  • ESPN NFL Nation writer Mike Reiss reports the Minnesota Vikings final offer to the New England Patriots was #11, #23, the 2025 first for the #3 overall pick and TWO mid-round selections. The Patriots said no. I respect that Kwesi held the line.

    I don’t think people are giving Quessi or McCarthy enough credit. I think Quessi used Maye as a smoke screen to get JJ. I think he knew the Patriots would get too greedy so offered just enough to make it look like they wanted him to misdirect other teams looking for a QB to get McCarthy without getting their offer accepted. You can’t go 27-1 as a QB and win a championship if you are just average. I don’t care how good your team is. If that was true, owners would just draft game managers and build around them. McCarthy could very well be the best QB in the draft and even become the GOAT. He is a victim of his own success. People see the 27-1 record and have a hard time believing anyone can be that good so say it was the team around him. No way. This guy is elite level and the world will see it soon. He has what Kirk Cousins lacked. Ability to make plays when it matters the most. One of the best 3rd down conversion rates. He’s basically the polar opposite of Cousins. Cousins put up big numbers but lacked the magic to win when it matters the most. JJ puts up modest numbers but does nothing but win.

      I agree with so many things you said. I personally wanted JJ the whole time. However, I think tempering your expectations could be helpful. We don't have to be on the awful hate bandwagon everyone's on for JJ, but we can also acknowledge the risk in his evaluation.
      One thing that isn't true is that you can't win the college title being average. I think you can do that; we just have to hope that wasn't the case. His age should allow him to develop, correct things, and even get a touch more arm talent, size, and athleticism. Personally, I think people are too up in arms over just one first round pick. Even if he was a cheaper version of Kirk that'd still be a win. We can always try again.

  • @RednGone
    @RednGone Před 20 dny +10

    I don't think we need to try to convince ourselves that it was JJ the whole time. It may or Maye not have been. Either way, it doesn't mean the Vikings didn't love JJ, they would not have taken him otherwise. The evidence suggests to me they had Maye rated higher, but it's not settling to grab #2 for WAY less capital. And sometimes your second choice works out better anyway!

    Maye is pretty freaking big for a QB. 6'4" and 239 lbs. Big Ben Roethlisberger was about the same (6'5 240). I wonder if Maye is going to have that same toughness and strength.
    Thinking back on it, Culpepper was 6'4 260
    Byron Leftwich was 6'5 250
    But all three of them had cannons for arms.

Nobody will put us in the Chiefs, Lions, 49ers ect.. class. Darrisaw is a very good player but compared to the 49ers LT he can't play the game. The 49er guy owns the left side. I'm not certain the Vikings would have taken Maye either. Doesn't it just seem like McCarthy was their guy the whole time? It seems like McCarthy was prepared to be a Viking, and it seemed like O'Connell had already developed a really strong relationship with him. It really feels like the Vikings had their eyes set on McCarthy, and maybe they were concerned that the Giants would pick him at 6, or even that the Chargers might at 5, and maybe the Cardinals weren't playing ball because they were set on Marvin Harrison Jr.
    Worked out well with us.

    • @RednGone
      @RednGone Před 20 dny +1

      I think it seems that way because he was indeed a top prospect for them. They did build a relationship with him, but it's possible they did with a couple other guys. There's still a possibility that someone else was rated higher but doesn't mean in any way they don't like JJ.
      The only argument you could make is they panicked and picked a guy they hated in order to satisfy owners or the fans. I really, really don't believe they did that. That doesn't match KOC's thoughtful approach to QB. That would be unfortunate.
