Broken Hands Broken Dreams: How a Smash Legend Beat Injury to Win Again

- What do you do when the controller you use to play the game you love is literally destroying your body?
What do you do when you’re one of the best in the game, only to be taken down by an injury caused by being the best.
Would you quit? Would you give up and do something else?
Hax refused to give in. He took matters into his own mangled hands and came up with a better way to play.

"To keep himself sane, he started playing League of Legends"
Sounds a little counter-productive if you ask me
Lmfao
As someone who has never played league I am dying of laughing right now.
fun fact someone said that he was so focused on getting his challenger jacket that all he did was play league and get coffee at the starbucks he had near his home
depends if he was playing vayne or garen
@@biggusdickus2166 u didn't get the joke at all m8
It's just so mortifying to think that the amount of cartilage in his hand was smoothened out so hard from overusage that doctors were saying they haven't even seen degradation levels like that before.... Hax's pursuit of movement perfection was inspiring but also a scary story all in all
I like how his break from the game was something less intense by climbing to Challenger as a TF one-trick lol
the doctor didn't say his degeneration levels were bad because of the damage that was already done, what they were referring to by degeneration levels were the poor ergonomics of doing melee movements on the Gamecube controller. The actual state of his hands was bad, but that wasn't what the doctors were talking about in that part of the vid I'm pretty sure. we might be talking about different parts tho idk
@@deddrz2549 Ahh, what I was referring to wasn't in the video but rather like a statement Hax put out a while back on I believe Smashboards
But yeah, man, it's crazy how the ergonomics of the controller were enough to do that to his hands over time.... makes me worried about my own after all these years playing melee
PPMD's medical condition, Hax$ hand injuries, to Reln0 leaving the scene to join the army. The scene would have been so different if many great players were present
Don't forget swag where he got banned despite being exploited in the matchfixing scandal
@@adamismail2883 The legend of SilentSwag?
@@adamismail2883 if you're talking about the counter strike player, nobody was exploited. We never will know the full story, but I fully believe DaZeD and steel when they said everyone agreed to do it and nobody was pushed into doing it.
Relno was not even close to a top player
And now nairo is leaving and everything is blowing out
It's even more crazy when you understand the MASSIVE technical skill demanded by Fox. Mew2king himself has stated that the only reason he plays Marth over Fox is because Fox was way too demanding. And sure Hax$ says that the problems started with Captain Falcon, but those problems will get exacerbated when playing the most technically demanding character.
And the thing is, Mew2King is KNOWN for his technical prowess
Crazy day to upload a smash video
Hand injuries are no joke. Ergonomics are extremely important. Ask any fighting games pro.
tons of pros have terrible ergonomics, so maybe don't ask them lol.
Well that’s why mt dad want me to have all ergonomic stuff
heads up guys, expect more smash content soon. all i can say.
Salem said that melee wasn't part of the smash community, salem was trying to protect melee all along
@@carlosalleyman374 - The hero we needed.
ah shit, here we go.
aw man, don't say that please, goddamit.
Carlos Alleyman only person Salem was protecting was nairo
I used to work in an ice cream shop and developed both arthritis and ulnar nerve damage. For 6 months I couldn't play the games I loved and had to do everything with my non-dominant arm. Being in a condition like that can easily break your mentality. My doctors told me at one point that I would likely never be able to play FPS games ever again. I cried myself to sleep for months. I love gaming and it's my dream to stream full time. I switched to legends of Runeterra because I can play that with my left arm (it's a card game), but it wasn't the same. for the last two years, my arm has slowly been recovering but it's still touch and go sometimes. Luckily, the doctors were wrong and I can now play as long as I'm careful, limit my time playing, and wear an arm brace to keep my wrist aligned. I'm optimistic now, but I can relate to the struggle Hax has been through. Major props to ya buddy, you're a legend for not letting your injury define your career. You were (and still are) a big inspiration to me while recovering. Thank you for showing me that doctors still don't fully understand how injured players can adapt, and that there is always a workaround if you love the game enough!
how did working in an ice cream shop give you hand injury?
@@danielboi1869 always the same wrist movement can cause injury over time, ever heard the term tennis elbow?
Imagine being challenger and league is not even his main game
I guess he is what you call a god gamer forsenE
A good amount of top smashers are challenger actually
wow i love how the way u guys inrtro its like a thrilling movie
It is though
*inrtro" lol
Crazy day to upload a smash video
I think I know what the next Smash story might be unfortunately.
It’s not just the smash community unfortunately
What happened
Pichu 2869 a bunch of pro players were called out for being pedos.
Just Lowkii god damnit it’s Minecraft all over again welp I’m ready to hurt again
Wouldn't be surprised if part of his hand injury was from dittling little boys tbh
Remember seeing Hax for the first time in League spectators
IS THAT THE SSBMHAX?
HES CHALLENGER?!
HES A TWISTED FATE ONE TRICK?!?!?!?!?!
Glad to see him back where hes the happiest
is there anywhere i can find vods/highlights of him? I hadnt gotten into league when he was chally
The fact that he made it work, makes him the best already
Hand starts to break well guess I'll become a league of legend's god
"what do you do when the game you play is literally destroying your body" well as a gymnast i keep breaking it more then complain that my back hurts
Idk what the behind the scene's were between Hax and Smashbox but it probably has to do with hax wanting a design that he knew would be allowed in tournament play and Smashbox probably wanted to market towards the bigger non pro audience with something like "It allows you to do things controller players can't" or whatever and Hax didn't want that, hence fight ensues, causes bad blood and the "betrayal".
Good on Hax for sticking with his dream and the thing that he loved, and making sure he could continue to compete. That's the showing of a true competitor and something everyone loves to see.
From what I remember it pretty much was Hax way or the fuck it I am out. The guy who made the smashbox also made the hitbox and he does try to get it tournament legal and everything. Hax didn't want it to be legal he wanted the credit from when he also did this with the Aduino board project and just released it under his own name as I did know one of the person working on that one.
Edit : Also both of them allows you to do stuff that isn't humanly possible on a gamecube controller due to how button works vs "analog" stick
@@XenoFaith Why would Hax not want it to be legal? Doesn't really make sense.
@@Hai_da I am saying he did it just so he got credit more then anything if based on what he did after that. the problem is the nature of the thing allows you to do things that you can't do on a controller normally
the issue here is that the smashbox is legal practically everywhere. (While b0xx was technically banned at events that use the 1:1 input law like evo)
@@seannolan3927 Like I said he rushed it out to be out first rushed it not because he took time to listen to the community and try to make it legal
All these "gamer gear" companies focus so much on RGB or aesthetics, they never stop to think about the health of the player.
Injury from gaming is as real as injury from any other sport.
A lot of gamers are already unhealthy from the sedentary lifestyle as it is and to add ergonomic injury on top will cut competitive esports athletes' career that much faster.
The mouse and keyboard and the controller, any way you look at it, just isn't healthy for the player. Players had to adapt to subpar hardware for the longest time. Just look at how some of these players grip their controllers in this video and tell me that looks comfortable.
In CSGO, so many pro players play with their keyboard (extended with numpad) sideways because it's just more comfortable than the manufacturer's intended way + the tables they have to play on is just too small (another hardware issue).
Players won't need to contort their body and injure themselves if they had the right hardware to play on.
I agree with you brudda
It seem more comfortable to play sideways but a dictar said that it's is worst for your hands that playing normally.
Yeah I'm wondering why do many pros still have full keyboards, I switched to 65% and I'm not looking back
I just love how Devon calls his hands mangled in the beginning. You might as well have said “he took matters into his own hideously grotesque disgusting hands” lmao
Hey a Kripperino on a Smash video cool
Hax$ pulled a Deku from MHA. If I break my thumbs playing Smash I'll just have to use my fingers next.
In this moment of Smash eSport history, this video is so relieving. Thank you
I've seen firsthand when a team of engineers get stuck in their own design concept and when someone comes in and makes constructive criticism or suggests improvements it hurts their pride and they get upset. It's a bad way to design.
Apparently it wasn't even that, apparently they already started production with their original design so it was about money, meanwhile hax$ came up with his own design and basically said the original design is unusable for smash bros.
@@Godspamit - It's allowed at tourneys because they're a big-time sponsor of majors.
Nice video guys. I've had hand issues since 2017 (an FPL injury in my thumb), and had to give up gaming for over a year. It really had an effect on my mental health, as a big part of my life suddenly was gone. Things are much better now than they were a year ago, and stories like Hax's kept me going through rehabilitation.
Hax$ single handedly made me love competitive SSBM
Hax always been my favorite smash player cause he plays fox so aggressively, respect to him for keeping it up even w the medical condition
i love you hax$
I tore the tendon in my arm pitching in high school. To this day I don't have the ability to throw anything over hand. Respect to him for finding a way to keep playing.
Thank you for not rushing out a video on everything that's been going on. I mean that sincerely.
I actually hurt my thumb, not at the base but at the first knuckle initially. This was predominantly due to such excessive use over the years, starting from age 12 is when I noticed it (I'm 24 now). I remember first noticing it when playing castle crashers all those years ago. Fast forward to age 22/23 I cracked the knuckle (something I've done since I was in like 1st grade with no issues) and I felt something tear. Went to doctor. They said the EXACT same things as Hax's first Doctor. They had me put forward almost 500$ for an MRI only to identify it as an L1 sprain, have me do exercises on it for a few weeks, and ultimately end with a single physical therapy session for 300 bucks - all to then tell me, and I quote: "No need to come back ok." Apparently, according to the Doctors it there were also early signs of arthritis at the base and now I have some pain there as well.
So the overall pain went down, and it isn't chronic. The problem is, there is still some sensitivity there, and even without the pain since Castle Crashers at age 12 I noticed the same thumb has less range of motion than the left. Coupled with the fact I had also asked about my left pinky and ring finger, of which they then identified as an Ulnar issue, they told me to where a volleyball cuff on the thing and take it easy. Take it easy? Doing what? The most I do with my left hand is type\play pc games. To be fair, while the intensity of Melee can't really be reached by a PC game (other than StarCraft) the heavy usage of Ctrl\Shift in most games and applications (I work on a PC all day too) caused some issues here.
So, rambling aside - poor ergonomics caused issues on both hands, right hand from thumb overuse and left hand from pinky
ing\elbow position\use. I can admit this was and is the result of poor ergonomics overall, but the doctor's handling it so poorly have me furious. I'm hoping at some point I'd be able to afford (or even be able to perform) stem cell injections, but until then I've switched to a hyper-ergonomic keyboard (kinesis advantage 2) and attempted using a vertical mouse. Still using the GCN controller but I don't really play melee much nowadays (bout to change with rollback netcode) but we'll see. The doctor had the nerve to joke about "bionics being popular by the time you hit 40". Anyway thanks for coming to my TED talk, early signs of anything are signs enough to warrant treatment. Tired of these doctors who are obviously very well educated and competent pushing things off because they don't understand the nature of RSI, and never did even before esports became a thing.
This is such a great story, thanks for sharing!!
Ah today is my favourite day to look at smash news
Been on twitter seeing all the shit in my own smash community being exposed, and it's all been super sad, but at least we still have HAX FUCKING MONEY BABY
Great video followed hax story for a long time and the guy just love the game so much he didnt stole design all he wanted was to comeback to his favourite game and the hitbox team wasnt helping or doing anything at all to help when hax was trying everything
I always knew the GameCube stock controller was crap, but now this officially reinforces that.
I've had wrist and forearm nerve injuries before and it still affects me to this day all caused by videogames like Smash. I respect Hax$ for what he has done.
Man i wanted more smash content, but not the way its gonna be soon.
We needed this in the time we are in
hax has been and still remains one of if not just my favorite player
got to play him in some friendlies one time and he's still insane on the b0xx
It’s good to see melee rep on the channel :-)
I love the story of Hax$, great video today!
I might not be right, but I feel like hax$'s controller grip may have been bad for his hand.
I watched some of his handcams from years ago though, and especially since he had problems with Falcon before Fox
I just think grip is an important topic to discuss and make guidelines for that hasn't really been explored.
and it's also important to do hand stretches and take breaks
Hax is my hero he fought everything to do the thing he loves 😢😢😢
Hax is like Stephen hawking. Both of them wouldn’t let injuries stop them from doing what they love the most
This is the content I want to see!!
*is clout lord of smash* still buys $30 jackets, My man.
Glad to see videos with production value coming back. Got tired of watching 4 dudes in a zoom call with no script talk and eat dinner on camera.
I love these stories!
As someone who has interviewed Hitbox Dustin before, it sounds like it was more a difference in philosophy. Hax wanted an ergonomic replacement, Hitbox wanted to build the theoretically optimal controller.
I was playing video games for 8 years and I still feel great :)
Oh god the timing on this vid
I expect a Smash controversy video by tomorrow
As someone with progressively worsening hand pain, this is kind of inspiring.
I've had tons of set backs in my life, injuries and boat loads of mental and emotional problems, but it's been myself dream to beat pro gamer for over a decade I'm going to continue trying to achieve my dream, if I need to take a break then I take a break, but still willing to come back and try again
I think this video glosses over just how much time and effort hax put into learning the new control schemes to climb back up near his former levels.
Love your videos
I'm a simple man, I see Daniel in the thumbnail, I click the video. We need more Daniel
Hax. Fucking. Money.
Some say he truly is the melee.
his is probably the greatest esport story
this shows that its not about the setup, the mouse etc.
its just about skill, experience and gamesense
I saw the title and I was so confused then after the opening sentence I was like oh shit it's hax$
he is hands-down the best melee player ever!
pun intended
He's such a legend. So much respect for Aziz
and the disable like myself. had a stroke paralyzed right arm and right leg. gaming was a part of my life since i was 5 years old, it hurts so bad
I had a stroke as well, partially paralyzing the left side of my body. Mine happened before birth. I hope you have found a way to game that works for you
Can you guys do a documentary on Loop? I know he's a twitch streamer, but honesty, I feel like there's alot of people need to know his story and how amazing of a person he is
Hand: No I dont feel so good i think
going creeper aw man myself
bad day to upload a smash video
Win is a bit of a strong word
Hax, the literal god. He's back, and everyone's shaking in their boots.
By the time he came back everyone above him when he left is washed or retired lmfao
Except hbox and kinda mang0
Looking forward to the video on the late Reckful
Smash is such a hard game
I thought this was going to be ppmd but has is also pretty epic
Wow. That custom controller looks amazing to play on. Dayummm How much does that cost?
If memory serves the BOXX is like 200 or 250, they layout is much more ergonomic than the smashbox controller that the hitbox team came up with
Its 200, I got mine a year or so ago, and its honestly become my go to for basicially any game that uses digital inputs because it has native compatibility with pcs
I don't think the controller is that un ergonomic I think they're just playing alot
Hax$ has the most anime storyline ever
I feel this video deep since I'm currently struggling with health issues for several months that make me unable to play the videogames that I always enjoyed and loved, also since the covid19 lockdown, public medical services in my country (Ecuador) are unavailable (unless you're in your deathbed) and I don't have any money left so I can't afford going to a private hospital.
So I'm here looking at the void with my deteriorating health, unemployed, broke, bills pilling up, unable to support my family just waiting for covid19 to take me.
Is there anything I can do for you?
@@pocketblue well, I try to be positive, if it wasn't for covid I would have received proper treatment, and if I wasn't sick I could work and get some money, so in the last couple of weeks I been streaming random games on twitch a few hours a day in my good old pc, since competitive games (I used to play League of legends, Rainbow six siege, cs:go, etc...) make me feel in pain the most, in hope of reaching people willing to share my pain or donate to support me.
My channel is Audi0siave and you can see my condition in a clip called OLV were I tried to play Valorant and during a clutch moment my chest was exploding.
Are you going to cover the sexual abuse coming out of the smash scene?
Probably. It's too much of a story for them to not cover it.
Jesus, I really need a breakdown of what the fuck is going on
hopefully not if they monetize it
Most likely will. Only issue is that there's a lot to cover so they'll need a lot of time if they want to cover all of it. And who knows how many other allegations there are
There so much to cover, they probably have a video out tomorrow the earliest
Lets go more smash :0
the worst possible day to upload smash content
I liked this video before watching it, hax fucking money baby
WE STAN HAX MONEY LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOO

The games that made me stop cause it will kill my hand is bayonetta 1 and melee.
what manga is that in youre background with the red uniform
6:52 oh man N NTENDO is too picky about copyright I see
I've never clicked on a video super duper fast before.
controllers are causing pain a lot especially by the joystick, i wonder why it still exists with such risk
also liked the animation thescore
Well cuz it’s designed to be for casual players, most people don’t go pro with controllers/joysticks
are u guys gonna cover the stuff about offline tv ?
i havent watched the vid but what if he plays with his feet
I hope you guys working on a tribute video of Reckful
Rip legend.
more melee please!
I play melee and I still believe that ergonomic is important
Please, do a video on "The Legend", aka as Reckful . . .
I have an injured hand too
But I won't give up on my dreams
He was a challenger in LoL PogChamp.
Scott Pilgrim Nice
I suffer from peripheral neuropathy and Raynauds syndrome. This has deteriorated my nerves and whenever I pick up a controller, I lose all feeling in my finger tips. It becomes physically painful to play video games. I look up to hax a lot because of our similarities. Unfortunately, I don’t suffer from a wrist injury, so there isn’t much hope and I’m expected to lose feeling in my fingers in a few years
