Great interview-love how Simon always energetically talks w/his hands... And Roger-I'm so glad he's back. Wonderful that they're still kicking out records! I've read a lot of comments where people are critical and comparing these tracks, on #PaperGods to the "original" Duran Duran-you can't do that. When a band evolves, they have to evolve in their own way... None of their work should be compared to the "Duran Duran sound". A band evolves, ages, so does their sound, they're way of making music.

+Nina Collins I always go around saying that! Who are these so-called fans. People stick themselves in a time warp with Duran-why? The fact is that the first album has been matched by tonnes of their work, and overtaken by more, "Rio" is a 5 star classic but Duran have done that at least 5 more times, and most of those are a bar ABOVE "Rio"-mostly the noughties-now ones too, and I've always rated "Notorious"-their 80s career best over "Rio" and always will. As for that 1983 "Ragged Tiger" that actually exhibits their most banal single-'Union Of The Snake' and is artistically and weak on an entertainment and quality level, where the singing and the amount of words used is the most interesting thing about it-bar the lovely last track-and their other best song of that year-'Secret Oktober' didn't even get put on it. Every record they've made since that (aside from the covers album-which is still cute and better than most everyone else's feeble attempts) and the weirdo intellectual museum/gallery masquerading as an art record "Medazzaland") has been WAY BETTER than it. So 'The Reflex' is on it, big deal! Why pick that to be hottest No.1? Duran only have hundreds of trackssingles, some b-sides and loads of albums tracks way better. The great Kim Wilde gets this same shit-even worse-with her stuff. That 'Kids' thing she started with-it's only among the few least remarkable things she's ever done. People! Can't get anythingright en masse it seems!

+Deconstructing Annie Because it is. It's boring! Compared to almost anything they've done, it's a meaningless song lacking colour, repetitive in structure and it almost sucks big time as a single, considering all the other things throughout the career that were never allowed to come off albums. I've already said. If that song wasn't from their rose-tinted period-were people act like it was only cool to like them between 1981-1984, then it would be given its just desserts. HOW IS IT that songs a hundred times better than it are treated like rubbish by their so-called fans if this WASN'T the main factor?
Can I think about a BETTER danceable song about what?! You knwo what the hell it means. Well it never comes through-and Si can't even remember and that's its weakness. They've done a cool throbbing wrong song about armageddon called 'Last Day On Earth', tonnes of danceable things that have more meaning than this, and it doesn't matter how addictive the beat is, if the structure doesn't change and the lyrics themslves don't take you anywhere, the song has no atmosphere and sounds stiff and lifeless. Intellectual my arse! It doesn't mean anything, it's almost as bad as one of Tori Amos's offerings about all this ridiuculous mumbo jumbo, only she gets acclaim for it, God knows why! You heard it here-I'll defend most Duran singles, most of which their so-called fans happily moan about, but you will NOT refute this about 'Union'-which has little union and no bite of the title. 'The Union of the snake has yet to wake...'-and it never will if the song keeps going like that! Which it does!

I disagree...1st, I think the first single of Paper Gods, PRESSURE OFF, sounds very DD. As an artist, I realize the value of having a particular look or sound...all kinds of artists, from directors of movies to painters, try VERY hard to achieve this. 2nd...to continue to work within those perameters...the ones that make u recognizable within a few seconds, is actually a GREAT challenge when u are striving to create new work. That's why i think PRESSURE OFF is such a successful track. Many bands have tried to go in a different direction and they almost always lose some of their audience/fans. I WANT to see the visual language Ridley Scott uses in his films, I want to see those stunning signature black and white contrasts in Herb Ritt's photography and I want to hear those unmistakable bass, synth and vocals of Duran Duran. Thats why they are still around. Cyndi Lauper just released a country and western album...WTF? I get wanting to expand as an artist but don't ask me to pay for ur experiments. Know why u have a career.

Disagree with what, I'm having a go at 'Union'; not 'Pressure Off', but as it stands, there's better than that on the new album anyway for singles-'Last Night In The City', 'You Killed Me With Silence', 'Face For Today', 'Butterfly Girl', 'Change The Skyline', and the album's true masterpiece-'What Are The Chances'. Duran have always majored in killer ballads-and typically, most of those are from AFTER their so-called "in" period.

Kyach Distent I'm sorry Kyach...I should of referenced whose post I was responding to...but since I didn't reply directly to ur post...I didn't think I had to. I wasn't disagreeing with ur comments, but Nina Collins, who may have posted this video (?)...where she states "none of their [DD's] work should be compared to the 'DURAN DURAN' sound. A band evolves, ages, so does their sound, their way of making music." I was disagreeing with that. While I agree with most of what she wrote about the evolution of a band...stating that anything new shouldn't be compared to what has become their "sound" is sort of impossible to do. I wouldn't buy an album by Madonna and be happy if it didn't sound like something she would do. It was a response about artistic style.

I've had this album on repeat since I got it, it's absolutely amazing - amazing being an understatement! I really love listening to it with headphones; hearing all the musical elements in (on) each track, and how they all come together, just blows my frickin' mind! No wonder I've been a die-hard Duranie for 30 years:)

All that bull about Duran hitting their peak with "Rio" blah blah blah. "Notorious" was always their 80s career best, and Duran have always been on the money when they experiment, be progressive and be exciting and all their best records are signatures of that, and never really given their proper value. They have made most of their best stuff since 2000, and real fans should NOT be looking to compare this with "All You Need Is Now" album-that one was excellent, yes, but so are many of their others, like the bashed one before that. In fact, if you except the good but not great "Astronaut", they've virtually done three top albums in a row, starting with " Pop Trash" (their most undervalued because no Taylors were on it and 2000 was unforgivingly miserable to class. Yet why should Duran be ashamed of their great past, when overrated bored D Mode, Simple Minds, U2 and all them aren't and they're not even good enough to be albums people!
And what's with all this shit? Duran, unlike most, who either gave up, got thrown away or carried on making abysmal records since their heyday (though the likes of shit Madogga has ALWAYS been abysmal-yes world it's true, deal with it, how can you STILL love that harridan of trash-oh yeah-she still controls you all! Wimps), Duran have consitently made worthwhile and lovely stuff SINCE all the masses of shallow tweenies left them for Bros, New Shits On Block or Take Crap and the rest, and for rap and other bullshit. The real fans hang in there and aren't usually disappointed. Real fans don't moan and criticise, but those fans do seem kind of rare. Equally are those that never EVER criticise the likes of Slagdonna, Dep Mode, Simple Minds, U2, Cure, Madness, Tina Turner and the like over though these are all bloody unimportant generally and I'm being kind!!

Nope. That album was bad with a few good tracks. Paper Frauds was Red Carpet Massacre Part 2. Paper Gods SHOULD'VE been good as the follow-up to the great All You Need Is Now. DD should've known better.
