It's alright. It's a slow firing, decent damage single target bolt action rifle basically. It does better against bots than terminid though as terminids just rush you and their evasion and the wonky hitboxes means that it's easy to miss. Also I find that sometimes even the scavengers take 2 hits to kill if you don't get a good hit on them. It's good but definitely NOT the strongest.
Not a great crowd control weapon like the breaker so it takes a bit more to use it well. I'm constantly changing aim style to effectively use it. At most maybe 2 people running in a full lobby unlike the pre nerf breaker, everyone ran it and easy wins.
Well when i unlocked the shotgun it doesn't do diddly i was killed in 3s on Hard i was so disappointed its causing me to have an skill issue it needs an extreme Buff.
after using the punisher after buff and the slugger ( didnt use slugger before patch) i can safely say i prefer the slugger as the armor penetration is just cinsistent and way more useful then the overkill dmg on punisher tho makes for a quick 4 shot charger kill on butt. slugger with its more consistent ammo and penetration is just more yuseful for its class tho bad for sweeping hordes
I do hope they buff the Slugger to go along with the other shotgun buffs. Either fire rate or damage. Even so the real hidden gem of the Slugger is how TIGHT its spread is. More of your shots are going to hit your target and you're effective at longer ranges. You can run rover with it to make up for its RoF when getting swarmed. I like it best paired with a horde clearing support weapon anyway. I've been running Slugger, Laser Cannon, and Rover with Orbital Railcannon and Eagle Airstrike to help my AP toting team mates out with chargers and bile titans. The Stamina Enhancement booster is also surprisingly noticeable (even more if you're running heavy armor/exp res for bots) and will help you create room and shoot in quick succession if you get stuck in a bad spot. And you can reload while you run. You get to have full ammo at the start of every engagement without wasting a single shell.

The slugger is great for creating stagger and armor shred on big boi bots. Stagger really creates the best suppression on certain units.

range and spread on slugger makes it much more useful for automation enemies as well

It's a slug shotgun. It literally has no spread. It shoots a single projectile.

Get better? Lots of peeps running slugger or punisher and auto cannon and doing just fine
