    Very satisfying to watch, and a fantastic result. There's no denying you've certainly developed your own distinctive style over the years - most painters don't. I'd recognize your work anywhere Dan. Many thanks 👍

    This piece reminds me of something by the Old Masters of figures in discussion...although updated in your expressive style. I love the finished piece with its rich colour and complexity of line. Bravo and thank you!

    Ah, my favorite combo-paint & charcoal. Well done, Dan, as always. First time I watched this video I was distracted so watched again. So glad I did.

      Awesome! Thank you! I do like working on these, in fact I am going to try and film one of these every week. I have no idea of the outcome so what you see is just a slightly edited version of how I work.

    So interesting to see you do something 'deliberately' :) -- I'm accustomed to watching (and being inspired by) how you incorporate randomness -- this is wonderful too!

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  Před 3 lety +1

      This one is a mixture of planning and randomness ! I sometimes like to begin with a rough drawing to fill the space and I usually decide the choice of colours before I begin, what follows is then sometimes let to intuition.

    Ooooo. I mean, how satisfying was that snap? 9:20 and on, with that charcoal. Mmmmm. Beautiful to watch and listen to.
    Your work makes me feel funny, though; perhaps it's some of the shapes. Some are very moving, and make me go all Freudian.

    This reminds me of very old renaissance compositions of the nativity. Really clever that whichever way you have the picture, it shows the same subject. Beautiful simple colour palate. Thank you

    Inspiring as always. May I ask what kind of finishing to apply on a piece with these kinds of materials? What products would you recommend? What would be a compatible and efficient finishing for both Charcoal and Acrylic?

    How do you decide what marks you will make? Do you start with an idea in mind, or do you just start and see where you go?

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  Před 3 lety +1

      I plan the colour pallet and a rough composition, but a lot of this is created by intuition.

    I like this work. How do you prevent the paper from creasing?

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  Před 3 lety +2

      Always use a heavyweight paper (200gsm) when working with water based paints, it does still warp slightly but can be flattened by placing under weights for a while.

      You need to spray with a fixative as you work or try hairspray. Use an acrylic varnish spray when finished.

      Sorry for the late response to this, but as already been said a good quality heavy weight cartridge paper (200gsm) was used for this, you could try one of the mixed media papers that are available. I used a lot of water on this one so it needs to be able to stand up to that.

    Hi Dan, great to watch and see this grow into something surprising, interesting. I was wondering if your initial charcoal drawing here was from an example or just emerging.
    Thx!

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  Před 3 lety

      This piece was improvised and it really is a good way to create ideas and get rid of those artistic blocks that you can sometimes struggle with. I will show how you can use this same technique when working on a portrait or landscape. The only planning I did for this one was the choice of colours used.

    • @idalinse8844
      @idalinse8844 Před 3 lety

      Dan Tirels Yes! That would be great if you can show the same approach, using a thema like landscape or portrait. There is a rythm or balance in your charcoal lines, that is what makes it so strong.
