A gamekeeper in Nottinghamshire received a suspended jail sentence and £1000 fine on 28 January 2022 after a remote camera installed by the RSPB caught him brutally killing two buzzards in a trap.
The shocking footage, recorded in January 2021, shows the man entering a large crow cage trap, containing a buzzard, and beating the bird to death. He returns the next day and kills a second buzzard in the same way.
All wild birds are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1989.
After an investigation by Nottinghamshire Police, John Orrey (63) pleaded guilty to all charges.
These traps can be used legally to control crows under license, but they are also being used on some gamebird shoots to illegally kill birds of prey. The RSPB is urging for better regulation of the shooting industry and of these traps.
The trap was initially reported to the RSPB by a member of the public. If you find a trap like this with a buzzard inside, do not release it or interfere with the trap but email the RSPB asap on: crime@rspb.org.uk. Take photos if possible. Thank you.
