The latest Volkswagen Golf GTI is a lesson to other hot hatch makers in design, build quality and image. Factor in impressive performance and genuine day-to-day practicality, and it's no wonder the famous GTI badge still proves so popular. It's available as a three or five-door hatchback, and is based on the standard Golf. The GTI has recently faced tough competition in the form of the Renaultsport Megane 265 and Ford Focus ST. The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine has 207bhp in standard guise, while the limited-run Edition 35 comes with 232bhp, although that's not as much power as the Megane or Focus. Performance is strong and the handling sporty, but it's more comfortable than its rivals and boasts a high-quality interior.
So funny to see matt from back then
Captain_Coleslaw lmao yeah
That is Matt's nice brother
Oooo I was like I know this guy 😂
I’m from the future
never judge a GTI with stock power. The .2.0 tsi engine in the GTi is severely under tuned and just requires a 600 dollar ecu flash to tune it to an additional 50hp and 75Ib/ft of torque. Then it will keep pace with a focus st and also have the much better interior and ride quality.
am i the only one who love flat bottom steering wheel
Same on GTD
Mindo nope me too👍🏼
no me too😁
Me too
I love flat bottom steering wheel
I bought a 2010 GTI new and I don't think I'll ever sell it.
Best GTI out.
That's a very nice summery of the Golf GTI at the end (including the current mk7). Yes you can get hot hatches with more power for the same amount of money (if not less). Yes the Golf looks bland compared to its rivals. But the point of the Golf GTI is that it has all the power you need for every day use. It can be quiet and comfortable if you drive it slow around town. But if you take it to a A or B road then it has all the power you need to put a smile on your face around the bends and overtake with ease.
Really you only need the extra power from a Ford ST or Civic Type R if you're on a track. In the real world you won't be able to go much faster than the GTI and you're be paying a lot more for petrol for it.
QullVideo Thank you! Finally someone who shares my view down to the tee! I have always use this debate with my mates who have hot hatches and I have always expressed this view to them.... hence why I've just bought one 😊

If there's one thing I've learned about fast Vauxhalls, it is that although they come with very powerful engines that propel them at high speeds, everything else on the car makes them pretty much undriveable. No thanks, the GTI is the car to go for.
I’m 13 and I want this as my first car
im 19 and want this as my first car
This channel NEVER gets old!
Matt you are uncannily good at car reviews. In my top three with Chris Harris and of course Clarkson, in no particular order. You all have something unique to bring to the viewer!
Look at him now
Sometimes it's what you don't do that stands out. The Golf/GTI doesn't drastically change its design with each model. It's a car you look at from a distance and you immediately know what it is. It's beautiful in that it stands out without trying to stand out. Very few cars are that distinguishable without making outlandish designs. It's a mature looking car with a great history and is still top of its class by sticking to its roots.
I love the golf its amazing car to drive, its not about hitting 0-62 mph in warp speed what most people buy cars for,its about the driving experience+build quality!
Wait until u see what’s happened in 11 years!!
@@sirmemesalot69haha 😂11 years ago I put that on CZcams lol
@@BigRLH yeah, was wondering if you’d reply 😀
Sorry this isn't the MK7. That's not out until next year and we filmed this a few months back seeing as so many people had asked for it. I thought this would tide you over until I get my hands on the MK7... and when I do I'll ensure I get the model with the performance pack and therefore the LSD. Until then.... go to the autoexpress YT channel to see my report on the new MK7 from the Paris Motor Show. Speak soon - Mat ;-)
Golf GTI is the best!! I have a review of the 2013 GTI check my channel
I am 49 years old and I have A DSG GTI Edition 35 and every single milimetre of it is excellent. Although I must admit I don't like the rims in Matt's review car. The 18" Watkins Glenn alloys on my car look much more grown up than the 19" Glendales on display here
Love the style of the this Mk6. I honestly think it's difficult to really justify spending the extra cash getting the new Mk7 when it comes out. Any extra power to be desired, or even a mechanical LSD, can be had in the aftermarket.
Very good review. All the information that you need in a short video.👍
I drive a 2011 mk6 gti 6 speed manual love this little hatch
Could have been interesting to compare the VW Scirocco vs. Golf GTI.
VW GTI and GOLFs are nice cars, I wish they were a little wider. However, the maintenance is also expensive. I almost bought the GTI. The sales manager said' "I give it to you for ZERO INTEREST and the first payment will be after 90 DAYS." I am still thinking about it.
I own a GTI Edition 35, only mine is red. Love it!
I wanna buy one!
Did You have some big problems with it and would You recomend it to me? If so what should i keep an eye at?!
@@karlomatkovic2771 Yes. Several problems. Don’t buy Mk6, go for the Mk7. I did, no problems what so ever.
@@zzzzero11 i found an R type VW6 and 4x4 and i think i will go with him and we will see how it goes
OMG!!! I love this car so muuuuchhh......! VW is the BEST!!!
GTI any day. It is considerably quicker (more power and torque), has nicer interior and exterior, etc. etc. Plus it is turbocharged, which is always fun ;)
I have a Mk5 classic styling the only downside is 32mpg premium unleaded but it is a GTI
Love mine and I luckily have those rims on it. Brilliant car.
love the GTI but I love the DSG sound even more ! that's why I bought one , nice video btw
hello what year is your dsg? and how feels it driving it ,and consume in city
@@justforfun4151 hey mine is a 2012 GTI , the Bangs between the Gears are amazing , and the fule consumption in the City is like 8-9 Liter ✌🏼
@@MehdisGarage thats nice but i was interested for an automatic ,becouse i cant drive manual ahah.thats good consume
The "box shape" means it is practical, good head room and boot space. This is the core of any hatchback, practicality
Yessss! Finally my car!
they are good, I own own one. but the big bumper mk2 gti was the cream of the crop. by far.
Us who are older than the younger "kids" the GTI is hands down the best hot hatch around, at least in the states. I just traded off my 2012 CC for a Ram truck. I always enjoyed my 3 GTIs. My 86' 8V, my 92 16V and 02 1.8T. Wish I could afford a new one along with my truck
were can i get those wheels?
7 years on lads .. do they hold up ? Are they a good car ? Thinking of buying one
I have a 2011 model never had an issue. Driving it like it's meant to be driven. Up the wall. And still starts on a dime. Feels much much faster than when I bought it. Tuned it to stage 2. Upgraded exhaust and diverter valve by choice. Still feels like the day I bought it. Sitting at 140 000km. It's never seen a mechanic.
And did I mention I will never sell it as I am in love with it. No one will ever change my mind and some haters have tried.
Wade Norton thanks for your reply , definitely will consider, I’m just worried about mileage on them
@@alanconnolly2777 if you find an owner that looked after it mileage shouldn't be a problem. The motors are pretty strong. The only issues It can really have is Cam chain tensioner. Intake manifold. Or waterpump leak. Seldom though
Wade Norton thank again.. the hunt is on so 😊
the satnav / screen in this car ... what is the official one called supplied by VW ? thanks
Nice presentation pal
By the way, what watch are you wearing?
Your watch look very stunning.
Mat Watson: (does the head and legroom test, gives a thumbs up)
Yooka: (gives a thumbs down)
Also Yooka: (says nothing)
Laylee: (watches in disbelief)

Mk5 r32 mk6 gti & the golf r 7.5 best golf’s ever made had all of em in the past and I’m now looking for another mk6 gti asi missed it that much
I had a this gti which I gave to the Mrs and bought an a45, am just so glad I didn't sell it cause I miss it! Am going to sell the a45 take back my beloved gti and buy the Mrs something else! I will miss the a45 for its looks and it's grip, But I will have my gti! :)
It's weird, I can't stand the tartan coloured seats, I think they make the car look cheap.
Oh yes just to make it clear, the 19" Glendale alloys on Matt's review are an optional extra. The much nicer 18" Watkins Glen alloys are the standard offering.
Do a review on the c63
Finally. Someone else who agrees with me
I can't wait to see the new GTI MK7 its gonna be awesome.
I've got a Golf like this one, only mine's red.
Still have it?
@@thedon6245 Nah. Mk7 Gti nowdays
@@zzzzero11 my guy replied 6 years later 😂
A Hot hatch for grown ups,you summed it up perfectly
Looks great and love them wheels as I'm a GTI fan and MK1 owner!
Checkout Matt's review on MK8 from Carwow. He DOESNT age.
Coupe GTI is awesome! My brother had the 2010 coupe GTI. Awesome car...
Amazing interior for a hot hatch.
The back lights and accents of this car look different..and nicer than the US one..is this a special edition GTI or something?
its a edition 35, special edition. The taillights are an option in the EU, tho most have the nice r style ones.
Put a k04 in these things and this car is quite a force to be reckon with
love this car
After seeing what the mk7 version looks like, I don't think I will be upgrading from the mk6. Aside from the rims, it's a good looking car.
The new GTI is out now, it wasn't out when they filmed this.
Love the VW GTI , now my sister has one , she loves it. This version is called Autobahn here in the US , but I like the regular with the cloth seats and the other rounded sports wheels.
I have to admit , I think the R is not as exciting as it was ,when it had the 6cyl and 4-motion
Thank´s for all your reviews , I´m not in the market for a car ,but I watch all your videos
Should i buy this car or Hyundai Coupé - 2.7i V6 Style
Maarten Dp this, for a nice v6 car get a4
how many kw of power does it have
Really nice car the Golf Mk.6, it's true that the power that it produces is nothing spectacular but it's enough to put a smile on your face. In terms of design for me this one looks better than an ST for example, especially in the interior.
I think this one looks quite nice, a lot better than the latest Mk7!
How about the mark 7 gti tcr or the 8 gti now
@@othmanmanfalouti6919still like the look of Mk6 imho
Are you the guy from carwow?
Yea
Strange you say that because for many years that is one thing I've noticed about German cars, they don't drastically change between generations.
Waiting for the mark VII to come out next year 230horses under the hood!
CB, any possibility to review the GTD also ? I would be very curious to get your impressions of it. Nice regards :-)
And he moved the steering wheel to the front passenger side.lol
that's why it's the best HotHatch b'cause it's liveable & practically U can use it everyday...
Carbuyer! The new GTI will come out around may or june! Please do a review of it then, thanks :)
Main reason to look at the car was the plaid seats.
Not a boy racer, for a more mature audience. Whatever helps you helps you sleep at night Matt.
carbuyer still too late for the new Golf VII GTI?
Love your review.
So,where do you see the difference between this and mk 5??
ABOUT DAMN TIME
good point, but people are still buying used cars and these reviews come in handy.
Not a track car but a nice drive with a decent turn of speed on A/B roads. There again, on the roads I go on, there is always a truck ahead.
This is going to be my first car. It is very reliable. It looks good too. =)
Well did you. Buy it?
Yeah. Any tips?
i love this car :)
I like your watch. What kind is it?
Why now? Arent't the next generation Golf and GTI about to come to the market?
i love those euro-spec tail lights, dont have the leds in america
Who’s watching in 2021
Wait what? Mat? CarWow mat?? OMG
Same style too
someone came for StraightPipes videos viewing how mat grew past the year?
Same here hahhaaha
you're going to make a review of the new Jaguar F-Type??
Is this good first car for a 17 year old I can't diced out of the BMW 1 series or golf gti
Should I get this car or a Honda civic SI?
i like the watch he has, anyone knows what brand/model it is?
Will you be reviewing the new mk 7 gti ?
That won't be as soon you see the standard version on the road. Then it becomes it bit boring and when you see you the GTI you can probarbly appreciate the looks of it because it's a little bit more exciting to look at (:
Is this car still reliable in 2023 for daily drive?
No it’s not. Buy a mk7 instead
This car just got launch here in my country. And it is sweet. really nice car to have.
Just gonna save my money for this. haha. quite expensive.
Is this a good first car for 17 year old
I pay like $175/month for full coverage on an 07 gti and I'm 20...that's in the US though.
Normal mk6 gti does 0/62 in 6.8 the the 35 year edition did 0/62 in 6.6
golf 6 gti does it in 6.3 moron own 1 myself dont talk bullshit over the internet .
edin cirkic
Volkswagen says 6.9 but in reality it is around 6.3. They say it puts out 200 h.p but its more like 230 :)
Nitrotech23
I have a 2010 Carbon Metallic GTI
golf 6 gti has 210 hp :P
Yeah, you make a good point. Its not really flashy but it gets you some where. =)
I sense a new octavia vRS coming, which I would rather buy as it will most likely be cheaper with same parts.
The Alfa Giulietta QV Cloverleaf is also a rival for the GTI and should have had mention...
It's faster and looks better in my opinion, especially if you want some Italian passion.
I would take the top of the range i30, full of kit, great design, excellent build quality and more up to date, just my humble opinion :))
the Subaru wrx was my first option.... but the insurance is ridiculous on those things, so the gti imho is a much better deal. plus aftermarket on the gti is pretty substantial.
I went from a gti to a wrx and I love both cars. In the end I miss my gti dearly :(
Young matt watson😂
This might be useful for those searching for used deals though
Yeah-- nice car but Mk7 looks worth the wait. The ST is just as practical (more so if you consider it only comes in 5 door) and has a LOT more power as well as it's just as posh on the road. Get the ST in a sane color and it doesn't look anymore silly than a golf wearing 18" rims...
I want to see the new R...hopefully the AWD will put it 0-60 in 5.something,i love VW but ms3,wrx,come AWD bigger turbo and 260+ hp from factory
This is like Mat pretending to be Tiff Nedell
