Lol, my wife made a sticker for the car, most people drive on the right side of the road, in (blank), we drive on what’s left of it. Australian right
They found the one stretch of Michigan road, that had no potholes. That - in of itself, is a miracle...
Bro ! 😆
well that's Alpena, MI Not as much traffic as you would encounter on say I-94 between Detroit to Kazoo.
Have you seen the kind of massive damage an A-10 can sustain? I doubt a Michigan pothole is going to hurt it to badly, unless they had to divert to Illinois!
@@thomasnelson2463 Chicago vs Detroit! This is Jordan's Bulls versus the Bad Boys, all over again!!!
Most likely they pay for some roads to be maintained so that they can lad with less risk of damage.
They landed these A-10s on a highway in Estonia. 10,000 kids went home that day and told their mothers they wanted to be a pilot. Those pilots won a lot of hearts that day.
Probably more kids than from the newest Top Gun. I love the A-10 true brute power and survivability.
I think you mean they told their Dads they wanted to be fighter pilots.
The hype around highway landings is a bit confusing as this is not a new idea. There has long been a stretch of MSR1 in South Korea south of Seoul, where pilots routinely can practice these landings. In fact, the highway is much wider and marked as a runway, while two billboards on the East side of the roadway even shield a landing control tower.
Seoul and other major airports are only 15 minutes away from North Korean fast movers, so the South has been creative in several areas as the first strikes would be against C&C centers and runways. The north also has a tremendous amount of artillery positioned to hammer the south just across the DMZ, another good reason they moved the UN and 8th Army headquarters out of Seoul to further south on the peninsula.
No finer aircraft,
No finer aviators 💪🏼
God Bless the A-10 🙏🏼
About a year ago, I got buzzed by two A-10s while on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. They were headed North toward the mountain ridge. I watched them pulled up as they approached the mountains, and as they crested the ridge, rolled up on their sides, and disappeared down the other side.
One of the coolest unexpected events I ever got to watch! 😃👍
Who doesn't love the A-10? Unless you're the thing it's shooting at.
I, like many people, thought they were ugly, hence the name. They have grown on me and I wouldn't want any other AC over my head in combat, except maybe an AH-64.

You're driving down the highway in Michigan, and you pass one of those signs: "Speed Monitored by Aircraft". Then an A-10 rolls in on final... 😲
Yep while your speeding u see that sign give it the finger and up ahead u see things exploding in front of u only to hear a brrrrrt sound behind u and u glance in the rear view and see a A-10 coming in low and hot to finish the job lol

I'm incredibly proud of the mission Selfridge Air National Guard plays in our Armed Forces! I'm thankful for the men and women that keep the A-10 flying from Selfridge. I enjoy every opportunity I get to see them in action. I was camping outside of Grayling one summer weekend and woke to the screaming of a A-10 followed by a BRAAAP as it practiced runs. Unforgettable experience. Thank you for everything you do to keep us safe.
Outstanding gentlemen, I am proud to be a American especially when I see a military aircraft doin what ya do 👌 best. Thank all of you for your service.
It’s scary enough just driving on Michigan roads with all the broken pavement and potholes, let alone landing a plane on one. Impressive.
Imagine seeing one swoop low overhead as it comes in on approach!
my thoughts exactly. i think you'd be better off landing in a field around my house rather than any highway or road ha.
Aren't aircraft landing gears technically high suspension?
Typical liberal state, try driving the interstate system in Illinois…horrendous.
Gee I wonder where the money goes that was allotted to repair them? 🤔
I'm thinking that section of road got repaved recently just for this reason. Looks brand new.

That differential braking U-turn was amazing to behold. The beast turned on a dime before thundering back into the heavens.
Well done to the pilot! One wrong move to the left or right during takeoff and the trees would really mess up your day, permanently. I noticed he took a big breath of relief after he ascended past the tree line, which must have felt great. Well done indeed!
Where is the justice?! They fly down the highway and get a heroes welcome. I fly down the highway, lose my license and have to do community service.

Just imagine what a few of these could do,out in Ukrainian?
Game over!!
I have no doubt the national guard can find a stretch of highway that’s nice and straight, fix any potholes and then block it off for these landing exercises. I am highly impressed by the skill of the pilot who can land on a relatively narrow stretch of road and keep that puppy right down the centerline.
pretty easy in these types of planes..they were designed to fly easier than civilian planes cause they have to train any ole yo yo to fly them..

IN MY VIEW
The Michigan National Guard conducting highway landings is something I never would have thought about. Makes complete sense. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you for clarifying that the thoughts in your head were your own.
Being able to use highways as landing strips was one of the reasons we have spent so much money developing the interstate highway network. There are requirements for creating an expressway that include using it as a military runway in case of word war 3 invasions.
“Oh I cut the grass, washed the windows, barbecued…..how was your weekend? “…..”I landed a jet on country road 5, did a 180, then took off again”. Pilots have the coolest jobs!
It's work to get to that point.
Lt Rob, United States Airforce Retired.
I was in the U.S. Air Force and jogging on a track around the end of the runway on base when an A-10 came in for a landing. Unlike the roar of other jets, all you heard was the 'whoosh' of air being sucked into those huge turbofans. It was amazing.
That's because it was landing and the engines were likely at idle. If the engines are roaring as it's coming over the fence on final, something has gone amiss.
Whispering Death.
Nice 'n' quiet engines great aircraft even without considering it's armaments.
@T25S40 Actually for the A-10 this is not the case. I learned the hard way when trying to learn to fly this beast in DCS. I kept crashing if something when wrong and I needed go around power. The engines are designed for fuel efficiency and low IR signature. So they are pretty slow to respond. After some googling the proper procedure is to have them around 20-30% power. That way when you land it doesn't take very long for them to spool up to full power.
I love the sound of A-10s
I know there's extensive prep to do this. The pilot made it look too easy. Kudos my fellow Americans!
A truly amazing airplane, long live the A10.
The A-10 along with the B-52 show just how well a aircraft can be built
The -130 and -135 series in all of their many variations have to rank up there, too
Imagine what a squadron of these bad boys could do to a column of Russian armor, in Ukraine.
It wouldn't even be a contest. Ukraine is really proving that if the USA went toe to toe with Russia the entire event would last less than a week. And then Pussin' Putin would go nuclear. We seriously should have listened to Patton!
Cost tax payer too much to deploy. It’s cheaper to just use Javelins.😳 it’s a proven tactic in Ukraine.
Never send a squadron when a sortie can do the job.
@@paulsmith7315 what did Patton say? Im curious
Tbh a Battalion of s-400's would've crushed these A-10s...
I live near an ANG base that had A-10's. I am in the approach corridor so they would fly over my house during flight ops. I worked at that base for a couple of years until most of our aircraft went to Iraq. Never get tired of seeing those A-10's fly over, you can't miss the sound of those engines either. I remember one excercise they did up North, the whole town showed up and local news media covered it. Way cool seeing a jet on the highway.

Hi, neighbor!
That is one of the coolest things ive seen in a while. I heard it was possible but never knew for sure that it was being done.
for lack of anything more original, THAT is very cool. Thanks, Captain and all those supporting you for your service.
Living in Michigan my whole life and being a pilot, this is cool. We see the A10 flying around our cottage often and it is awesome! But I got to say, he landed on the only maintained road in MI, nothing is that good anymore. So smooth, hahaha! Right! “Fix the damn roads” our Governor campaigned on, well one got fixed.
I heard Grenchy was going to fix them all🤣😂😖
I once (long ago) worked maintenance at a golf course on Lake MI up north and got to see these guys fly by at what looked like not much more than bluff height. Absolutely awesome!
Stretchin' Gretchen isn't fixing a damn thing.
Ya'll voted for her and look what you got! That's why we moved outta there in 2006
Impressive. They used a narrow two lane road with banks and trees on both sides that left no room for a margin of error. Well done US forces, that is some superior practice.
I’m sure the homeowner that got to watch the turnaround and the takeoff from his couch was enjoying it.
Well done. ✌️
"narrow two lane road with banks and trees on both sides"... and then called it a highway 😝
(It may be a bit rural to have had any houses close enough to watch that from a couch though)
plenty of clearance or they would not have picked this road. Too bad people can't go and watch this. Think how cool it would be to be that close when they land and hear the engines and all. However, too much of a security risk, I am sure. Now can we see some F-15's landing on a road :)
Pretty cool, and would have been awesome to watch, but this didn’t look overly challenging. There was plenty of clearance, and a longer run space than any actual runway routinely used. The only real challenge here is setting it down really easy so as not to damage our already-fragile roads.
@@haredr6511 ...and I don't think that's a thing at all, a fighter jet weighs a lot less than a loaded 18-wheeler.
@@christopherbedford9897 it’s not the weight. It’s the impact, and the concentrated weight on each small wheel. An 18 wheeler distributes weight over 18 large tires (lots of area), while the A10 does it over only 3 small tires, and it’s no lightweight, particularly when hitting the ground.
Runways, even for light aircraft, are built substantially thicker and stronger than roadways for this reason.
Very cool, I was a navy carrier pilot for 10 years. Got out and almost joined guard in East Granby flying these… decided just to fly commercial and enjoy my days off. Although I think I would have enjoyed flying this beast.

@@nighpaw4651 A 10 has pretty wwii era wings. Great for low speed turning.
@@PerSon-xg3zr true but I meant on the ground
Most (not all) aircraft are equipped with differential braking. If needed, you can hold one wheel locked and pivot on the tire, or just use the drag of a brake to reduce your turn radius.
No room for error. Great piloting!
This is actually one of the main functions of our highways in a time of war. It gives all the aircraft that can a place to land, rearm, and refuel as well as a place for emergencies.
The A-10's were a sight and sound to love everyday as they flew here in Myrtle Beach SC,,, I am sure that lots of folks here miss them.

I was in a UH-1 Huey flying roughly parallel to the aerial gunnery range at Fort Drum, NY in 1984. A pair of A-10s were conducting gunnery practice with the 20 mm rounds. I was in awe of their power and maneuverability. I definitely don’t want to be on the receiving end of those.

I can't remember if it was 1987 or 1988 I got to see that real close I was held at the gate of the gunnery range as they came in to shoot the targets in practice with Huey UH-1 Gunships and First Gen Cobras. I was crewing a Huey in '87 at a West German tank training area for the Allies. We were flying along, with the doors wide open in June. I was hooked into my monkey harness and hanging out the side door watching for fast movers. All of a sudden to our right from behind, at an altitude very close to ours, two French Mirages came screaming by us. I could see the pilots. After I told the pilots about them, and they came past, I saw two A-10 Warthogs come screaming past us chasing the Mirages. The Mirages climbed and did a sweet and slow roll to the left and right to split up. The A-10s followed suit, but when they turned to chase their targets, they flipped both aircraft over on their wings and cut a ribbon in the sky chasing those two French pilots. It was awesome, and they're flying techniques were so different! That was the best part of that ride. At one point, the female co -pilot radioed the tower and said, "We seem to be slightly disoriented...". I thought, BS, you're lost! How could she be lost when the radio freqs' were strapped to her leg? She got a flight slot, but not me...
God I absolutely love that plane! Always wanted to be a pilot but was never physically able to because I’m too tall but if I could’ve this would be the plane I’d want to fly. I built one as a model when I was a kid and I’ve loved that plane ever since.
Yep. If surplus A-10's were for sale, I would have one. Imagine the performance if it were 'de-militarized'; ie, without the cannon. Sure, might require some ballast, but the f-ing cannon and ammo accounts for a significant fraction of the aircraft weight! She's gonna fly much more gooder w/o the cannon and ammo!
@@richardpark3054 I”ve heard it is for sale, but the problem is that the cannon is part of the structural integrity of the plane. I think you can built a structure with the same mounting points as the cannon, and including the ballast, that will work just fine, but you need a ton of money.

Theoretically, an A-10 can land on any straight stretch of highway, as well as roughly prepared airstrips. This exercise is similar to what the Swedish Air Force is doing for its JAS 39 Gripen fighters.
And the Swedes do it all the time!
