Other people in the comments have mentioned some of this already, but just for a quickie history lesson:
TF2 originally started with the nine characters and that was that. Then, when Valve started putting out big-scale updates, they introduced new alternative weapons for some of the characters - for example, the Heavy could swap his secondary shotgun out for a Sandvich, which you could eat for a quick heal (at the cost of standing still while chowing down). Then, even later, they introduced hats, one for each character; they were completely cosmetic, but getting them was entirely random, so having a hat at the time was seen as a bit of a status symbol.
As the years went by, more and more alternate weapons started getting created, more and more hats started getting made, and soon Valve opened up to the community itself to come up with neat weapon ideas or funny hats or other cosmetics (which started to include not just hats, but accessories and even whole outfits, like a Hawaiian shirt for Heavy and Engineer). They're not explicitly referred to as 'skins' or anything, but for all intents and purposes, TF2 was the earliest example of those systems in a big multiplayer game. And so, here we are today!

    1. Unlockable weapons with different upsides and downsides apart form the Stock weapons you already have when you boot up the game for the first time.
    2. Weapon Reskins that are weapons the work in the exact same way as other weapons, the only difference being their model.
    3. War paints/Skins That allow you to decorate your weapon by changing it's texture (neither the model or the stats of the weapon change, just the texture)
    4. Cosmetic items such as Hats, pants, shirts and all sort of goofy items to put on your character.

1:30 the gist of team fortress 2.
History: the first game was a mod built off of half life I believe. Then with its popularity valve fully acquire it and made team fortress 2 using the source film making (sfm) program or pretty much garrys mod.
Lore: so there existed two twins that have beef with one another. They hired mercs but not enough. So they ended up cloning them so now you have clone Red and clone Blue fighting each other.
Gameplay: it’s a class role shooter which overwatch based it off of. By now you know their roles from meet the team videos. The game have drops where if you play you randomly get crates that have items that can be equipped to your characters. Some cosmetic and some provides small buffs. The steam market place allow ppl to sell/trade these.

A few things to note about Spy for you guys:
    - The Spy has a set speed he can move at. He can mimic the speed of other classes he disguise's as BUT he can only match equal or slower speed characters like Heavy and if he attempts to use a Scout disguise then he will look too slow compared to a regular Scout and be easily noticeable. It's the worst of the 9 classes to pretend to be for Spies. The Medic is slightly faster then you'd think but their speed gap with the Spy is too small to be able to notice the difference in such short distances.
    - A spy can pretend to be his allies and not just his enemies. This can help you be seen as say, a Blue Pyro from a long distance away and give the enemy Red team false info that there isn't a Spy roaming in an area, it was just a normal Blue enemy Pyro. They check the area looking for the Blue Pyro they saw, while you are moving by them in stealth and blending in with the Red team.
    - Teammates can clip through each other, enemies cannot. This includes the enemy Spy. If you bump into an ally and don't faze through them then you need to kill them ASAP.
    - Speaking of bumping, when a cloaked Spy is bumped into, they are revealed in a colored-glass visual of the current disguise they are wearing if they are in a disguise at all, otherwise it will be a colored-glass Spy.
    - If you reactivate your current disguise, your character will update their armed disguise weapon to match the weapon in the equipped slot.
Example: Heavy disguise while currently holding the Minigun, swap to Knife, Heavy model still shows Minigun, pull out disguise kit, Heavy still holding Minigun, reactivate Heavy disguise, Heavy model will animate weapon swap to Fists to match Spy's Knife.
[This can actually be used in a couple different and very clever ways. When a Spy uses the Disguise Kit, they default to the primary weapon, aka Heavy's Minigun. A Heavy who isn't shooting a Minigun is strange but a Heavy who has pulled out his melee weapon he equipped, the Bear Arms is a Heavy going in to melee the enemy, not shoot them. There is nothing strange about that Heavy anymore.]
[The second trick is with the ability to falsify your currently equipped weapon with a false disguise one. While your Bear Arms Heavy is running his his 'team' he can freely swap between the option to knife a 'teammate' in the back or surprise someone with a sudden bullet from a melee pair of Bear Arms.]

9:22 Well yes but that’s all a combination of cosmetics that includes the game’s many hats and accessories. Regarding the different weapons/gear, these are different things you unlock that have their own stats and gimmicks, case in point for Spy the Conniver's Kunai, which spawns you at very low health but in return it heals you when you land a backstab.

Btw some item like the Kunai is not just a skin it's a complete different weapon that change your class for example the Kunai make your hp 75 (you die in one hit from almost anything) but when you backstab your HP become something like 210 in overheal

TF2 has multiple weapons for the different classes. every character has a pirmary weapon, a secondary weapon, a melee weapon and for engineer and spy a 4th weapon slot. the different weapons have different stats BUT the stock weapons (the first weapons you get) are in most cases the best options. the kunai that you saw at the end reduces your max HP from 125 to 70 but everytime you backstab someone you drain their health basically meaning you get temporary health up to 210 health (the 3rd most health you can have in the game). also spy's stock revolver (his primary weapon) can't headshot but the ambassador can for exhange of having less dmg and slower firing speed.

Each character in tf2 has 3 cosmetic slots, and a primary, secondary and melee weapon slot. You can get different weapons for each slot by playing and other means which are either just an alt skin or have different stats that change how the character plays, for instance the kunai the spy had lowers max health but on successful backstab you gain the amount of health they had. The cosmetics are almost impossible to get as random drops and come in different sections, so hats, outfits, pants, shirt, shoes, gloves, glasses beards, etc

Glad to see you guys are getting into TF2. Not to write you an essay in a comment here, but there are a few points you may want to know going forward:
1.) LazyPurple's "How it feels to play..." series currently covers 8/9 of the mercenaries. You may want to familiarize yourself with the basics of each character, although their names and equipment tend to be self-explanatory on what their role is. The point of these videos is to capture the essence of what it feels to play each mercenary, and not specifically analyze who they are and how they operate in game.
2.) TF2 is a classic class-based shooter from 2007. There are no character-specific abilities or spells like Valorant/Overwatch. Instead, every character has alternative gear/weapons that change up their playstyle. A big example is how Demoman, a class focused on explosive ranged weaponry, can switch out all of his equipment to become a Demoknight that is completely focused on close combat.
3.) In VALVE's own words, the Spy is "...a puzzle, wrapped in an enigma, shrouded in riddles, lovingly sprinkled with intrigue, express mailed to Mystery, Alaska, and LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU! but it is too late. You're dead. For he is the Spy - globetrotting rogue, lady killer (metaphorically) and mankiller (for real)." As you saw he has the ability to instantly kill enemies if his melee makes contact with the rear of their hitboxes, his primary revolvers have different benefits, he can disguise as any member of the enemy team or his own team, and he can go completely invisible with his various Watches.
IIRC "How it feels to play Heavy" will be next, which I think you guys will get a kick out of. How it feels to play Spy was LazyPurple's first entry into what became a series, and it is considerably more terse than latter additions.

Interestingly, in TF2 the Sniper, the Spy and the Medic are all three grouped in "Support Classes" category [*] because they create openings for their team and are most powerful when working _with_ their team instead of alone.
This design philosophy of TF2 stands in contrast to games like Overwatch 2 where "Support" category solely means "healers", while sniper role classes and an assassin class like Spy who works in the flanks and behind enemy team lines would both be placed into the "Damage" category. This has led to the false belief in many players of Overwatch (and Valorant and similar games with "hero classes") that "healers" are somehow "lesser" and require "no skill" because all they (allegedly) do is stand around and heal those are playing the "cooler" heroes.
Overwatch 1 in the early years was still similar to TF2, had 4 categories (Tanks, Attack, Defense, Support), with turret-based defense heroes like Torbjörn 1.0 (who provided ablative bonus armor to teammates) and Symmetra 1.0 (who provided teleporters and temporary shields to the team) who was placed in Support despite being a hybrid defense/support hero.
But then Blizzard doubled down on wanting to make OW an eSports centered game and catered to comp players and streamers who felt that playing "support" was "boring" because the general consensus was "audiences want to see constant attack action". Defense heroes were reworked into attack-focussed ability kits, while more and more hybrid-healers like Moira appeared who is basically a DPS masquerading as a healer.
    -------------------
    [*]
The other two class categories in TF2 are "Attack" and "Defense". Attack classes being highly mobile & good at consistent DPS. The job of Defense classes like Engineer, Heavy and Demoman is _area denial,_ which Engineer does with his sentry, the Heavy by being tanky and good at short/medium range damage, and the Demoman by placing stickybomb traps in choke points and on capture points. (The Engineer straddles the line between Defense and Support.)
At least that is how Valve envisioned the Demoman back in 2007... Demoman doign area denial and Pyro wandering the flanks and flaming everything in sight. But after Pyro received class upgrades back in 2009 or so, like reflective airblast, long-range flareguns, and special melee weapons that can destroy Spy sappers, Pyro became the best friend of the Engineer to protect Engi nests from enemy projectiles and spies, and modern Pyro should really be in Defense.
With the way modern Demoman is being played, especially in competitive TF2, he should really swap places with Pyro and be placed into Attack category. Competitive TF2 Demoman in 6v6 format deals the most damage and is the most mobile class (if the players knows how to blast-jump and the quick roll-out routes to mid) and on symmetrical 5CP or KOTH maps can reach midpoint even before the Scout.
