I agree. Hangetsu is a very important kata and often overlooked for the flashy kata.

I absolutely agree that the flashy Katas take the stage for most people but then again once you get older you start to look for other ways of training and that's when you discover the beauty and multitude in the art - as long as you are still stuck on the competition you limit yourself. thank you for your comment and for participating in the communication. oss

Hangetsu is a great kata. I study goju ryu and shotokan so I will share this on my Facebook page. "Breath is Power".

Very good explanation Sensei. Hangetsu, if it is well done, is one of the most difficult katas. Thanks for sharing

It's a concentration kata. If you do it correctly, you're essentially winding your body up like a spring. It's actually a beautiful kata, if done properly. I agree in that it's sadly overlooked by a lot of practitioners. It's by no means flashy, but there's a lot to learn from studying it. If you were only going to practice two kata anymore, a compelling case could be made for Kwanku ( Kanku Dai) and Hangetsu.

Yes some great points. I feel it is more similar to goju, sanchin. I do tai chi and there's no tension in forms so I don't think this kata is similar in that respect, or alot of the movements. I think where this kata differs from other shotokan Kata is the fact it does emphasise deep breathing and squeezing inward, but in a more higher stance, similar to our Okinawan roots which make this a special link to old karate. But don't get me wrong, many health aspects and certainly given me lots to think about here.

Please dont think there are only three ways of breathing. Google breathing. It is ,if you want , an art of its own.

Hi. I do Seisan. I feel the same way about it as you do about Hangetsu. They are really the same in my opinion. I’ve done a very extensive comparative study of all the different variations and made many friends because of it! I don’t have one yet for Shotokan. I’d love your input! Great video. You cover so many things that I’ve discovered as well. I also practice Kyusho. It’s all an exploration of Ki/energy. I think you’re right. For example, the stances all have a specific element/energy principle.

I am considering a second part to this video - those videos are just so much work and as soon as you forget something, make a mistake or just anything people are all over you bashing you... Anyway, something will be coming hopefully still this year. Thank you for subscribing to the channel so I know that there is interest.

@@karatecoaching I’ve been bashed. I’ve changed my name. I’ve taken time off from filming. I haven’t stopped the journey. So thanks for all that you do! I feel your work is priceless and timeless. It’s here for generations to see. I have to put things down to take a break sometimes but return always. I was told a little story once that came from a Wing Chun master who said Wing Chun(or any system for that matter) can be stored in the closet (like a coat during the warmer seasons) and brought out during the winter.

Well done indeed! A rigorous and comprehensive presentation of you knowledge which is deep. I am very grateful as I chose Hangetsu for my San Dan test. Could you give us a demonstration as well as an explanation of the three breathing methods? I will greatly appreciate this sensei as I prepare for Yon Dan. Ussss!

That's my pick-me-up kata. The breathing is always there, modern shotokan just doesn't advocate to vocalize it. Check Kanazawa's early version if you haven't seen. He incorporated deep breathing & tanden tightening.

    Thanks for this video.
I have interest in the study of this special kata for my Nidan exam.
But i have 2 mains difficulties with it :
    - the Way to performe Well contration/décontraction
    - the proper way to breath
So i am really interested in a futur vidéo for the breathing.
    Best regards.

Dear Stuart thank you for commenting - If there is enough interest I will make a second video (and third) about Hangetsu - the problem is always trying to keep the video short because if it's longer than 30 seconds it blows most viewer's minds. So I had to leave certain things, thoughts, ideas, and examples out. Anyway, I might make a second part - those videos are just a LOT of work believe it or not. Thank you for watching and sharing. The Hangetsu stance,
with toes pointed slightly in , grip the floor.
    A hidden kata indeed.
All other stances are horribly impracticle and rarely used in their
    Kata form for fighting.
From the Hungetsu stance ,( legs shoulder width appart ,knees slightly bent)
you have maximum hip rotatation in both directions.
Stand now with both feet straight and try hip rotation. Restricted.
Feet turned in ( you'll feel it )
Push out at the knees to grip the ground.
Speed and power come from your ability
    to snap the hip forward
    . The stance gives best
rotatation for a wider attack/ defence pattern.
Predominately for hand strikes but applicable to kicking.

There is a reason why this Kata shows up (with modifications and changes) in many other styles. So I very much agree with what you say. Oss
