- We will look at how to grow Japanese Maples from seed. We will look at how to get the best method for growing Japanese Maple seed. I have found this method to give me the highest germination rate. We will go over seed collection, chilling requirement, growing media, watering, and how to care for seeds that are germinating.

Thank soo much for explaining so well the procedure how plant the seeds. Very informative and easy to understand. Thank you again. The Lord bless you.☺️
Nydia,. Thank you for the kind words and happy gardening!
Sounds good, thank you
A very informative video thanks very much, please could you tell me your compost mix for potting up the seedlings and how you grow them on. Many thanks Dan
Dan, Great question. I use 100% pine bark. I then place them under a 50% shade cloth once the seeds germinate. I usually leave them there for the first growing season then plant in an appropriate spot.
I like your video's.....thank you
I really enjoyed your video, thanks for making it. I like plant propagation and especially Japanese Maples. I liked everything you were saying until you said you'd be throwing most of the seedlings away and I immediately wished I was your neighbor to offer to take all the seedlings you would cast off. I like your Hydrogen Peroxide method and plan to use it in future. Thanks again :)
Thanks for the kind words Alan.
@@Dr.Warren There are probably many people on ebay who would love to buy those seedlings.
@@BSGSV I've considered it.
Hey Plant Doctor! How about a follow up to this video showing your success, and what to do next? I didn't see a follow up in your feed so I thought I'd ask about one here. Thanks!
I gave a lot of those seedlings away because they didn't have characteristics that I thought I could use to create a new cultivar. Let me poke around in the backyard nursery. I think I have a few left. I love this video idea. It's always good to get ideas from someone else. I get in a rut sometimes being creative.
@@Dr.Warren Sounds good, man! I'd love to see how they progressed.
Is it okay to put the seeds into the substrate and cells, and place the tray in the refrigerator for the cold period? Then remove seeds to germinate.
I like the idea. I'm not 100% it would work but don't see why it wouldn't as long as you sterilize your substrate with something like peroxide.
You said you will pick the best one(s) to keep after a few months growth. Do you then graft this seedling onto a generic acer palmatum rootstock or is that not necessary? I've heard cultivars are grafted for 2 reasons: 1, to maintain the cultivar traits (it's a clone), and 2, to provide the cultivar a stronger root system because the roots of a cultivar are more likely less vigorous. I understand the cloning aspect, but do cultivars always in general have inferior root systems? If you are growing a seedling from cultivar parents, does the seedling need to be grafted or can it grow just as well on its own root system?
You are correct about the reasons we graft. If I have a seedling that I think is worthy as trying to introduce as a new cultivar I would graft it.
Thanks for the info I will try it. I just pulled the seeds out of the refer so I will do what you just did and keep my fingers crossed. Do the seeds sometimes turn into the mother plant ?
There will be a strong resemblance with a large amount of the progeny. Some will look very different.
I know this video goes a bit back, but how about summer temperatures?, I have had success with seedlings, but yet to accomplish anything from seed.
Well deserved follow, thanks!
I would keep seedlings under a shade cloth in summer. Even cultivars that can take full sun.
Thank you for the prompt answer 🙂
As far as the stratification goes, adding the Water Peroxide mix should work to spray the paper towel for the seeds going into the fridge, no?….
Curious how deeply you planted the seeds. It looks like the wing is still out of the soil, so not too deep. I’m going to try growing seedlings this year. Thanks in advance!
You just want to cover them. No need to go deep. A half inch is good enough.
That's what she said @@Dr.Warren
@@Dragon_Shogun 🤣🤣🤣
All the things I have read and watched on CZcams says that your supposed to put the seeds in a bag along with moist dirt or peat moss for a period of time. I have done that, and it just turned out a mushy mess. So, you can just put them in a dry paper towel and put in the frig? I like that a lot better.
That's what I do and it works. Sometimes I might squirt a dab of copper sulfate on the paper towel to help keep fungus from popping up on them.
@@Dr.Warren One more question...if I put just the seeds in a bag like your doing do I need to wet the seeds with water to keep them moist?
I bought Japanese maple seeds on line with no instructions. I live in Alabama also and not sure what to do with them; it is July. Should I keep them in the little plastic bags they came in until winter and than put in the refrigerator, or can I go ahead a put them in the refrigerator and then take them out in spring? Help.
Go ahead and stick them in the fridge. You can start them indoors Jan -feb and put them outside in April.
If you pick the seeds here in alabama in middle of October they are red still. Is it ok to pick them and then let them turn brown and then germinate them? Im seeing anothrr video where 2 or 3 guys are just pulling lots of them off a tree with red leaves and shrinking them in a bed of dirt. Then they cover it with 2 inches of soil.
You could but my gut feeling tells me your germination rate isn't going to be as good.
Did you have something in the spray bottle before you put the H202 in it because it looked like it turned brown a little….. just want to make sure I’m not missing a step
Sorry for the delay. I'm not sure how I missed your question. Yes, but it had nothing to do with what is in this video. I had used that bottle to mix up some humic extract and I probably didn't rinse it out as well as I should have
I picked fresh seeds off my green japanese maple tree today in the SF Bay Area. I'd like to know if I could just stick them in the ground to get them to germinate. Or do I put them in the refrigerator to cool for 5 weeks and then plant them this year Or, do I have to wait till next year to plant them? Thank you for your answer
It's best to chill them first to simulate winter. You will get better germination rates doing it this way.
Can you do a show on your grafting technics of Japanese maples please. Thanks.
See below already did it. Thank you for the question. Here to help where I can.

I also have rootstock if you need it. Allthough it may not be economical to ship if you don't live close to NE Alabama.
What do I do once I see leaves, still leave the top of the Jiffy lid on ,or remove?
I usually remove the lid after they leaf past the cotyledon stage
Can you use H202 as a daily watering for better plant growth. Or is it only good for germinating.
Excellent question!! Off the top of my head I am not sure. Let me dig around and see if I can find some peer review.
Here are some thoughts on H2O2 garden usage : czcams.com/video/J-5l8PebbpU/video.html
Someone told me that you can't just pick the seeds off a JM tree. You must wait till the seeds fall off the tree. Is that correct? Today is May 15th in Atlanta can I plant the seeds now after being in the refrigerator for 6 weeks?
If the Samaras are completely dried out you could technically pick them off and be ok. I think you should be ok trying to plant now.
@@Dr.Warren thanks so much for your help
Don't wanna go below freezing? Why
There is a sweet spot with maximum germination percentage and Temp. The data suggests around 40* is ideal. +/- that and germination rates decrease.
What percentage / strength peroxide please
Great question. It's standard off the shelf (in the States at least) 3% H2O2. I know some places have 6% solution and with seeds that would be ok as well.
@@Dr.Warren Use a Tbsp Peroxide 3% to a cup of water. Soak seeds for couple hours then plant or chill in some peat moss till they sprout.
Where can I buy seeds from you?
I currently do not have any seeds or grafted trees. I've been sold out and been so busy with job duties, dad duties, husband duties, etc I haven't done any grafting or seed collection.
I would like to catch up with you, I’m in Huntsville how do I contact you.

Obviously, take out the spaces. I put in spaces so a spam bot doesn't pick it up.
I put mine in the freezer! Do you think they are dead?
Probably not. Give them a go and see what happens. You have nothing to lose.
Thanks I robbed my neighbours seeds
Best of luck. Plant several because it's likely some of them are sterile.
