times in the first 45 second lollll
I'm actually surprised by the questions that the reporter asked. Actually a very nice piece of reporting, that I didn't expect to see again from Vice.
5:00 Difficult question to answer for Tim... apparent from his fumbling. If Chinese govt forced apple to keep all Chinese data within the iCloud servers located in China, how citizens are protected from snooping by the govt. He uses his statement very carefully: " in most of the cases....." not confidently pitching about the exclusive security of the data. Which clearly means that in some cases your data can be snooped by the third party. Privacy on internet is a myth. No company can provide this... not even Apple.
it is not like they are trying www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2018-09-28/apple-looks-down-on-ads-but-takes-billions-from-google?srnd=premium
Amit Kumar If its properly encrypted and only the user has the key, the data might as well be in the governments building without them being able to read it.
Matthijn Dijkstra and you think a little encryption is going to stop the Chinese government....
Proper encryption yes, that's the entire concept of encryption. Without the key the information is useless and if you give the key enough bits the time it would take to crack one key is too much for any computer or cluster of computers to do at a reasonable time. (As in many many years).
Matthijn Dijkstra I understand all you are trying to say. Cook is making a gamble that whatever the Chinese government can do will take them long enough that they will not do it.
my point is that if that were the case they would not allow Apple to do it. Do you really think they will just have the information without a way to look into it. China represents a 20%+ market if they say Cook give us the information, then Cook gives them the information or they ban Apple from the country the stock crashes and shareholders appoint a new CEO....
I love how Tim put his view on privacy
Imaging taking a selfie with Tim Cook on a Android phone...
So disrespectful 😂
Kainto 🤣
Well.... maybe there are people who don't have money for an iPhone but still would love to have it.
When she said, "but you're the CEO of a trillion dollar company?".....lol that does by principal kinda make him a little harder to trust.
I think she did a great job interviewing, she's very positive and she challenged him with good questions and rebuttals
Great reporter. Right questions to make the comparison on Tim's behavior. Thank you lady.
In this day and age i think its definitely admirable for apple to take a strong stance on privacy and I'm happy about it.
It's hard to believe these companies took the same decision at the same time without some form of common communication.
"liberal democracy "
really makes me think
Everytime I see this interviewer from Vice, i just think of Eeyore from winnie the pooh. Get some normal glasses Gertrude
fucking ayyyyyyyyy dying :)
I love her glasses
LMAO
hahaha right. i find those glasses endearing idk, lmfao i thought that was her name at first.
Yeah dork! Glasses! mouahahahah...
Can we move on now? She often has very interesting question and the Vice point gets across.
Good stuff, in a very limited setting, she did touch a point about Siri that a lot of techies feel like it's happening, but here I hope Apple proves us wrong.
“It’s a bunch of bong” is my new favorite phrase
Looks like someone needs a nap!!!
"It would be a very long list" "you could list it." Interviewer is badass
Since he took over all he has done is raise margins on the same hardware and transitioned the company from one that makes innovative products to one that sells dongles and adapters. Tough questions vice...
iwatch and airpods are awesome though...
but not the iPhones or Macs
People keep parroting this... but where are all the other companies innovative phones and computers? All these companies make the exact same shit, give or minus a few gimmicky features and minor OS differences.
@@quamb what innovation has apple adapted to in the last 5 years? Lack of headphone jacks? Shitty proprietary connections that have to have royalties paid to apple for every product sold? The removal of all ports on a laptop? They might be trend setters but they're still shitty lmao
@@Tigertamer01 Apple got rid of the bottom bezel by bending the screen on both OLED and this year the LCD panel before others.
I feel like she was actually asking the right questions. Good job.
"Hi, good to see you..." 😂
Tim Cook: “I’m a free market guy!” Also Tim Cook: “we curate news and censor apps even if they are popular because that’s what people want!”
That’s free market though, if you own a business should you be banned from saying who can be in the store and at what time?
"We think that what the user wants is someone that does review these apps...that does review the podcasts..."
You're exactly right Tim, but that someone should be THE USER...not YOU.
Nobody spoke about how uncomfortable the chairs were!
I love how prepared the interviewer's questions were. I must say she looks like Eeyore's Daughter I mean that in a light hearten funny way though.
I think Tim Cook is a really fascinating CEO. He seems very humble, but incredibly smart.
Genius!!! That's why he is a CEO
Yeah, I actually like his philosophy on data. I just wish they didn't overprice their products
Every SINGLE comment is about the interviewer and her dazed eyes LMAO
But I commend Apple a lot for their acting on their values with security
I would have burst out laughing if she was interviewing me. 😂😂😂
It starts with Jones then others will follow!
exactly
It started 120 years ago. Try to keep up.
Alright, her face was unfortunate, but she did ask questions I wanted answers to.
I would love to see how Steve Jobs would feel seeing how current Apple is doing stuff
Never seen an interviewer push Tim that way before. Kudos on the Alex Jones questions, awesome video
he speaks like Bill Gates, it's a little bit weird
I really dislike Alex Jones but for Elle Reeve to push on this topic is extremely commendable! It's easy to let your emotions take over and cheer that Alex Jones is gone. But it's important to know exactly why a company would silence an individual. People can claim hate speech, but it's obviously not that simple because Cook wouldn't go into explaining the reason. He simply dodged the question.
Werther's Original what has Alex Jones done that you don't like?
His over emotional venting. The fact he doubles down even if he's wrong, and finally his cherry picking of issues to fit his narrative.
Apple don't even allow pornography on their platform. Nobody is crying a river about that. So why is it suddenly shocking that they don't want somebody to use their service for things like harassing the families of murdered children?
I wouldn't say he dodged the question. He is trying to bring it back to a more general narrative. If you have a consistent horrible and hateful message, they're not going to support that by publishing it through their platform. Alex Jones is just one of the thousands of people that fall into that category. It should be more of a story if he *wasn't* banned, since he's breaking their terms of service and anyone else doing that would have been removed. So, why not him?
Alex Jones went after China that's why
@@benmadgwick8037 Nice narrative, but Alex never even spoke to any families of sandy hook. If they are being harrased its from the media that keep rehashing subjects that alex already rescinded and they do everyone a disservice when they cant acknowledge the appology itself.
Very very good interview indeed; good to see Apple clearly take data privacy very seriously. However, the interviewer seems to be falling asleep - perhaps not the best person to be interviewing such a high-profile interviewee... just a thought.
Steve said it best. If you really care about privacy you'd put the phone down.
Apple better lower them prices.. 😐
@Mohammad Almtab
Yeah I know
Mohammad Almtab I a few years these “premium” phones will not seem like premium and they’ll have no choice to lower the price
She’s sleepy
Tim Cook is so articulate and skilled. Better people person than Steve Jobs. His passion really comes through humbly
The things that Tim Cook says is branding their company. This is a standpoint that sounds pretty good and sells more and more products. At the end of the day, they sell only tech stuff. Which isn't permanent and the moment you bought it you feel that something new is already on the corner and that is something that you need as well.
Apple went to the graveyard with Steve Jobs in 2011
Steve Lion Clearly the money didn’t
Why?
@@VictoriaSobocki Because Apple is cancer.
@@QS1597 because their marketing is still genius
@@VictoriaSobocki their products are not groundbreaking how they used to be, they're just slightly better than the previous model if that
She’s popped some Valium
Apple meaning: We won't sell your data but you need to pay a premium price.
that's an ad, not an interview.
What a wasted opportunity to shine the QC issues on their products.....
like? oh like their phones exploding in peoples pockets causing 3rd degree burns? oh wait thats Samsung.
I bet you they are both trippin on LSD.
Nadir Price yes u see tims eyes its black
This was about the worst interviewer I've ever seen. You're talking to Tim freaking Cook here and you look like you're about to fall asleep.
Apple should have a purchase agreement with their customers stating that they are not open for repairing their products rather than let a customer buy and then later on when the device has a problem (overcharge their customer for repair) due accident or with their so called "apple updates" that makes old phones slower without disclosure to clients they should be notify the effects of their updates so that they would have the choice to upgrade or not and not by force (it would appear as scam). this is going to be challenge for Apple company to sell because if customers are satisfied with the products of their competitors without spending excessively of their money with apple products.
tim cook: the I-Shepard
enjoy your dishwasher brand phone lol
@@sgtsnakeeyes11 My dishwasher still has headphones jack.
Google pixel already removed it and samsung will soon too
@अनमोल सिंह Yeah, if that was true, you would've known that you can take it to the Apple store and depending on the warranty, you can get it fixed. And if it's somehow real, it's most definitely a software issue, and should get fixed when you update the software.
Love you Tim! 🙌🏻
great interview!
*Shakes everyone’s hand “good to see you”

i like elle reeve, nice job and nice interview, keep up the good work and hope to see more interviews from you:)
Shit i was like this interviewer is pretty cute and i scroll down and realize i must have unique taste? Lmfao
I've always been fascinated by the people who are instrumental in Apples success even if I feel like they often have anti consumer business practices.
I've never seen so many liberals/leftists be so pro-corporation in my life. It's like occupy Wall Street never happened.
what specifically are you basing that off of? also, for clarity's sake, it's incorrect to lump liberals and leftists in the same category, in the same vein as it would be to assume a conservative and a right-winger are one in the same.
J. Quayle Higgins
I’m not conservative but I have to agree. Corporations only want one thing and that is more money.
At the beginning of the interview he praises his belief in deregulation and the free market, so “liberal” right?
@J Quayle Higgins
What part of praising free market and limiting regulation is "liberal/leftist". I thought "liberals/leftists" were supposed to be commies and socialists? I love how those words are conservative-speak for the devil these days. Haha.
"Damn socialist free-market hippies and their free-range, artisanal marijuana!" 😂😂
The Clinton years in the 90's? 🤔
Haha @03:09 😂 Both hilarious and disrespectful at the same time.
Tim Cook is probably not used to people falling asleep while he's talking.
That wasn't sleep, she takes long relaxed blinks

I get that Alex Jones can be a clown, but that clip that labels him "Conspiracy Theorist", yet where was he lie in what he had said...?
If you ever thought Vice News couldn’t get any worse well this interview just said “hold my beer”.
