  • The German Air Force's Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet intercepted a Russian Su-24MR tactical reconnaissance aircraft near Latvian waters on Saturday (1/6).
The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) shared photos from the event via social media platforms.
A Su-24MR intercepted by a German Typhoon was identified without a flight plan or radio communications. The interception was carried out from Lielvārde Air Base in Latvia, part of NATO's Baltic Air Police mission.
Since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, NATO has intensified its air surveillance missions over the Baltic states.
Germany, which has participated in this mission since 2005, annually contributes to the Reinforcement of the Air Security of the Baltic States for at least four months with a joint deployment contingent, including flying units and support troops.
NATO's Baltic Air Policing Mission, operational since 2004, ensures the integrity of the airspace over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which lack the resources to patrol the skies independently.
The mission serves as a collective and defensive action in peacetime, highlighting NATO's commitment to the security of its member states.
The Su-24MR, is a special reconnaissance variant developed from the Su-24 Fencer tactical bomber.
This variable geometry aircraft is capable of all-weather operations and is equipped with advanced electronic warfare and surveillance systems.
