  • This is a first look impressions of the new Stioneers update from 27/8/2021. The more power to you update adds the usual list of bug fixes and improvements, with some nice quality of life improvements, some new power gadgets and other things including some new storage devices that I completely forgot to have a look at. And then I break a lot of things.

    Id just like to say, i hate the sound of pipes exploding or wires cooking off... when its my station. Watching someone else break things is great. Thank you for having these kind of labs.

      I first tried to review the day the update came out but the transmitters were not working at all so I tried again the next day. I should have kept my first attempt with the stirling engine. I put in 5MPa of H2 and the result was definitely sub-optimal.

    Sterling engines irl have around a 15% energy conversion rate

    So the stirling engine may work quite well on Vulcan. You could house it in a room with a door that automatically opens at night to keep it cool, and feed the input/output from a room that's filled with daytime air. That's quite a bit of power just from the passive temperature difference between night and day. In theory you could do the same with Mars and Europa. Any planet with a temperature difference between day and night (so everything but Venus).

    You missed a chance for a cooling pun with the plants at the very end! I think with those new plants another good use for the Winterspawns will be for the Zrilean race (if anyone even still plays those? They haven't gotten very much love in these updates I feel) as a mostly power free way to keep your H2 sustained for breathing.
    One thing I'm still trying to work out is how to properly hook up the sterling engine to the gas fuel generator. Seems to me there's potential gains to be made, not to mention the sterling acting as a psuedo cooler for the waste gases...

    • @cowsareevil7514
      @cowsareevil7514  Před 2 lety +4

      I am experimenting with the winterspawns to cool the room and make O2+H2, use the gas in the combustor to make water for the plants and heat for the sterling engine, the sterling engine then heats the room for the plants and provides power. Circle of life.

    I'm working on a 8-10 sterling gennies in series which will be ideal to cool the hot gas that I generate from furnace and store in a hot insulated tank and transferring resulting cooled gas to a cool gas tank. I already have an automated furnace using hot and cold gas for regulating temperature and pressure in it so this looks like a perfect addon to that system.
    I've also noticed sterling generator works perfectly fine in Mars atmosphere. It's not as fussy about the pressure as gas generator.

    • @robertnett9793
      @robertnett9793 Před 2 lety

      That was my thought :D. Allthough our furnace-setup isn't as sophisticated (just starting out). But... why put everything in a big cooling tower - doing nothing, when you can use the temp-difference to get some backup energy out of the thing.

    So what's up with Stirling engine working gas? Going to setup it today on my Europa base, have anybody found a better mix or 15% and 8 kW is the max yield?
    Edit: apparently yes, somebody in Discord just confirmed that 15% is indeed the maximum value. Maybe they are going to reduce that limitation later? Although it's already very good I think.

    I'm pretty sure you need few hundreds kilowatts of power in the beam to actually get hurt. Well, of course that depends on how focused the beam is, just like setting something on fire with a magnifying glass. If you, for example, turn on a microwave oven with opened door(yeah, i know there is a safety switch that will try to prevent it from happening, but we are engineers, we can override it) in the room, you will hardly feel anything in most of the cases. As far as i know, the inventor of the microwave oven got inspiration when chocolate bar melted in his pocket while he was working on the military radar station.

    • @pvstiphout
      @pvstiphout Před 2 lety +1

      You're right about the last part.
      How ever the power of a kitchen microwave has been upped a lot.
      So please don't try to make you're microwave work with an open door.

    • @Brixxter
      @Brixxter Před 2 lety +1

      One of the first microwave-like devices was built to reanimate dead frozen hamsters in a laborarory. Pretty crazy story, Tom Scott made a video about it.

    • @voidseeker4394
      @voidseeker4394 Před 2 lety +1

      @@pvstiphout Well, the microwave oven is a small volume with walls that almost ideally reflect microwaves. So it formes quite dense field in the chamber with that 800 W of power microwave emits. And the room... it is a little bigger, and usually filled with microwave-absorbing stuff. So... not so dense field anymore. It will turn microprocessor devices crazy, and that's mostly it. However, i'll still try to avoid being in the room where unshielded 800 W transmitter is working. Don't want to risk getting tiny burns inside my eyes and brain, you know...

    I feel kinda bad making the working gas efficiency absolute rather than relative. Nothing worse than seeing such a low number and not being able to optimize! The power output is calculated my multiplying all the efficiencies and then removing that portion of the difference in energy between the cold side and hot-side atmosphere as power. we remove the energy from the hot-side and then the hot-side and cold side mix with the main internal atmos. The cold side and hot side atmosphere are small hidden atmospheres of 4l that you can't view with the tablet (but are the ones that are interacting with the hot input and the room)

    • @cowsareevil7514
      @cowsareevil7514  Před 2 lety

      It was a little confusing at first but once you realise that is the max it is not an issue. btw. I love the description "too much working gas will lead to sub-optimal results." LMAO Tested and accurate.

      As far as i know, organics printer, as well as fabricator, are still in the game, only things that were removed are crafting recipes for them. You can buy fabricator from a trader, by the way. Or at least few updates ago you could.
