    Thank you for the kind words. Writing "Call of the Runes" was a labor of love, and it means a lot that it now finds its way into the hands of people who enjoy it. Also as always a great video from start to finish.

    I would also recommend Dan Coultas books 'Heathenry and the Sea' and 'The Gods Own County' which is great for people who are looking for prayers/ ideas for writing your own! 😊

    I recommend The Valkyries' Loom by Michele Hayeur Smith! I researched the connection between Late Iron Age women, seidr, and textiles for my senior capstone project and frequently cited this book. As someone who has felt a connection with textile production, I wanted to find ways to incorporate that into my practice and this book (and other academic articles) have provided me with ideas on how to do so, based on archaeological evidence. I also recommend the Myths of the Runestone by David M Krueger because of how he addresses the beliefs around the runestone in Minnesota and why they are problematic, but in an easy-to-read way. He lists reasons as to why people believed/believes that the runestone was/is real and then provides the evidence disproving the authenticity of the runestone in a non-aggressive manner. A good starting point for building critical thinking skills for those not used to academic readings. Kinda niche since it talks about the lives of 19th and 20th Scandinavian immigrants in the US and their descendants, but I think people should read it since people seem to enjoy talking about how Vikings spent time in Northern America.

    I have been working through the Road to Hel for that past couple weeks. It is really enjoyable so far for such an academic work. I have been adding some of these into my Amazon cart as the video progresses. If there were affiliate links I would definitely use them.

    Some other books I'd recommend for beginners.... Asatru for Beginners by Mathias Nordvig (a scholar and academic from Denmark but also a practicing heathen). Also Our Troth Volume 1: Heathen History, Volume 2: Heathen Gods and Volume 3: Heathen Life. These 3 are the latest editions (there were older volumes you can find but these new ones were published in 2020-22 and have lots of up to date information on practicing heathenry. For Runes, its worth getting "Rudiments of Runelore" by Stephen Pollington who is a scholar too (and his book includes the archaeology and rune poems).

    Wonderful collection! I agree about Gaiman. I always recommend it to anyone who says they are interested in following a Norse path, but don't really know anything about it. It is a wonderful, fun and easy way to learn the basics of Norse mythology before making any commitments to something heavier! I also love Iceland Magic and Vegvisir, both by C.A. Smith, Lost Teachings of the Runes, by Ingrid Kincaid, A Modern Guide to Heathenry, by Galina Krasskova, Icelandic Plant Magic, by Albert Bjorn and Trollrun by Nicholaj de Mattos Friswold, among so many others!! xx

      I am given to understand that Galina Krasskova sympathizes with volkish racists, if she isn't one herself.

    Neil Gaimans norse mythology book is so amazing and I will and continue to recommend this to people new to norse mythology of just learning.
    No it's not accurate, but I think jumping straight into the poems and norse religion study books can be informative but very very tedious and I think having a fun book can help people find these gods are so interesting and cool.
    Not that the poems make them not cool just that I know from an Americans outdated-school-system perspective that reading study papers and historical books aren't exactly made to be "fun".
    Also i have horrible attention span.

    Yeah, I'll check out 'The Road to Hel', thanks for the great recommendations. My first book I read when getting in Norse Paganism was Freya Aswynn's 'Runes & Feminine Powers Northern Mysteries & Magick' For Clarification It isn't an endorsement since she can be problematic. It was just the First book I was exposed to. I appreciate the research and efforts you have put in to give great recommendations.

    Love your list! Also, a question or maybe video idea: how do you go about studying Norse mythology and practice? I read stuff about it but feel like I always forget too much too quickly. And simply writing stuff down just doesn't give me a good overview, either. Maybe this is just a personal problem, but do you have like a specific system according to which you study or keep information?

      I'd look up study techniques and try to figure out what sense you engage with the most for learning :) there are tests online if you Google them, and tons of study technique videos from folks in college/uni.

    This video might end up being pretty dangerous for my book budget! Have you come across any good books on Scandinavian folk traditions? I’m over in Canada but I’ve got some Norwegian and Swedish ancestry so I’m interested in learning more about their folk traditions. I know pre-Christianisation information will probably be hard to come by.

    • @TheNorseWitch
      @TheNorseWitch  Před rokem +1

      There are basically only two books on Scandinavian folk magic… Trolldom by Johannes Björn Gårdbäck and Svartkonstböcker by Thomas K. Johnson. But there are lots of books on scandinavian folklore out there ☺️
